Solo Leveling: 7 Characters Who Deserve Their Own Spin-off

The following article contains some minor spoilers for the series.

Often called ‘The Sung Jinwoo Show,’ Solo Leveling actually features a rich and violent history stretching back centuries, far beyond just one man’s journey to become stronger. While Jinwoo transforms from the world’s ‘Weakest’ into a godlike figure, his immense power sometimes overshadows other characters. The series’ deep lore, including powerful national hunters and ancient cosmic entities, sets the stage for potential spin-offs exploring a world where individuals aren’t guided by a ‘System’.

  • The world of Solo Leveling is filled with fascinating characters beyond the powerful Shadow Monarch. Many have rich histories and complex stories that could easily be explored in their own right. These aren’t just enemies to defeat; they represent the deep history, struggles, and wars that shaped the world. Here are seven characters who deserve to be more than just supporting roles – their stories deserve to be told.

Go Gun-Hee

Go Gun-Hee, known as the Lion of Korea, was an incredibly powerful figure, but his age and a mysterious illness called the Eternal Slumber were taking a toll on his health. A story focusing on his earlier life would be compelling, showing how he used his weakening strength to create the Korean Hunter Association and control even the most arrogant high-level Hunters, like Hwang Dong-Su, simply through the intimidating force of his reputation and remaining power.

This won’t be a story about fighting; it’ll be about the challenges of leading and the responsibility that comes with power. We’ll see a younger, more capable Go Gun-Hee, early in the era of the Gates, as he establishes order in a changed world. While he never got the chance to be a warrior himself, watching him grapple with immense power he can’t directly use promises to be a compelling story.

Thomas Andre

Thomas Andre, known as the Goliath, is the most powerful hunter in America and leads the renowned Scavenger Guild. As a top-level hunter connected to a powerful entity, he possesses incredible abilities called “Reinforcement” and “Capture,” making him nearly unbeatable. A show centered around Thomas would be a thrilling, character-driven story exploring the life of a man who seems to have everything, with nothing to hold him back—until he faces the true Shadow Monarch.

A spin-off series could delve into the world of Scavengers, showcasing the top US guild tackling massive dungeon raids and navigating complex corporate dealings. It would offer a fresh perspective, with Jinwoo portrayed as focused and driven, while introducing Thomas as a wildly energetic and forceful character who treats the world as his personal playground. The series would be a high-octane action spectacle, exploring Thomas’s struggles with the immense responsibility of protecting his country, all while functioning as an incredibly durable and powerful force.

Liu Zhigang

Liu Zhigang is a fascinating and popular character in Solo Leveling, widely considered one of China’s strongest hunters. Despite being the country’s only 5-star hunter and a national legend, he hasn’t had much screen time in the manhwa, but fans still love him. His incredible skill with dual swords, his decisive actions after the Jeju Island incident, and his impressive character design quickly made him a favorite. He’s already incredibly popular in the Solo Leveling: Arise game, and fans are eagerly awaiting his release and hoping to see his full potential showcased in the anime adaptation.

I’m so excited thinking about a potential sequel to Liu Zhigang! It would be amazing to see him venture into China’s Hunter system and learn all about the unique stars they use. Imagine him, as a powerful Ruler carrier, battling those colossal monsters – the fights would be absolutely legendary! This time, it’d be different; he’s not a rookie anymore. We’d get to see a seasoned veteran with a more mature perspective on the war against the Monarchs, and finally, finally get the incredible dual-blade action fans have been begging for!

Ashborn (Shadow Monarch)

Before becoming the Shadow Monarch, Ashborn was the most powerful of the Rulers, a being of pure light. His story, an expansive saga spanning the ancient war between the Rulers and Monarchs, will be explored in a prequel series. It will detail his journey from a devoted follower of the Absolute Being, to his betrayal, and eventual transformation into the Monarch of Shadows, endlessly searching the void for a suitable successor.

This story would be an epic, fantastical adventure, taking place in a world far removed from modern-day Seoul. It would show the very beginning of the Shadow Army – including the origins of Bellion and Igris – and tell the tale of a god tired of endless, destructive conflict. Ultimately, it’s the story of how the ‘System’ came to be, and the tragic life of its creator.

Woo Jin-Chul

Solo Leveling Animation Partners

Woo Jin-Chul is the most down-to-earth and honorable character in the series. As the Chief of HSS, he was one of the few hunters who truly cared about justice and often had to fix the problems caused by the more powerful S-Rank hunters. He’s one of the very few people Sung Jinwoo respects, and it’s not just because of his strength, but because of his strong morals and dedication to protecting others.

A series about Woo Jin-Chul would be a dark, gritty police drama set in the world of hunters. It would follow his daily life as someone who navigates the legal grey areas to keep even the most powerful hunters in check. The show would explore the complicated reality of his job, showing the brilliant tactics an A-Rank hunter uses to manage a world full of incredibly dangerous, S-Rank monsters.

Sung Il-Hwan

Sung Il-Hwan’s story is a tense and emotional thriller about survival. Chosen by powerful beings, he returns to Earth after being trapped for ten years, tasked with stopping a dangerous enemy called the Shadow Monarch. His ordeal involved a grueling, high-stakes fight for survival, and he ultimately discovers his mission might force him to make the devastating choice of killing his own son.

Sung Il-Hwan warns against ever visiting Korea, stating it’s not just about protecting his own son, but all children. He believes that even after death, one will find no peace there.

This new story would be a raw and challenging adventure, similar to the movie Castaway, but set against the backdrop of tears in reality. It would show the transformation of an everyday firefighter and father into a powerful warrior capable of facing formidable foes. His internal conflict – torn between his duty to powerful beings and his love for his family – makes him a deeply tragic yet inspiring character within the Solo Leveling universe, and deserves a closer look at the years that were previously unexplored.

Igris (Sian Halat)

Igris is a hugely popular character among fans of the Shadow Army. Before becoming one of Jinwoo’s most devoted knights, he was already a famous warrior. He’s first seen in the story as the Red-Blooded Commander Igris – originally named Sian Halat – guarding an empty throne. A great story could be told about his past: his life as a human knight, what he believed in, and how he came to be bound to that throne forever.

Igris possesses a quiet, compelling presence and swordsmanship on par with the best hunters. His story could be a grand medieval tale, detailing his betrayal, death, and the fall of his kingdom, as well as his eventual joining of Ashborn’s army. Even as a Shadow, his actions demonstrate a heroic nature, and fully realizing this side of him would be a fantastic gift to fans of Solo Leveling, cementing his place as one of the series’ most unforgettable characters.
