Marvels Spider-Man 3 Cant Fumble When Juggling Its Web-Slingers

Marvels Spider-Man 3 Cant Fumble When Juggling Its Web-Slingers

As a gamer with countless hours spent swinging through the concrete jungle of New York City as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, I can’t help but feel a tad disappointed about the dynamic between these two web-slingers in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Their bond, which was initially forged in the crucible of shared loss and camaraderie, seems to have plateaued since Miles Morales.

If the hints and foreshadowing in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are as clear as crystal, it seems likely that Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Cindy Moon will appear together in some capacity in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. However, if the third game opens with Peter still focusing on rebuilding his grassroots version of Harry Osborn’s Emily-May Foundation, there’s a chance that Miles and Cindy could take over as the primary Spider-people. No matter what happens, Insomniac should aim to improve upon the way they handled companionship between playable characters in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Peter Parker and Miles Morales’ Relationship Has Plateaued Since Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

The foundation of the friendship between the two main characters was built on kind-hearted Peter wanting to help console grieving Miles by offering him volunteer work at FEAST as a means to cope through selfless actions. Interestingly, their bond has never been deeper or more complex than when Miles unexpectedly hit Peter, dressed as Spider-Man, in a surge of educational excitement. The depth of their relationship was further tested when Peter defended Miles at FEAST without resorting to belittling an old grump who was being unreasonable.

These consecutive encounters have not been surpassed in terms of their raw emotional depth and genuine feel, which is unfortunate since they occurred prior to Miles acquiring powers akin to Peter’s. It would have been fitting for the duo to realistically and organically develop a stronger bond as crime-fighting partners.

In Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Peter and Miles don’t have many opportunities to be together because Peter is located on the opposite side of the world. However, the initial sequence offers an exciting collaboration, with Rhino’s escape from custody serving as a thrilling backdrop and culminating in a boss fight. Additionally, Peter calls Miles from Symkaria at times, allowing them to stay connected.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Has Great Team-Ups, But Peter and Miles’ Bond is Lackluster

In the spirit of innovative game design akin to how Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart masterfully handles Ratchet and Rivet in-game, Insomniac cleverly anticipated that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would strike a balance between Peter Parker and Miles Morales. The forward-thinking decision to allow players to choose their preferred Spidey in the FNSM app was brilliant, as it seamlessly facilitates switching between them. Regrettably, this feature didn’t quite address the challenge of having Peter and Miles sharing the screen together more frequently.

Indeed, in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, there are thrilling, multi-character boss battles where the control alternates between both Spider-Men while they team up to defeat Sandman.

In this game, players can join forces with alternate Spider-Men to prevent crime in various city activities. The bond formed here is unique compared to the scripted events of the sequel, as players can show affection by hugging or acknowledging each other through classic Spider-Man cartoon gestures. Despite these interactions, it’s curious how infrequent their encounters are outside of these moments.

In normal circumstances, without masks or tights, Peter and Miles often feel a greater sense of detachment. Ideally, the latest Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 game would have provided them with ample screen time and an engaging camaraderie since they both were active Spider-Men in New York City. However, this connection wasn’t developed satisfactorily.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Separating Peter and Miles for Playability’s Sake Comes at the Cost of Their Friendship

In other words, while Peter Parker and Miles Morales do share significant moments in their storyline, their interactions often come across as business-like rather than close friendship. This could be due to the sudden introduction of Harry Osborn into the narrative in the Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series, which may have required a quick portrayal of them being childhood friends. However, this seems to leave less room for the development of Peter and Miles’ friendship concurrently.

In the storyline, Peter and Miles maintaining a noticeable distance from each other contributes effectively to the plot when Peter’s actions are controlled by the symbiote, leading to a showdown between them. However, this head-to-head encounter could have been more impactful if it had seemed as though the bond that Peter and Miles established at FEAST in the initial game remained unbroken or unshaken throughout the subsequent events.

Instead of giving the impression that Miles is merely liberating his Spider-Man mentor from an alien affliction while harboring resentment towards Peter for lacking response or compassion in their everyday interactions, it’s understandable that, with each character having separate lives and personal growth, their distance isn’t unexpected.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is primarily a single-player game. It offers missions and open-world activities related to both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, all manageable through the FNSM app. In the main campaign, only one character can be controlled at a time. To create interaction between them, Insomniac Games has designed a feature where one character can hear the other speaking over a communication device. This way, even though they aren’t playable simultaneously, they maintain some form of conversation. Apart from their occasional encounters in FEAST (Future Enhanced Advanced Spider-Tech Suit), Peter and Miles wouldn’t have much contact if not for their shared spider abilities bonding them.

In the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, it would be disappointing not to witness Miles and Cindy (Spider-Woman) having as close a relationship as they did in the last two games. If their interactions continue to be limited to situations that don’t involve city safety, it might be challenging to convince players of their potential step-sibling dynamic. Moreover, if they appear more like friendly acquaintances with a unique bond instead of companions who genuinely enjoy each other’s company, this could potentially deepen the issue.
