As a seasoned gamer who has journeyed through the post-apocalyptic wastelands of The Last of Us since its inception, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I think about the Factions multiplayer mode. Back then, the thrill of picking between the Fireflies and Hunters was as intense as any narrative-driven single-player experience.

Fans can hardly contain their excitement for updates about “The Last of Us Part 3,” given that it’s been more than four years since the series had a new mainline installment. Creator Neil Druckmann announced the project in February 2024, but specific aspects like its story, key characters, and launch date remain undisclosed for now.

In recent times, there’s been even greater interest in the upcoming game “The Last of Us Part 3” due to the popularity of HBO’s “The Last of Us” series. This new audience has brought renewed attention to the franchise. While it’s crucial for this new installment to carve its own path, there’s one significant aspect from the IP’s history that “The Last of Us Part 3” should definitely resurrect: the multiplayer experience introduced in the original game released in 2013. The multiplayer mode, known as Factions, was a hit in “The Last of Us“, but unfortunately, it was absent from “TLoU Part 2“. It seems fitting for “Part 3” to reintroduce this multiplayer experience and learn from its previous iteration to make it even more engaging.

Naughty Dog Could Make Up For the Heartbreak Around The Last of Us’ Factions Mode

In addition to its renowned single-player storyline, the original “The Last of Us” impressed gamers in 2013 with its intense and captivating Factions multiplayer gameplay. The title of this mode hints at its focus: players had to pick sides between either the Fireflies or Hunters factions, and subsequently participated in various player-versus-player battles. These conflicts were aimed at securing resources and ensuring survival.

In simple terms, Factions MP offered various game modes creating intense or nerve-wracking encounters. The multiplayer experience was often lauded as a believable and consistent continuation of the grim, post-apocalyptic atmosphere from the single-player story in the game world. Essentially, it’s been over a decade since fans have had a new multiplayer experience for The Last of Us, as the lack of an online mode in The Last of Us Part 2 seems like a significant missed chance now. Naughty Dog explained that the expansive nature of The Last of Us Online would have impacted the creation of future single-player games, but perhaps a balanced solution could be found in The Last of Us Part 3, offering a more compact multiplayer experience similar to traditional Factions mode.

As an ardent fan of The Last of Us series, I can’t help but feel excited about the prospect of The Last of Us Part 3 introducing multiplayer content back into the franchise. While I fondly remember the original Factions, a lesson that stands out is the controversy surrounding paid DLC weapons in its multiplayer.
