As a long-time gamer with a soft spot for Overwatch, I must confess that this year’s Halloween event has left me feeling a tad disheartened. The thrill of playing Junkenstein’s Laboratory and the anticipation of earning some cool rewards have always been a part of my October traditions. But this year, it feels like I’m getting scraps from the table.
Once more stirring up debate, a fresh controversy has been ignited over the latest update for Overwatch 2. This time, it’s their recent Halloween event that’s sparked a commotion, as players express disappointment with the event’s rewards.
The Halloween-themed event for Overwatch 2, titled ‘Halloween Terror’, commenced on October 15, concurrently marking the beginning of Season 13. This event will run until November 4, during which players can engage in the new game mode Junkstein’s Laboratory and take on its related challenges. All six challenges are centered around Junkenstein’s Laboratory, and participants must play this mode to advance through them. Successfully completing these challenges yields a special title and a significant amount of XP, helping players advance in the battle pass progression.
Overwatch 2’s New Halloween Event Hasn’t Gone Over Well
It seems that Blizzard is facing disappointment from ‘Overwatch 2’ fans due to its recent event. The main complaint revolves around the rewards; the only non-experience point prize given during Halloween Terror is a title. Even though Junkenstein Laboratory mode is well-liked, fans find the free rewards underwhelming, considering them meager. This scant reward system for an event marking the start of a new season paints a grim picture for ‘Overwatch 2’, suggesting a decrease in player motivation, as it underscores dwindling incentives.
Halloween Terror Compares Poorly To Other Live Services And Overwatch 2 Itself
It doesn’t take much inspection to see the flaws in what Halloween Terror offers. Even the notoriously stingy Apex Legends allows fans to earn a new free Halloween skin with its current event. However, critics don’t even need to go that far; Overwatch 2‘s 2023 Halloween Terror event lasted longer, offered more challenges, and had far more varied rewards. Though it too lacked any new free skins, players could earn sprays, weapon charms, voice lines, and even more. Comparing the variety of Halloween Terror 2023 to its 2024 counterpart shows a marked downturn in both quantity and quality of rewards.
Additionally, current version of Overwatch 2 can be used for comparison purposes. Coinciding with the Halloween Terror event is Overwatch 2’s crossover event with My Hero Academia, offering a variety of free challenges. While these challenge prizes might not win any awards, they do provide sprays, along with a title and weapon charm. Moreover, these cosmetic rewards come bundled with XP, making the Halloween Terror event seem less impressive. However, even the My Hero Academia rewards aren’t exceptional, suggesting that the rewards in Overwatch 2 have decreased overall.
While Halloween Terror does provide an array of appealing free cosmetics, if it fails to support those who don’t spend money, it could potentially weaken any free-to-play game. This model thrives on a substantial number of free players or low-spending users, as they help sustain the players who invest significantly more.
Halloween Terror 2024 Highlights Overwatch 2’s Uneasy Relationship With Fans
The sequel to Overwatch, namely Overwatch 2, has faced continuous controversy since it superseded the original Overwatch and erased it permanently. Despite this, the recent uproar surrounding Halloween Terror 2024 might seem minor, but it underscores the volatile nature of its fanbase. A significant number of players, particularly those who play for free, perceive this event as a signal that they are being neglected. If these free players remain dissatisfied with Overwatch 2’s core features, it could erode not only their own gaming experience but also that of the paying players.
To a certain degree, the game Overwatch 2 has made its mark in the gaming community, albeit more quietly than some of its previous controversies. However, ongoing criticism over incidents such as Halloween Terror 2024 or the unconfirmed mobile release of Overwatch 2 serves as a reminder that Blizzard treads carefully with a significant portion of their fanbase.
