Simpsons: Hit and Run Studio is Making a Surprise Comeback After 12 Years

Radical Entertainment, the team that created the popular open-world game The Simpsons: Hit & Run (often compared to GTA), is now operating as New Radical Games. Released in 2003, The Simpsons: Hit & Run was highly praised for a licensed game and has become a beloved classic among fans.

Few games have copied the Grand Theft Auto style as well as The Simpsons: Hit & Run. Released shortly after Grand Theft Auto 3 became popular, Hit & Run was a hit with both critics and fans. They loved how it combined the humor of The Simpsons with the exciting gameplay of Grand Theft Auto. The game also created a remarkably detailed version of Springfield, letting fans of the show finally explore the town and its famous landmarks.

Simpsons: Hit & Run Developer Radical Entertainment Is Returning as New Radical Games

I’m so excited to hear that the team behind one of my all-time favorite games, The Simpsons: Hit & Run, is back! They’re rebranding as New Radical Games, and it looks like a really cool combination of the original Radical Entertainment and Hothead Games. Even better, one of the co-founders of the original studio, Ian Wilkinson, is now the CEO! He actually led Hothead Games for a while, so he’s got a ton of experience. And get this – Tim Bennison, a veteran from Capcom who worked with Ian and Radical for years (and even did VFX work for Marvel and Disney!), is their COO. It feels like all the right people are coming together, and I can’t wait to see what they create!

Radical Entertainment is best known for creating the Prototype games, a popular series featuring dark and compelling superheroes. Fans have long hoped for a third Prototype installment, with discussions continuing into late 2025. The gameplay in Prototype built upon ideas first explored in Radical’s earlier game, the highly praised Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Beyond superheroes, Radical also created the popular crime game Scarface: The World is Yours, which offered a different take on the movie’s story, and several Crash Bandicoot games like Crash Tag Team Racing and Crash of the Titans. Meanwhile, Hothead Games is known for its mobile games, most notably the mobile version of the well-regarded strategy game Civilization 6.

New Radical Games is available for hire to work on a variety of projects, including console and mobile games, as well as visual effects. They offer full development, plus support services like remasters, ports, and help with optimization, ongoing game support, and design improvements. With experience ranging from small mobile games to large, well-known titles, the studio is well-positioned to take on both original projects and assist with larger, more complex games as the industry continues to grow.

Radical Entertainment has a strong track record, consistently delivering well-received games based on popular licenses, like their work on Scarface and The Simpsons. They were also pioneers in the open-world superhero genre with the Prototype series, which featured a compellingly dark story and exciting powers. Now operating as New Radical Games, the studio’s return has fans eager to see whether they revisit past successes or create something entirely new.
