As someone who grew up in the 90s, I can confidently say that Tetris Forever is set to bring back a flood of nostalgia for many gamers like myself. With its inclusion of classic games such as Hatris and Super Bombliss, Digital Eclipse has truly outdone themselves in this compilation.
Back in the day, I stumbled upon this amazing game called Tetris – simple yet incredibly addictive! The idea is that different-shaped blocks drop down on the screen, and it’s up to me to arrange them horizontally and clear lines as many times as possible. It doesn’t take a genius to figure it out, making it perfect for players of all ages. In fact, its widespread appeal and straightforward fun have earned it the status of an ideal pick-up-and-play title.
Originally released on numerous platforms over the years, the classic game Tetris has seen over 220 official variations (excluding unofficial copies). Unfortunately, many of these vintage versions of Tetris are now hard to find on modern devices due to aging hardware. However, a new title called Tetris Forever, slated for release in 2024, promises to address this issue. This multi-faceted project, being developed by Digital Eclipse for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC, is both a video game compilation and an interactive documentary. The collection, which spans classic Tetris games from the 1980s and 90s, currently includes fifteen confirmed variants of Tetris, including some notable releases.
Tetris Forever is a Deep Dive into the History of the Tetris Franchise
The Original Version of Tetris is Included in Tetris Forever
Among the games included in Tetris Forever is none other than the original Tetris, not just any version mind you, but the very first release of this classic title. Interestingly, players of Tetris Forever can experience a variant of Tetris that was initially released for the Electronika 60, a series of Soviet computers where the iconic puzzle game originally made its debut. Furthermore, Digital Eclipse’s collection will offer two other versions of the initial release of Tetris; one that came out on the Famicom in 1988 and another on the Apple II in the same year. It is worth noting that the Famicom version of Tetris has a unique control scheme compared to other adaptations, making it more noteworthy.

Tetris Forever Features Hatris, Super Bombliss, and Other Tetris Spin-Offs
One of the games found in Tetris Forever is Hatris from 1990, a puzzle game similar to Tetris, both of which were created by the Russian software engineer Alexey Pajitnov. As its name implies, Hatris plays much like Tetris, but instead of tetrominoes, you play with hats. The collection in Tetris Forever includes the console versions of this game, specifically for the NES, Famicom, and Game Boy.
In the ’90s, several Tetris variations were launched, one being 1995’s Super Bombliss, also recognized as Tetris Blast in North America. This game is an extended version of the Tetris 2 + Bombliss title mode, a Japan-exclusive sequel to the original Tetris. The Bombliss mode, which innovates the classic Tetris structure by incorporating exploding block bombs, is a standout feature in several other games within the series, such as Super Bombliss DX for the Game Boy Color and Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss (and its special edition Genteiban variant) for the Super Famicom. All these mentioned titles are part of Tetris Forever.
For the first time ever, classic games like Tetris 2 combined with Bombliss, Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss, Super Tetris 2 (Japanese version), Super Bombliss (Super Famicom) and Super Bombless DX, Tetris Battle Gaiden, regular Tetris (Famicom), Hatris (Famicom), will be available outside of Japan in the collection called Tetris Forever.
Tetris Forever Comes With a Brand-New Tetris Game
Beyond just having Tetris Forever, it also comes with a few additional spin-offs like Tetris Battle Gaiden, a game emphasizing multiplayer aspects, and Super Tetris 3, a title exclusive to Japan for the Super Famicom. To make things even more enticing, Digital Eclipse’s collection will introduce a new game called Tetris Time Warp, which dynamically switches between various versions of Tetris in real-time and supports up to four-player cooperative gameplay. The developers have also hinted that there might be more Tetris games added to Tetris Forever down the line, although specifics about this are yet to be disclosed.
