Mewgenics has quickly become a popular game in the roguelike genre, delivering the signature dark humor and bizarre content fans expect from the creators of Isaac. A key feature is breeding: players can combine cats to create new, stronger felines with mixed stats and abilities, helping them progress further in each playthrough.
Just like in real life, giving birth isn’t always easy for cats in the game, and sometimes it results in unusual mutations. These mutations can dramatically change a cat’s appearance and give it special abilities. Most changes just affect a cat’s basic stats, but some create truly unique characters – they look different and have unexpected talents.
Long Legs
Far Above The Danger
Details:
- This unit is immune to any tile effects
Anyone familiar with Binding of Isaac: Rebirth knows Daddy Long Legs and the many items connected to his long legs. Mewgenics continues this theme with a mutation that gives cats extremely long legs, lifting them high above ground-based dangers.
This mutation makes your kitten look quite comical, particularly during combat. However, it’s also surprisingly useful in areas like the Boneyard, filled with hazards like broken glass. It lets you completely avoid ground-based attacks, which can significantly weaken or even eliminate many enemies, making it a strong ability despite its odd appearance.
Cat Limbs
Far More Than Nine Lives
Details:
- Spawn a Charmed Kitten familiar when you get downed.
Many of the mutations in the game Mewgenics are strange either in how they look or how they function, and this one manages to be both. The effect can appear on different parts of the creature, like its legs or even its entire body, and the latter can make it truly terrifying before the battle even begins.
This ability has a unique benefit: it gives players an extra unit to help when their main unit is defeated. The idea of a new unit rising from the fallen one is a strange and memorable image, arguably even stranger than the ability itself.
Wings
Who Said Cats Can’t Fly?
Details:
- +2 Speed
- Fly away when hit.
During gameplay, you’ll notice small birds wandering around. They’ll fly away if you try to hit them, but it’s worth the effort to catch them! They give you a helpful stat boost, making them a good target, even though they can be a bit tricky to catch.
Players might get a lucky upgrade that gives their unit a pair of wings, letting them instantly escape battles without moving. This also boosts their speed, allowing them to quickly move to a better position afterward – it’s a really useful ability for cats who like to be mobile.
Bone Ears
Becoming One With The Dead
Details:
- Whenever you down a unit, you have a 10% chance to reanimate that unit with 50% HP.
Once players defeat the challenges of the Boneyard and the tricky Dybbuk, they’ll receive the Necromancer collar. This collar has a cool new ability: reanimating fallen enemies. Since summoning creatures is already strong in the game, being able to bring units back to life is a huge benefit, and players will definitely want to take advantage of having extra undead helpers.
This mutation creates a cool effect: whenever you defeat an enemy, there’s a chance a weaker version will be reanimated to fight alongside you. Because this happens automatically as a result of the mutation – not because you’re actively casting a spell – it’s a really powerful ability, and a great reason to include this character in your team.

Lazy Eye
No Time To Sleep Around
Details:
- Apply -20 Initiative
- Take your turn later
Since Mewgenics is a turn-based game, players familiar with Dungeons & Dragons will likely find the core mechanics easy to grasp. The ‘initiative’ stat determines the order in which units attack – higher initiative means acting earlier, and lower means acting later – so understanding it is crucial from the beginning.
This flaw completely removes the cat’s urge to move, holding it still for much longer than necessary. It’s likely one of the worst problems in the game because the -20 penalty can cause a unit to skip multiple turns, potentially turning a winning battle into an immediate defeat.
Isaac Eye
Plenty Of Tears Left Over
Details:
- +1 DivineShield
- Your basic attack creates water tiles.
Even though it’s not a core part of the game, Isaac still appears as a unique transformation. This form adds a watery effect to your basic attacks, which fits the theme well. Surprisingly, it’s also quite helpful, as slowing enemies down is a powerful strategy in the game.
The DivineShield is a fantastic addition, allowing the cat to completely block an attack, further enhancing the mutation’s power. Interestingly, this shield seems like a nod to ‘The Lost’ from the game Isaac, who starts with a similar item and also has the iconic crying attack – now appearing in this new experience.
Backstab Head
All Back To Front
Details:
- Attacks against your face count as backstabs.
Landing backstabs is a key skill in this game and can significantly boost your damage in almost any combat situation. While especially useful for the Thief class, all players should try to use backstabs to gain an easy damage advantage in their playthroughs.
This change makes attacks from behind also hit the cat from the front, making it much more vulnerable to powerful attacks. While usually a significant drawback, there’s a surprising benefit when combined with the Frying Pan item. The Frying Pan blocks all backstab damage and allows a counter-attack, turning this normally negative effect into a potentially strong advantage in specific situations.
Gemini Head
Two Heads Are Better Than One
Details:
- Take an extra turn at the start of the battle.
Success in this game depends on taking quick and effective actions each turn. If you can’t deal enough damage fast enough, enemies will quickly overpower you. However, skilled players can use speed and special abilities to disrupt the normal turn order, allowing them to use extra abilities before their opponents even have a chance to respond.
This mutation offers a significant advantage by giving players an immediate extra turn. If used strategically, this can create a powerful opening or allow them to cast powerful spells earlier than usual. Despite its visual drawback, this mutation has the potential to become a player favorite.
Corpse Mouth
The Biggest Bodies Ever
Details:t
- +100 corpse health
In Mewgenics battles, keeping track of your teammates’ ‘corpse health’ is crucial. It determines if a knocked-down ally can be revived, even if the fight gets chaotic. As long as they aren’t hit repeatedly while down, they’ll recover with the team when the battle ends, though they will be temporarily weakened as a penalty for being knocked out.
Even with the initial health boost, the cat still seems a bit fragile, so adding another 100 hit points would make it much more durable. This small change could become a key part of a player’s strategy, letting them confidently send in a unit as a distraction, knowing it’s unlikely to be defeated before the battle ends.
Syringe Leg
Say Yes To Drugs
Details:
- Your basic attack inflicts a random debuff
- Apply +1 randomly of: Poison, Burn, Bleed, Blind, Weakness
Players of Isaac are familiar with syringes – they’re generally useful items to find, though some are more powerful than others. This particular syringe, while unfortunate for the cat, is surprisingly effective, offering a significant advantage against almost any enemy or character in the game.
Every attack applies one of five powerful negative effects, like poison or bleeding, and players will generally be pleased with whichever one triggers. The mutation also creates lots of useful combinations with other abilities, such as area-of-effect attacks and ways to make those negative effects even stronger. If you can get past the appearance, keeping this mutated cat is definitely worthwhile.
