Beginner Mistakes To Avoid In Realm of Ink

Beginner Mistakes To Avoid In Realm of Ink

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the world of roguelikes is one that has truly captivated me. The unique blend of strategy, combat, and randomized elements make for an incredibly engaging experience that keeps me coming back for more.

Realm of Ink represents another addition to an extensive collection of roguelikes, boasting a unique spin: this game transports you to a realm inspired by Chinese culture. Reminiscent of Hades, it offers numerous commonalities favorably. The game presents various biomes, several one-of-a-kind bosses, engaging enemies, and progression through rooms that bear a striking resemblance to those in its Greek counterpart, albeit devoid of mythological deities.

This game stands out with several unique traits, including its ink-inspired artwork, unusual environment, and adorable pet animal. It’s quite accessible for beginners due to its gentle learning curve; however, new players of the Realm of Ink should bear a few points in mind as they embark on their roguelike adventure.

1 Standing Still is a Death Sentence

Those Who Wait, Don’t Stay Long

In many games with swarms of pursuing foes, staying put for any significant duration often leads to a rapid decrease in your character’s health points (HP). Even at the beginning levels, enemies are relentless and can drain your character’s vitality if you don’t quickly evade them.

It’s recommended to consistently point the joystick in a specific direction or press and hold down a direction key on the keyboard. This way, as the player continues to move, they can dodge enemy assaults effectively.

2 Ink Gems Aren’t For Show

Be Careful What You Upgrade

Adventurers can gather Ink Gems during their expeditions into the wilderness while trying to flee, and these gems provide both temporary and ongoing skills to aid them in their journey.

Gems come in different rarities: common, rare, epic, and legendary.

The majority of the gems discovered within an Ink Gem chamber are usually common, while uncommon gems appear more often than one might expect. For a chance at obtaining rarer gems, players should focus on upgrading the ones they already possess in their inventory.

As a fan, I’m always thrilled when I come across a precious gem in this game! These gems offer me two exciting choices: I can either salvage them or swap them into one of my two ink gem slots, replacing an existing power. Salvaging gems rewards me with upgrade resources that I can use to enhance the gems in my collection. However, it’s essential to note that the upgrade materials you receive from salvaging a gem of a specific rarity are significantly less than what it would cost to bring a gem up to that same rarity. This means that the first ink gem is usually not worth the investment. Instead, I find that patience and waiting for a high-quality gem pays off in the long run, helping me create my perfect build!

3 Shop Mogul

Sample It All At the Right Time

Before embarking on a boss battle, there are three locations where players can stop by: a healer (cook), a supplier offering perks, and a mysterious woman who floats around (floating lady). She upgrades the player’s ink gems. These spots materialize exclusively before a boss fight.

Instead of using all the income gained from various shops in this town, consider saving some for the impending battle. The decision to spend or save largely depends on your character’s build. If you anticipate a difficult fight, it might be smart to hold onto your wealth until you can upgrade your character effectively. Having extra funds for future challenges is generally beneficial.

4 Jack of All Trades, Master of None

Focus on One Goal

In any game run, the structure or “build” a player develops relies heavily on the whims of the Random Number Generator (RNG). While the character initially selected by the player and the talents unlocked along the way on the Talent Stele influence this build to some extent, there’s still a significant amount of unpredictability due to the random nature of roguelikes. This results in a wide range of final builds among players.

Even though it may seem like there’s no rhyme or reason, this approach isn’t always wrong. Newcomers frequently fall into the trap of dabbling in various areas without giving thought to the advantages of focusing on just a couple key factors. When faced with the option of significantly enhancing one skill or slightly improving all skills, the wiser choice is usually the former.

5 Virtuous Greed

Nothing Worth Having Is Easy To Get

Inside the ‘Realm of Ink’, there are specific chambers that players can attempt for extra prizes. These chambers, characterized by a purple motif, are more difficult to conquer compared to other rooms in the same ecosystem. They present a distinct test, ranging from tougher adversaries, survival-oriented quirks, or defend-the-tower time attack challenges.

At certain instances, it’s beneficial for players to enter these specific rooms, but there are also moments when they ought to steer clear of them entirely. It’s advisable not to venture into these rooms during challenging periods with standard rooms. Instead, they should be tackled only when the gameplay is smooth sailing without any issues. Otherwise, they could potentially ruin the entire gaming experience altogether.

6 Upgrade, Upgrade, Upgrade!

Skill + Meta Progression

There are two ways to get better at a roguelike game.

  1. Get familiar with the gameplay mechanics. This involves learning the right timings for dashing, the proper attacking combos, and learning the cues for enemy attacks to dodge them.
  2. Spend resources for meta progression. In Realm of Ink, players can use the resources they obtain inside runs to upgrade their character outside of them in the world’s hub area.

As a gamer, I’m always on the lookout for ways to boost my gameplay, whether it’s purchasing new skills at the Talent Stele, unlocking fresh skins, or pushing Momo’s damage potential to the max. There are numerous paths to enhancing my overall abilities in this game. However, since each method requires distinct resources, it’s crucial not to neglect upgrading any one aspect to maintain a well-rounded character.

From my perspective as an avid gamer, amassing resources for a major overhaul doesn’t seem to be a wise strategy. Instead, opting for gradual upgrades allows for a modest boost in combat prowess, enabling swifter resource gathering, thus facilitating a more rapid advancement.

7 Haste Makes Waste

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Overcoming patience is often the biggest challenge in playing roguelike games. Despite their fast-paced movement and multiple damage-dealing options, the fundamental principle remains consistent: avoid taking damage while inflicting it yourself. For novice players or those new to the genre, this can be quite tough, especially without a background in these types of games.

The solution is quite simple – be patient. It can be very tempting to rush into battle as soon as the new room loads and the enemies spawn, but that is a mistake. Play slowly and deliberately and learn how to dodge the attacks of surrounding enemies before attacking them. The same principle applies to bosses. Play cautiously without getting greedy for a quick kill and utilize the small windows between enemy attacks to get a few hits in. Trading hits is very bad because the boss will always deal more damage than the player, and the player needs to kill multiple bosses to win a game.

8 Never Too Old To Learn

Attack Patterns, Enemy Types, Weaknesses

A great method for enhancing your skills is dedicating some effort towards understanding the mechanics of the game better. It’s perfectly fine to make mistakes and even meet an untimely demise during play. Nevertheless, perishing without gaining any new insights is likely the reason why many players struggle to complete levels successfully.

In each environment, or biome, players ought to be aware of the kinds of foes they’ll encounter. This knowledge allows them to choose the playstyle that works best against those specific enemies. For boss fights, it’s crucial for players to learn and remember their attack patterns and move sets in order to effectively engage them. By systematically mastering one biome and boss at a time, players can ultimately conquer the game without realizing it.
