The Strongest Characters In BioWare Games

BioWare, the studio behind beloved role-playing games, is famous for creating unforgettable characters, both good and bad. They’re known for compelling companions and villains, and their stories often feature huge conflicts against ancient, powerful evils. It’s common for BioWare’s villains to be so strong that stopping them requires the combined strength of an entire world, or even a whole galaxy.

I’ve noticed something cool playing BioWare games over the years – they love to pull the rug out from under you with their characters. It feels like a signature move for them! So many of the big players you meet turn out to be totally different than you initially think, whether it’s in Dragon Age: Inquisition, Anthem, Mass Effect, or even Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. We’re talking ancient gods hiding in plain sight, beings with cosmic power pretending to be normal, and just ridiculously powerful people keeping secrets and playing the long game. Today, I’m ranking some of the most powerful characters BioWare has ever created, based on what they’ve done and what they’re capable of.

6. Jon Irenicus (The Shattered One Or The Exile)

Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows Of Amn

Let’s begin with Jon Irenicus, a powerful and ambitious villain who serves as the main antagonist in Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn. Also known as the Shattered One or The Exile, Irenicus is an elf originally from the city of Suldanessellar and an incredibly skilled archmage—at 30th level in D&D 2nd Edition, he’s nearly as powerful as legendary figures like Elminster. Driven by a desire for immortality, Irenicus attempted a dangerous ritual, bonding his soul with the Tree of Life. However, the ritual went wrong, leaving him scarred, earless, and earning him the name “The Shattered One.”

Even after his attempt to become a god failed, Irenicus didn’t give up on his evil plans. He became obsessed with experiments involving souls, all to regain immortality and godhood by stealing divine power. Over time, he captured descendants of Bhaal, extracted pieces of their divine souls, created twisted clones, stole life force, and terrorized cities like Athkatla and Suldanessellar. Ultimately, he even infected the Tree of Life with three corrupting parasites.

Jon Irenicus, a powerful archmage in Baldur’s Gate 2, is an incredibly formidable opponent. He’s a master of advanced magic and can do things like steal and copy souls, instantly move enemies around, create his own isolated spaces, strengthen vampires, summon demons, and even briefly stop time – making him almost impossible to defeat in battle.

5. Master Li (Sun Li, The Glorious Strategist)

Jade Empire

Master Li from BioWare’s Jade Empire is a perfect example of their character design. He’s a classic ‘hidden villain’ whose elaborate plan takes decades to unfold and involves controlling the protagonist’s life. Once a famous military leader named Sun Li, known as the Glorious Strategist and brother to the Emperor and a General, he pretended to die as a traitor. He then went into hiding in the distant Two Rivers region, waiting for the right moment to achieve godhood.

Master Li has a familiar but incredibly ambitious plan: he wants to take over his brother’s throne. To do this, he’ll use the player to find the Dragon Amulet and defeat Hai. Then, he intends to steal the heart of the Water Dragon goddess, hoping to gain god-like power from her death – ending the Long Drought, but trapping her spirit in the process – and secure his rule over the Jade Empire. His actions nearly succeeded, bringing him to the brink of godhood with the ability to control life and death, command demonic armies, and enslave powerful spirits like Death’s Hand, all to enforce his everlasting reign.

Master Li, from Jade Empire, is an incredibly skilled martial artist and magic user, boasting decades of fighting experience – even without considering his potentially divine powers. But what truly sets him apart is his brilliant mind; he’s a master strategist with a nearly perfect plan for taking over the world, and he flawlessly puts it into action.

4. Darth Malak

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

Darth Malak, the primary villain in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, is considered one of BioWare’s strongest creations – a truly original and powerful Star Wars antagonist. He easily defeated many Jedi Masters, either destroying them in combat or draining their life force to empower himself. Beyond his own considerable strength, Malak’s greatest power comes from the Star Forge, a massive, ancient Rakatan factory capable of rapidly producing starships and droids. This allows him to challenge the Republic’s fleet and even obliterate planets if necessary, making him a threat to the entire galaxy.

What about Revan, Malak’s original teacher? Revan was a skilled warrior from the Mandalorian Wars, a brilliant strategist, and powerful in both the light and dark sides of the Force – someone who forged their own unique destiny. While Revan was clearly a stronger fighter than Malak, players encounter Malak at the height of his power in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. This means Malak actually had a more immediate and impactful influence on the galaxy than Revan, even though Revan’s long-term legacy ultimately proved more significant.

Okay, so Darth Malak and Revan are both super powerful, but honestly, there’s another Star Wars character BioWare made who just blows them both away. I’ll get to who it is in just a sec.

