Gaining experience and leveling up Pokémon in FireRed and LeafGreen can be tricky, especially for players used to more recent games where experience is shared automatically across your whole team. The goal of the original Pokémon games is to catch and train every Pokémon, and you’ll quickly realize how much work that takes when you start your adventure in the Kanto region.

Getting Started with Leveling Up in Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen
To level up quickly in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, you mainly gain experience in two ways: defeating other Pokemon (whether you encounter them in the wild or battle trainers), or using Rare Candies. Each Rare Candy instantly raises a Pokemon’s level by one, regardless of how much experience it already had.
When it comes to quickly leveling up Pokémon, using a Rare Candy is the simplest and fastest method. However, in the original games, Rare Candies are incredibly difficult to find. This scarcity is what makes them so valuable – trainers really need to collect them before taking on the toughest parts of the game, such as the Elite Four.
Another key thing about FireRed and LeafGreen is that some areas are better for leveling up your Pokémon. This could be because they’re near a Pokémon Center, have challenging wild Pokémon that give good experience, or simply have a lot of trainers you can battle to gain levels quickly.
In Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, your Pokemon can only level up so far based on how many badges you’ve earned. If they go beyond that level, they won’t always listen to you during battles.
Now, let’s discuss the best places in Kanto to quickly level up your Pokémon.
Best Places To Level Up Fast in Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen

These “Farming Spots” were selected based on how close they are to a Pokemon Center, how challenging the Pokemon are, and most importantly, how much experience you’ll earn per battle.
Just a reminder: this isn’t a tutorial. Players are still responsible for ensuring their Pokémon team stays at the correct level so the Pokémon will listen to them.
From the very beginning, in Route 2 and Viridian City, players can discover all the best places to quickly gain experience and become powerful.
Route 22 – Near Viridian City
Right outside Viridian City, players can discover their first area for catching Pokémon. It’s a small, peaceful grassy area where some of the newly introduced species can be found.
One of the best places to start finding Pokémon is on Route 22, right outside Viridian City. If you head up and to the left from the Pokémon Center, you’ll find a small grassy area where you can encounter Mankey, Spearow, and both male and female Nidoran.
This area is a great place to train a new Pokémon team. If you’ve caught a Pikachu in the Viridian Forest nearby, it’s perfect for practicing against the Spearows there. The nearby Pokémon Center makes it easy to level up to around level 12 before heading to Pewter City to challenge Brock and see how your team does.
If you travel through the mountain pass, you’ll run into your Rival again and have a rematch. These battles are scripted and usually can’t be avoided, but they’re a great way to quickly earn experience points, though they aren’t required.
Route 3 – Outside Mt. Moon
Okay, so if you’re trying to level up quickly, the route to Mt. Moon is seriously amazing. I know it sounds crazy, but I usually go from level 12 to around 15 or 16 there pretty fast. By the time I’m ready to hunt for those Helix and Dome Fossils inside Mt. Moon, my Pokémon are usually around level 15, on average. It’s a really efficient way to grind!
This area is full of trainers, ranging from the Pewter City area up to the entrance of Mt. Moon. In the grassy area where the route heads north, you’ll find Pokémon from Route 22, along with Jigglypuff and Pidgey.
Okay, so these Pokemon – Nidoran (both versions), Pidgey, Spearow, Mankey, and Jigglypuff – are pretty easy to take down, which is great. The best part is they give you a good chunk of experience points! And because the Pokemon Center is right there, it’s super convenient to heal up quickly and get right back to battling and leveling up my team.

Route 4 – Cerulean City
We’ll be holding our next training session right outside Cerulean City, an area players will recognize as the location just past the second Gym. Specifically, it’s on Route 4, below a well-known cave that won’t be accessible until after completing the main game. Being close to Cerulean City’s Pokemon Center makes it an ideal place to level up your Pokemon to around levels 16-17.
In this area, players can encounter Pokémon such as Rattata, Spearow, and Mankey. Depending on whether you’re playing FireRed or LeafGreen, you might find Ekans or Sandshrew instead.
These Pokémon shouldn’t be too difficult for a team that’s almost at the first level cap. Players, particularly those playing FireRed, should be mindful of Ekans’s Poison Sting, as it can be annoying and require an Antidote or a trip back to the Pokémon Center.
After defeating Misty at the Cerulean Gym, Pokémon trainers will earn the Cascade Badge, allowing their Pokémon to reach level 30.
Route 9 – Rock Tunnel Pokemon Center
Once you’ve obtained the Cut HM, earned the Third Gym Badge from Vermilion City, and completed the challenge on the S.S. Anne (which is also a good place to battle trainers and gain experience), your Pokémon should be around Level 22 to 24. With the Pokémon Center nearby, this next area offers a very efficient way to earn experience, so let’s explore it.
Okay, so as a trainer, I found this place super helpful! It’s a great spot to quickly grind from level 25 to 27 before tackling the Rock Tunnel. The best part is there’s a Pokemon Center right nearby, so you don’t have to waste your potions and Revives. It lets you level up and keep moving forward on your journey without constantly stopping to heal!
Like the previous area, you’ll find either Sandshrew (in LeafGreen) or Ekans (in FireRed) here. You can also explore the entrance to Rock Tunnel for some extra experience, but battling Rock-type Pokémon can be tough – unless you have Water or Grass-type Pokémon. Overall, it’s usually a less efficient way to level up.
Route 7 – Lavender Town
This area, with nearby trainers and a grassy patch close to Lavender Town’s Pokémon Center, is perfect for leveling up your Pokémon from levels 27 to 30. Once you reach level 30, you’ll be ready to take on the Celadon City Gym and unlock the next level cap of 40.
Getting ready for Erika, Koga, and Sabrina requires a lot of training, so this is a great place to build a strong team for the gyms in Celadon, Saffron, and Fuchsia cities.
This area is populated mainly by Pidgey, Meowth, and Oddish (in FireRed) or Bellsprout (in LeafGreen), as well as Growlithe (FireRed) or Vulpix (LeafGreen), depending on which game you’re playing. Because Pokémon appear frequently here, it’s a great spot to quickly train your team and reach level 35 before challenging Erika.
Trainers can find Meowth on Route 7, and it has a special move called Pay Day. This move is useful for earning money – every time you use it in battle, it gives you a small amount of PokeDollars, which you collect after the battle ends.
You can visit Celadon Casino to win chips and even get a Dratini relatively early in the game, which is a valuable addition to your team.
Route 15 – Fuschia City
After defeating Koga and hitting level 45, Route 15 is the next step in quickly leveling up your Pokémon. This extra training will help you reach level 42 and prepare for the final challenges against Sabrina, Blaine, and Giovanni.
This location is great for two main reasons: there are tons of trainers to battle, and there’s a small patch of grass near Fuchsia City. This makes it easy to quickly heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center after each battle.
On this Route, you might encounter Oddish, Gloom (in FireRed), Bellsprout, Weepinbell (in LeafGreen), Venonat, Pidgey, and Pidgeotto. If you’re really fortunate, you could even find a Ditto!
As players get close to reaching Level 50, they’ll be ready for the final stage of their journey. The quickest way to continue is by traveling from Fuscia to Cinnabar Island, but they’ll need to learn the Surf Hidden Machine (HM) first.
After taking on Blaine, I was able to really strengthen my Pokémon team! Then, it was back to Pallet Town to prepare for the final Gym challenge – Viridian City! The Gym Leader there is none other than Giovanni, and let me tell you, he’s a tough opponent!
