In the realm of fictional villainy, few organizations match the malevolence of the Star Wars-renowned Galactic Empire. They excel in propagating darkness across all spectrums, from brutal oppression to relentless militarism. The space-fascist regime doesn’t stop at conventional brutality; they are driven by an insatiable desire to pioneer advanced, groundbreaking methods of evil. Project Necromancer is one of the Empire’s most enigmatic and crucial aspects of their deranged scientific pursuits, with the objective of preserving the life of the ruling entity indefinitely.

Among the challenging aspects of the Star Wars television productions is addressing creative choices made in the films that may seem puzzling to viewers. Due to significant time gaps between each trilogy, there’s ample room for numerous smaller tales within this vast galaxy. These stories can occasionally help bridge narrative gaps. However, when these shows are primarily intended to address lingering questions, they can feel unsatisfying. Fortunately, they often serve as the most reliable source for fresh and intriguing ideas within the Star Wars franchise.

What was Project Necromancer?

Project Necromancer was the secret Empire science initiative to perfect a method of cloning subjects while maintaining or transferring their midi-chlorians, or M-count. Cloning technology gave the Galactic Republic its mighty clone army, which turned out to be an intricate scheme that eventually destroyed the Republic and installed the Empire. Once Emperor Palpatine took over, the oppressive new government decommissioned the previous clone army in favor of conscripted beings from across the galaxy. The Empire didn’t abandon cloning altogether, however. Though cloning was a fairly safe and consistent science, it was unable to directly replicate a subject’s M-count. This means that a clone of a Force-sensitive being wouldn’t maintain the original organism’s connection to the Force. Project Necromancer would gradually uncover a means of creating M-count-rich clones. The eventual goal of the process would be to create clones of Emperor Palpatine, granting the Sith Lord the immortality his predecessors failed to attain.

Who ran Project Necromancer?

In the heart of Mount Tantiss on Wayland, Project Necromancer was spearheaded by Doctor Royce Hemlock, a medical genius who had fallen from grace in the Galactic Republic due to questionable experiments. The Empire seized this opportunity to employ him, providing all necessary resources for his research. However, Hemlock’s right-hand woman, Nala Se, was not entirely on board. Se was once the lead medical scientist of Kamino, creators of the Republic’s clone army. The Empire destroyed Kamino as a reprisal, but they saved Se and her assistant, a non-altered clone of Jango Fett named Omega, to leverage their combined expertise in the field of M-count transfer. This involved countless blood tests and growing new bodies to master this unique technique.

Did Project Necromancer succeed?

In essence, Project Necromancer appears to have been successful, though certain aspects are yet to be fully explained. As any Star Wars enthusiast can attest, Palpatine is the villain in The Rise of Skywalker. The choice to resurrect him involves complex matters beyond the movie’s storyline, but within the universe, the reasoning behind it remains legendary. Poe Dameron stands amidst a crowd and delivers the timeless quote, “Somehow Palpatine has returned.” Hemlock and Nala Se’s work on Project Necromancer played a crucial role in making this happen, albeit it took longer than anticipated. The cornerstone of Project Necromancer turned out to be a character named Omega, whose blood serendipitously possesses unique chemical properties that make it an ideal “transfer binder.” To execute M-count transfer without altering a clone’s genetic makeup, they needed some amount of Omega’s blood to keep everything intact. Nala Se kept this information hidden from Hemlock for months, repeatedly swapping Omega’s blood samples. Hemlock discovered the truth only after Nala Se assisted a group of clone troopers in stealing Omega. The Empire briefly re-captured her, but then lost her again. In a final act of self-sacrifice, Nala Se destroyed Project Necromancer’s data, and Hemlock perished while trying to rescue Omega. This left the Empire with no choice but to abandon the project and redirect its resources elsewhere.

Following the collapse of the Empire, remnants of it reinitiated Project Necromancer with uncertain outcomes. This revamped version of the project was spearheaded by Commandant Brendol Hux, father of First Order General Armitage Hux. Despite its infrequent appearances in the franchise, it has been mentioned in The Mandalorian during season 3. The declared ultimate aim is to reestablish the original leadership’s dominion over the Empire’s remnants.

In its first form, Project Necromancer undoubtedly fell short, yet it could have laid the groundwork for the resurrection of Palpatine. Much like other Imperial research ventures, the death toll was high, numerous subjects endured immense pain, many were reluctant participants, and the outcome was doubtful at best.