3. Harbinger (First Reaper)

Mass Effect 2 & 3

In the Mass Effect trilogy, the Reapers are the biggest danger facing the galaxy. The first Reaper to appear, Harbinger, is the most powerful and ancient of them all. These terrifying, machine-like beings from the depths of space return to the Milky Way every 50,000 years to wipe out advanced civilizations. They then transform the most intelligent species into new Reapers, continuing their cycle of destruction.

After getting a terrifying glimpse of the Reapers with Sovereign in the first Mass Effect, things got even scarier in Mass Effect 2 when we met Harbinger. Sovereign was bad, but he was just a scout. Harbinger was the one leading the invasion, getting everything ready to take over the galaxy. And its job? To turn humans into a Reaper! Seriously, this thing is unbelievably powerful – it can wipe out entire fleets with just its energy blasts. But the really creepy part is how it controls people. Harbinger can basically brainwash anyone, and it actually took over the entire Collector race (who were originally the Protheans!). Plus, it can directly control all those creepy husks and Reaper soldiers, making it a truly terrifying enemy.

Initially, the Reapers seem like unbelievably powerful and nearly invincible beings. However, that’s not entirely true, which holds back characters like Harbinger and Sovereign from being higher on this list. We discover that Reapers can be defeated – Sovereign was, and many others followed. Furthermore, the Reapers themselves aren’t always truthful. They’ve been shown to lie, and Shepard learns from the Leviathans in Mass Effect 3 that they’ve hidden important details about their own history.

2. Tenebrae (Darth Vitiate Or Immortal Emperor, Valkorion)

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Compared to Tenebrae (also known as Darth Vitiate) from Star Wars: The Old Republic, both Revan and Malak seem insignificant. Tenebrae ruled the Sith Empire for over 1,300 years, eventually becoming the Immortal Emperor Valkorion, and essentially used others as a power source—much like Malak did in the final battle of KotOR. Tenebrae achieved true immortality by draining the life force from planets, making him an incredibly powerful and ancient Sith Lord who ascended to god-like status and even survived beyond physical death. Similar to other villains created by BioWare, Tenebrae spent centuries studying, manipulating, and hiding his power until no one could challenge him.

Compared to Tenebrae’s incredible abilities – controlling life, minds, and the Force itself – his control of the Eternal Throne and a massive fleet seems insignificant. Tenebrae is infamous for rituals that steal life essence, allowing him to dominate and possess others, fracture consciousness, project his spirit, and even drain the life and Force from entire planets, leaving behind empty, lifeless worlds – much like Darth Nihilus.

Tenebrae was an incredibly powerful Sith Lord—a master of dark magic, alchemy, and manipulation—who lived for centuries. He was responsible for starting the Mandalorian Wars and, shockingly, managed to defeat and imprison Revan. Using dark alchemy, he created powerful Force-sensitive creatures and locations, and ultimately plotted a scheme to drain the life from the entire galaxy. It was an extremely ambitious, and terrifying, plan.

1. Solas (Fen’Harel Or Dread Wolf)

Dragon Age: Inquisition & The Veilguard

Solas is considered by many to be BioWare’s most compelling and powerful character. Introduced in Dragon Age: Inquisition as a knowledgeable companion with a mysterious connection to the Veil, he’s eventually revealed to be Fen’Harel, the ancient elven god known as the Dread Wolf. Throughout Inquisition, the Trespasser expansion, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Solas is a fascinatingly complex figure. He moves between being an ally, an enemy, and someone who ultimately betrays you, and his story is deeply explored over two large games, allowing players to truly understand his personality, motivations, history, and regrets.

Solas is incredibly powerful due to his nature as an ancient, immortal god of the Evanuris – a god associated with rebellion, deceit, and betrayal. His actions drastically reshaped the world of Thedas. He created the Veil, a barrier separating the physical world from the spirit world (the Fade), which fundamentally changed reality, led to the downfall of the ancient elven empire, and weakened magic overall. Solas was instrumental in the elven empire’s collapse and imprisoned the other Evanuris gods. He even indirectly caused the Blight by creating a special dagger to sever the Titans – massive, world-shaping beings – from the Fade. Beyond all this, he can create incredibly convincing illusions, manipulate dreams and spirits, open rifts and portals, and control any ancient elven artifact, like eluvian portals.

Beyond Fen’Harel, other powerful Evanuris—like Mythal, known as the All-Mother, and Elgar’nan, the All-Father—also existed in the world of Dragon Age. Though equally strong, Fen’Harel ultimately triumphed over them using his intelligence and trickery. Solas later gained power by absorbing Mythal’s essence to restore his own godhood. He first trapped Elgar’nan behind the Veil, and then, during the events of The Veilguard, defeated him by transforming into a massive Dread Wolf and destroying Lusacan, the archdemon Elgar’nan had summoned.
