As a seasoned adventurer who’s seen my fair share of twists and turns, I must admit, this Alonzo character sure knows how to keep things interesting! From the get-go, he had me hooked with that spiked drink business – always a favorite among the villains.

In the game “Metaphor: ReFantazio,” there’s a character named Alonzo (also known as Cuculus by those less familiar) who serves as a mentor in teaching you the craft of assuming the role of the Faker character type.

Prior to engaging with Alonzo, it’s essential that you fulfill a task first. To initiate this task, the main character should possess two abilities in the area of Imagination.

Following that, all that remains is locating the individual in Brilehaven and advancing through his hierarchy; however, there are still several obstacles to overcome which necessitate accumulating abilities in various virtues.

Character Overview

Alonzo belongs to a particular species and, just like others from his kind, he possesses an innate skill for persuasive speech and charisma that makes him quite eloquent in conversation.

In the beginning, Alonzo forms a bond with our hero in Martira. Later, they journey together for the first time to Kriegante Castle. There, Alonzo entrusts our protagonist with a task. Upon its completion, Alonzo joins him as an ally.

From then on, almost all encounters with Alonzo take place at night in Brilehaven, save for a single instance during the daytime. Given his role, he seems to have the highest demands regarding Royal Virtues, so let’s expedite working on those traits.

Upon reaching Martira and discovering where the colossal Sandworm resides, you may encounter the Arrogant Individual on your way. Interacting with him will lead to a subsequent event following the theft of Grius’ treasured keepsake from you.

To initiate our dialogue, kindly prepare two mental images ready, and once you’re set, you’ll be presented with a quest known as “A Dagger, a Ring, and a Rake.” This task involves journeying to the Forgotten Mausoleum in search of Malveno’s Ring.

After returning the ring to the man, he engages in conversation with the NPC who had stolen from us. Using a mix of cunning deception, he successfully retrieves Grius’ keepsake.

Cuculus expresses that he perceives the protagonist’s capabilities as a suitable contender and proposes to share his questionable expertise and abilities. In return, he requests access to certain data or information.

Alonzo presents himself, revealing that anyone who recognizes him by the name Cuculus is, in fact, a potential subject for his crafty deceit.

In simpler terms, Alonzo’s first lesson suggests that the main character should not show any compassion towards deceitful individuals, as kindness might be seen as a vulnerability. However, he doesn’t teach manipulation or deceit, but rather how to win people over genuinely, a reference perhaps to the game Persona 5.

Following our initial encounter, we establish a fresh connection with Alonzo and unveil the Master Debuffer persona known as Faker Archetype.

Nevertheless, Alonzo’s companion points out that someone from the landowner’s household was spotted prying into his home village, yet this seems unimportant to Nidia, who insists they won’t find out where he comes from.

Nevertheless, for safety reasons, he encourages the main character to pay a visit to his homeland to verify that all is well there.

As he waited for his collaborator, Alonzo opened up about his past. He confided that he was found as an infant close to the village and was subsequently taken in by a compassionate woman from the Paripus community.

He often spoke about his mother with deep love, as she was exceptionally kind and always sported a warm smile. Unfortunately, due to her kindness, she became a frequent target for swindlers who exploited her good nature repeatedly.

So, Alonzo decided to learn the craft of deceit as a way to retaliate against everyone who had betrayed his mother. Now, his chosen target is the local landlord, who has contributed to his village’s present state of poverty by abandoning it.

Instead, it wasn’t the collaborator who showed up, but rather the landowner himself, asserting that he had discovered Alonzo’s real identity. In retribution for his deceit, he decided to burn down Alonzo’s hometown.

In the heat of the moment, I and Alonzo dash toward the village, where sadly, the grifter’s mother perishes during the assault. Heartbreakingly, the townsfolk accuse him of causing the calamity.

Alonzo becomes deeply troubled with feelings of guilt and remorse, expressing the belief that by exposing vulnerability, the landowner exploited him, resulting in his mother suffering the consequences.

Alonzo, though severely downcast, consents to converse with the main character. He discloses that upon investigation, he found out that the landowner, just like him, is being controlled or influenced by another person.

