I’m a big fan of the God of War games, both the older ones and the newer titles. While I especially enjoy the storytelling and more developed character of Kratos in the Norse saga, the original games are still great. With the Norse adventures getting a boost with the new Amazon series, I’m glad the developers are also updating the classic God of War games with remakes. I’m excited to replay the original trilogy with improved graphics, and I can’t wait to see battles like the Hydra and Poseidon fights on the PlayStation 5 (or potentially even the PS6, since development is just starting). But if I could choose one franchise to get a remake before God of War, it would be LittleBigPlanet.
The original LittleBigPlanet received incredible reviews (with a stunning 95 on Metacritic) thanks to its unique gameplay where players could play, create, and share their own levels, offering almost limitless content after finishing the main story. Sadly, those player-created levels, and all content made for the original game and its two sequels, are no longer available. That’s why I’d prefer a remake of LittleBigPlanet over the older God of War games. The existing versions of LBP feel unfinished, and while that’s not the only reason, it’s a big one. The first three God of War games still play well today (especially 3, with its PS4 remaster), and God of War as a franchise is still going strong with new games planned. God of War will be fine even without remakes, but LittleBigPlanet is in danger of being forgotten, which is really disappointing.
My favorite game in the LittleBigPlanet series, LittleBigPlanet 2, received a score of 92 on Metacritic, which highlights just how highly regarded these games were when they first came out.
LittleBigPlanet’s Future is in Limbo
It’s becoming increasingly likely that Sackboy will end up like older PlayStation franchises such as Jak and Daxter and Parappa the Rapper – fading into obscurity. While a sequel to Sackboy: A Big Adventure isn’t impossible, the game didn’t sell exceptionally well and its PC port underperformed. The success of Astro Bot also means there’s already a strong platformer available, lessening the impact if Sackboy doesn’t get a follow-up. Despite enjoying Sackboy: A Big Adventure – and earning its Platinum Trophy – it simply didn’t recapture the magic of the original LittleBigPlanet.

While Sackboy’s Big Adventure is a good game, it doesn’t have the same community-created levels that made LittleBigPlanet so special. That’s why I stopped playing it after a while, unlike the original LittleBigPlanet games which I still enjoy. I know user-created content isn’t as popular as it once was – even games like inFamous used to have it – but I believe there’s still a place for a game like LittleBigPlanet. The continued success of games like Minecraft and The Sims 4, which heavily feature player creations, and the dedicated community around Media Molecule’s Dreams prove that people still love creating and sharing their own content.
Media Molecule, the team behind the original LittleBigPlanet games, is now focused on a completely new project, signaling a move away from that franchise. While it’s natural for such a talented studio to explore new ideas, the LittleBigPlanet series could really use a refresh. Since Media Molecule seems to be prioritizing new projects, maybe another developer could take over. Sumo Digital would be a good fit – they made the enjoyable LittleBigPlanet 3 and Sackboy’s Big Adventure. Tarsier Studios is another possibility; they did excellent work on the LittleBigPlanet Vita game years ago. Ultimately, I’d like to see the LittleBigPlanet series make a comeback in some form.
A LittleBigPlanet Remake Could Be The Full Package
A simple remake of the original LittleBigPlanet and its downloadable content would be great – I especially loved the Metal Gear and Marvel collaborations! – but a more ambitious approach, similar to the God of War Remake Trilogy, could be even better. This would involve remaking all three main LittleBigPlanet games and including all the creation tools in a single package. Bringing back every level feels essential, especially now that the official servers have been shut down. While fan projects like LittleBigArchive and LittleBigPlanet Union are working to preserve the game, the millions of amazing levels created by players deserve to be much easier to access.
A hypothetical LittleBigPlanet remake could feature:
- The three story modes from the numbered games.
- All the creation tools from across the three games.
- Millions of player-made levels restored in all their glory.
- New costumes based on PlayStation projects that released after LBP‘s time, like Returnal successor Saros, Marvel’s Wolverine, and more.
- Overhauled visuals as well as new tools built around 3D Audio, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback.
Image via Sony Sony’s attempt to create ongoing live-service games has faced criticism, especially after the closure of Bluepoint Games. However, a remake of LittleBigPlanet could succeed as a live-service title if approached as a broad platform. Perhaps calling it LittleBigUniverse would highlight how it combines the best elements from the entire series. Like the original games, it could offer a wide variety of costumes for a few dollars each, and a battle pass system could also be included. Many players, myself included, spent money on LittleBigPlanet costumes, even for franchises we didn’t necessarily like, because the pieces could be used to create unique designs. Considering how many players previously purchased these costumes, a remake could be a viable option for Sony as they pursue games designed for long-term revenue.
A LittleBigPlanet Remake Feels Like a Pipe Dream, But It’s a Dream I Just Can’t Let Go
Image via Sony While a remake of LittleBigPlanet would be fantastic, it seems unlikely to happen. The game’s servers were shut down very quickly after a hack, and never brought back online, meaning players lost access to their saved levels. The team responsible for the best LittleBigPlanet games hasn’t worked on the series in over ten years, and even the studio that took over hasn’t touched it for five. With the creator who championed the series now retired and a new PlayStation mascot in Astro Bot, it feels like the era of LittleBigPlanet’s creative online community is over. Despite all this, I’ll always hope for a return, as the game holds a special place in my heart from my childhood.
