Despite the risks, some of the most talented game designers – from large studios to independent creators – have cleverly subverted player expectations to create truly exceptional games. These games aren’t just fun; they’re considered masterpieces, and the following examples demonstrate how it’s done.
It’s tough to discuss what makes these games so great without giving away key plot points, so be warned: spoilers follow.
Silent Hill 2
Constantly Hides The True Nature Of James’ Guilt
The story of Silent Hill 2 begins with a simple, yet unsettling idea for a survival horror game: James Sunderland receives a letter from his deceased wife, Mary, asking him to come to the town of Silent Hill. Throughout the game, James is presented as an ordinary person caught in extraordinary circumstances – he arrives in Silent Hill hoping to find out if Mary is still alive, but quickly finds himself fleeing from frightening creatures, most notably the iconic Pyramid Head.
The atmosphere of Silent Hill 2 shifts dramatically when it’s discovered that James actually killed his wife. The town itself, and even the character of Pyramid Head, become reflections of his guilt – Pyramid Head embodying both his need for punishment and his self-perception as someone who carries out executions. This twist, widely considered a highlight of gaming storytelling, reframes James’ journey entirely. Thankfully, the 2024 Silent Hill 2 Remake largely preserves this powerful and emotionally resonant plot.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty
Solid Snake Is Not The Real Protagonist
As a huge fan of Hideo Kojima, I’ve always admired how he can pull off the unexpected! Remember when Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty first came out? All the trailers, the demo, even the box art, made it look like we’d be playing as Solid Snake the whole time. And technically, Kojima didn’t mislead us – we do get to play as Snake… but only for the first hour! It was such a bold move, and it totally worked, even if it was a bit of a shock at first.
Most gamers are aware that after the Tanker mission in Metal Gear Solid 2, the player switches from controlling Solid Snake to Raiden. This unexpected change was shocking at the time and is now famously remembered as a major subversion of player expectations. But the surprises don’t end there; Metal Gear Solid 2 evolves into a clever, though sometimes bewildering, parody of the original Metal Gear Solid, particularly in its final sections.
Braid
Much More Than An Indie Mario Clone
Many consider Braid to be one of the greatest and most important independent games ever made, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a really enjoyable 2D platformer, clearly inspired by games like Mario, but what truly set it apart was its innovative way of controlling time, making it feel new and different when it first came out.
The story of Braid seems straightforward at first – a man named Tim attempts to rescue a princess from a knight. But players who finish the game discover a surprising twist: the princess is actually trying to escape Tim. What begins as a classic 2D platformer unexpectedly reveals a much deeper and darker meaning, heavily suggesting the game is a metaphor for the development of the atomic bomb.
Spec Ops: The Line
A Nuanced Shooter That Shattered Expectations During The Early 2010s
Around 2010, many video games focused on realistic military combat, especially online multiplayer. When Spec Ops: The Line was released in 2012, it was easy to assume it was just another similar desert-based, third-person shooter, much like Gears of War.
Despite initial criticism, players who tried Spec Ops: The Line discovered it was a surprisingly thoughtful game. It tells a shocking story with a lot to say about war, violence, and the military, offering more depth than many other games in the genre. As a result, Spec Ops is now remembered more positively than most military shooters from that era, largely due to its strong story.
Undertale
Can Be Either Very Lighthearted Or Very Dark, Depending On The Player’s Actions
When we discuss video games that surprised players, it’s crucial to consider the time they came out and how people reacted before spoilers spread everywhere online. While now everyone knows Undertale was innovative for letting players choose to spare or fight enemies – impacting the story and world – back in 2015, this was a genuinely shocking concept that many found hard to grasp.
In 2015, many independent (indie) games were turn-based role-playing games (RPGs) heavily influenced by the classic game EarthBound. When Toby Fox—known for a popular EarthBound fan modification—released Undertale, people naturally expected it to be just another similar indie RPG. But Toby Fox and his team surprised everyone with their creative ideas, and Undertale is now widely recognized as a groundbreaking and significant RPG.
NieR: Automata
Everything Changes After The First Playthrough
It’s tempting to see NieR: Automata as just another action game with flashy battles and anime-inspired visuals. However, it’s important to remember it was created by Yoko Taro, a Japanese developer known for his unique and unconventional approach to game design. What’s most surprising is that the game’s true story and world aren’t fully revealed until you’ve finished it once.
Okay, so I started playing NieR: Automata, and it totally threw me for a loop. At first, it seemed like a cool action game, but then I found out the whole story is way more messed up than I expected. Turns out, humanity actually died out thousands of years ago, and the war against the machines? It was all just to give us androids – and me as the player – something to do, a reason to exist. And that’s just the beginning! Each time you replay the game, you uncover even more secrets about the humans, the machines, and what 9S is really about. Plus, 2B actually dies and gets replaced by A2, which is… a lot. Seriously, this game is one of the strangest, most mind-bending experiences I’ve ever had, and I think everyone should play it – but be warned, you’ll need to finish the main story at least three times to get the full picture.
Doki Doki Literature Club!
The Entire Game Revolves Around Breaking Player Expectations
Most people familiar with Doki Doki Literature Club! know about its shocking plot twist. However, like Undertale, the game can still be a surprising experience for first-time players. In 2017, the visual novel market was already crowded with romance and parody games, making it seem unlikely that a new game created by a single American developer would gain much attention.
Dan Salvato, the creator of Doki Doki Literature Club!, surprised everyone when his game took a dark turn. It starts as a typical anime dating sim with cute characters, but quickly becomes a psychological horror experience after a shocking event. Players discover a character, Sayori, has died, and from there, the game actively tries to scare and unsettle them, even messing with their computer. Ultimately, this popular indie game succeeded by subverting expectations in the visual novel genre, and it definitely delivered a memorable experience.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Gustave’s Expedition Is Not Actually Real
If you didn’t play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 before the 2025 awards, it might have been hard to understand all the praise, including its Game of the Year win. While the game is visually stunning and plays incredibly well, the story is fairly simple. You play as Gustave, leading an expedition to defeat the Paintress, a character who is slowly destroying their world.
The story of Clair Obscur takes a dramatic turn when Gustave unexpectedly dies at the end of the first act, making Verso the central character. The surprises don’t end there – players soon learn that the entire game world isn’t actually real, but exists within a painting owned by the Dessendre family. This reveals that Gustave’s role wasn’t as important as it seemed, and that his sister, Maelle, is actually from the real world. These clever story elements have earned Clair Obscur widespread recognition for having one of the best narratives in video game history.
