As a long-time fan of UA High School and its students, I can’t help but empathize with Katsuki Bakugo’s emotional journey. The weight of responsibility he felt for All Might’s retirement was a heavy burden that he carried for quite some time. However, it was during the Final War that Bakugo had the chance to prove himself and, more importantly, to let go of his guilt.

Among numerous individuals, Bakugo Katsuki, together with others, harbors a dream of becoming heroes like All Might or surpassing his accomplishments. However, unlike other heroes, Bakugo was the sole individual perceived as potentially succeeding All Might following the broadcast of his weakened form to the public. Despite maintaining his emotions in check, after experiencing repeated setbacks, Bakugo eventually broke under the pressure of his suppressed feelings.

In the climactic battle of the series “My Hero Academia“, Bakugo valiantly rescued All Might from the clutches of All For One. Interestingly, no other hero was present or tasked with saving him at that moment. However, Bakugo’s act of bravery held a deeper meaning. Not only did it help him overcome his past reservations, but it also earned him recognition from the hero he deeply respected.

What is Bakugo’s relationship with All Might?

Bakugo Admired and Aspired to Surpass All Might When he Became a Pro Hero

Just like numerous other rising heroes, Bakugo Katsuki looks up to All Might as his role model and the epitome of a hero. Since childhood, Bakugo, along with Midoriya Izuku, would buy merchandise featuring All Might to express their reverence and appreciation for the top-ranked Pro Hero.

Because of Bakugo’s remarkable Explosion Quirk, it was clear to those around him that he would one day grow up to be a Pro Hero. Consequently, Bakugo is driven to excel in every endeavor, whether it’s schoolwork or practical tests. Bakugo admired All Might greatly as a hero; this admiration shaped the kind of hero Bakugo aspired to be.

Previously stated, Bakugo regarded All Might as the greatest hero. To him, this implied that All Might had won every fight flawlessly and never failed to save everyone; falling short of these standards would equate to failure. Despite Bakugo’s fiery demeanor, when he puts in effort, he strives for excellence in all his endeavors.

After being kidnapped by the League of Villains, Bakugo’s viewpoint towards All Might shifts. This occurs during the Forest Training Camp arc when Bakugo is abducted by the League of Villains following Tomura Shigaraki’s belief that Bakugo could be beneficial to their cause. However, they greatly underestimate the situation as Bakugo firmly refuses their offer to join them.

During this period, Midoriya and the group, along with the Pro Heroes, initiate a search and rescue mission aimed at saving Bakugo during the Hideout Raid arc. Following their confrontation with All For One and All Might, it was revealed to Japan and Bakugo about All Might’s condition. Although the rescue operation was successful, All Might’s weakened state was not something he wanted the world to witness. He aspired to retire while still maintaining his muscular form. However, due to the exposure of his fragile state to the public, All Might’s retirement led to villains capitalizing on Japan’s vulnerable hero society.

Regrettably, it seemed like fate had me in the headlines once more, as people speculated that All Might’s declining health was due to my rescue from the League of Villains and All For One. Though All Might clarified this wasn’t true to me personally, many students at UA High School and the public at large were convinced that it was my actions that led to his retirement.

During the Provisional Hero License Exam, Bakugo’s genuine feelings about a certain matter emerge during his confrontation with Midoriya at Ground Beta. In this heated exchange, Bakugo admits that he believes he is responsible for All Might’s retirement and carries self-blame. However, it is important to note that All Might was already planning to retire due to his health condition and the fact that he had passed One For All to Izuku.

Later on, All Might steps in during the altercation and tells Bakugo he isn’t at fault for his retirement. Furthermore, All Might admits that he underestimated the impact this situation would have on Bakugo. Although the matter was settled, Bakugo harbored some lingering bitterness regarding it and hadn’t fully moved past his emotions. Consequently, he still felt somewhat responsible, though not to the same degree as before.

Following the revelation of the secret shared between All Might and Midoriya, Bakugo found himself compelled to maintain discipline among them since they had been garnering interest from fellow students. Moreover, sensing an opportunity, Bakugo felt driven to help Midoriya in clandestine training of One For All, being the only one who was aware of Midoriya’s extra Quirks at that moment.

In this period, Bakugo and All Might frequently discussed Midoriya’s training advancements and Midoriya’s open acknowledgment of his battle with All For One and Shigaraki. Despite Bakugo continuing to respect All Might, he started noticing his imperfections and felt less awestruck by the former Number One Hero. Nevertheless, Bakugo continued to view All Might with great esteem and aspired to outshine him as a Pro Hero.

During the Final War’s climax, it fell upon me, Bakugo, to take down All For One and save my mentor, All Might. All Might was locked in a tough fight with All For One, but he had his mechanized suit and Stain by his side. However, things took a turn for the worse when All For One overpowered All Might, leaving him on the brink of death. With no other Pro Heroes around to intervene, it was up to me to step in and save the day.

Fortunately, at that critical juncture, Edgeshot managed to revive Bakugo, who swiftly grasped their predicament. With All For One poised to deliver the fatal strike, Bakugo intervened with a timely boost courtesy of Midoriya’s Gear Shift. Despite the overwhelming odds and the apparent impossibility for Bakugo to arrive in time, he managed to save All Might.

Behind Bakugo’s act of saving All Might lay a deeper significance. Not only did he manage to rescue the beloved hero who had inspired countless others, but by doing so, Bakugo also put to rest his feelings of being responsible for All Might’s decline. This selfless act allowed him to find redemption and forgive himself. Interestingly, Bakugo aspired to gain All Might’s recognition in the same way Deku (Midoriya) had. By saving All Might, Bakugo finally matched Deku’s achievement, and receiving acknowledgment from All Might in Chapter 405 only fueled his determination to defeat All For One even more.
