Back in November 2024, a friend suggested we play Phasmophobia together. I’d known about the game for a while – it’s been in development since 2020 – but it had just been released on consoles in October. We hadn’t really played anything together since we were both really into Apex Legends, so I downloaded it. Soon, a group of us – we call ourselves ‘The Boys’ – were getting together to play regularly (it’s a different group than the comic book series!).
My friends and I discovered a new game that quickly became our favorite in 2025, and I expect to be playing it a lot this year – easily in my top ten. We’ve spent weeks mastering it, and most of us are already several levels in. Our Phasmophobia sessions are always hilarious and chaotic. We started playing every night, then moved to a few times a week, and now we usually play once a week. That’s normal after putting in so many hours. With the release of Phasmophobia’s update for 6 Tanglewood Drive on March 3rd, I’m a little worried. I’ve enjoyed all the recent map updates, but this one feels particularly impactful.
Why Phasmophobia is Reworking Tanglewood
Kinetic Games, the developers of Phasmophobia, have shared some details about their plans to update the Tanglewood map. They want to improve both how it looks and how it plays, bringing it up to the standard of their newer maps. They also aim to make Tanglewood more fun to play repeatedly and ensure it fits with their long-term vision for the full game. This includes replacing temporary assets with custom-made ones. While the developers understand the reasons for the rework, they also knew some players might be disappointed.
Alongside the release date announcement for Tanglewood’s rework, Kinetic Games reiterated that:
We anticipated a lot of discussion when we announced changes to 6 Tanglewood Drive, knowing how much players love the map. Now that the rework is complete, we’re confident we’ve made a beloved map even better.
This is mainly for players like me, especially those who’ve been playing for a while. I get wanting to fix issues, but I don’t think changing Tanglewood will actually improve what makes it great. It’s not the map’s layout that’s special – it’s the time my friends and I spent learning it, mastering the game on it, and using it to warm up before every Phasmophobia session. It might still be good after changes, and I’m trying to stay open-minded, but you can’t recreate the feeling that comes from those shared experiences.
Allowing players to revisit both Old and New Tanglewood would be the simplest way to address the issue. If that’s not possible, I’d at least like to see Old Tanglewood available periodically throughout the year.

Tanglewood’s Rework Looks Fine, But It Doesn’t Look Like Tanglewood
Image via Kinetic Games Honestly, looking at the new images of New Tanglewood, I’d think they rebuilt the entire house. While the front still looks familiar, everything inside is different – the hallway, the living room feels like it’s from another time, and the kitchen’s unique layout is gone. Even the van that always startled me with its horn has been replaced! I can’t even find the nursery, which has saved me from ghosts in Phasmophobia countless times.
Image via Kinetic Games I’m not entirely convinced by the recent changes to the Tanglewood map in Phasmophobia. While I liked the updates to the other maps, these changes seem much more substantial than I anticipated. I might feel differently once the update is live, but right now, they don’t quite resonate with me.
Image via Kinetic Games Kinetic Games wanted to maintain the original feel of the house, so the layout remains largely the same except for the kitchen. They’ve updated the design to give 6 Tanglewood Drive more character, adding new details and interactive elements that players will quickly discover.
Image via Kinetic Games Kinetic Games has added a lot of new sounds to Phasmophobia for the Tanglewood map, including a catchy jingle from a dryer! They’ve also confirmed there are still great spots to trap ghosts within Tanglewood. While these audio improvements and new interactions are welcome, it’s clear that the updated Tanglewood map feels quite different from the original.
I definitely side with the fans who are worried about the big changes coming to Tanglewood. I understand the reasons behind the rework, but I’m not thrilled about it. Still, my friends and I will absolutely try it out when it’s released. We’re just not sure it will feel the same as before. We’ve been discussing the previews, and our opinions are all over the place – I’m pretty negative, while one friend is very optimistic. Most of us are somewhere in between. The fact that we have such strong feelings shows how much we love Phas and want it to be great.
Kinetic Games is asking us to have faith in their new direction for Tanglewood, and while I’m initially skeptical, I’m choosing to believe they’ll preserve what made the original Tanglewood so appealing. I know I’ll still feel nostalgic for the old version, regardless of how much I enjoy the new one. You can be sure I’ll be playing Tanglewood a lot until March 3rd.