Alonzo continues to carry the weight of guilt for what transpired, constantly seeking reasons for his decisions. Given the landlord’s harsh taxation that left the villagers impoverished, Alonzo felt compelled to act as a savior and protect his people.

However, he met with failure, and his mother suffered greatly as a result. Alonzo gripped a knife against his neck, haunted by the villagers’ statements implying that he was the one who should have perished instead.

The main character recalls to him that his mother begged for his life, causing him to discard the weapon while continuing to mourn.

Later on, Alonzo experiences a sudden realization. Gathering his thoughts, he understands that even though he lacks power, he still holds the leading role. He vows to exhibit some entertaining stunts during their next encounter.

Alonzo mentions that he’s been working on a fresh strategy, taking a close look at the lifestyle of the landlord and his associates.

Because the landowner is due to attend the next village inspection, Alonzo plans to confront him. He hopes that the protagonist might lend assistance during this encounter.

Alonzo plans to tap into his connections to find out when the inspection is scheduled during the afternoon, and he’ll be there waiting for the main character on that particular day.

During the afternoon, this is the sole encounter they had with Alonzo. They traveled together in a carriage, aiming to take the landowner by surprise.

I step forward and address the man, subtly implying a troubling situation regarding his child – as if she’s been taken. Yet, I swiftly shift the tone, reminiscing about the time when he was a respected figure in our community, admired by one and all in this very village.

Alonzo goes on, expressing concern about the man’s situation, explaining he was being coerced due to threats against another person – specifically, the landowner’s three daughters.

Currently, Alonzo suggests a plan aimed at permanently dismantling this extortion ring and helping the landowner seek redemption for his wrongdoings. He nods in agreement.

Later on, Alonzo discloses that he never actually had the man’s daughter, it was all an elaborate hoax—yet a deception that proved successful. His intention is to unveil the truth during his forthcoming encounter with the main character.

Alonzo extends an invitation to the main character for a unique, one-time-only show of his. However, prior to that, he proposes they spend some time celebrating together at the local tavern first.

It seems likely that the man drugged the protagonist’s drink, as the protagonist finds himself unconscious and in the town square with no memory of how he arrived there.

In the morning, the main character stirs to a shocking sight. The landowner confronts a gathering, presenting Alonzo bound, exposing his disgraceful history.

He discusses how Alonzo allegedly deceived many, involved them in slavery, and committed illegal acts for the sole purpose of amassing wealth in the form of coins.

When Alonzo is accused by the landowner of deceiving his very own town and murdering his mother, the crowd starts to pass judgment on the con artist.

The main character attempts to intervene, but their efforts go unheeded. Alonzo affirms every allegation made by the landowner and furthermore, ridicules the spectators.

As the protagonist nears the landowner, he offers his congratulations, stating that the individual being addressed was the one who successfully apprehended Alonzo.

Even now, Alonzo maintains his mischievous demeanor as he confides in the main character, revealing that he’s staking all his possessions on this very person, urging them to secure the throne not just for their own sake, but for the good of the world.

With that decision, the landowner declared Alonzo guilty of his offenses and executed him, taking his life. Quite a heavy burden, isn’t it?

In the final encounter, it’s not Alonzo who is being addressed, but rather Daturam, the landowner, who presents himself. He discloses that Alonzo suggested the act, contingent upon Daturam backing the main character’s political endorsement.

Alonzo aimed to have the main character earn hero status by catching the con artist, resulting in widespread admiration from the public.

In his farewell note to the main character, Alonzo admitted that despite his lifelong conviction of being just, he was actually self-centered and enjoyed tricking people.

In an attempt to atone for his past mistakes, Alonzo desired to perform a noble deed he had long dreamt of – shining a spotlight on the heroic achievements of a notable figure.

At last, with Alonzo’s fortune now mine, I was moved by Daturam’s advice and chose to bestow it upon our humble village. This act of kindness resonated, earning me a swell of newfound supporters.

The “A Rake’s Last Wish” request begins but it isn’t necessary to complete Alonzo’s ranks.

Thus concludes all Bond ranks with Alonzo.
