Every Major Death In Metaphor: ReFantazio

As a storyteller and game enthusiast, I must admit that each of these characters, with their tragic demises, has left an indelible mark upon me. Their lives were complex, filled with trials, tribulations, and moments of triumph, just like our own.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but admire how swiftly ReFantazio sets the stage for its gripping narrative. The opening scene of the anime unfolds with an unexpected twist: our main adversary, Louis, mercilessly slays the king in broad daylight. This chilling act sparks a series of events that shape the entire storyline, as it revolves around competing candidates vying to fill the vacant throne. The intriguing twist lies in the fact that the King isn’t truly gone; on his deathbed, he casts an immense spell, transforming himself into a menacing, moon-like orb suspended ominously above the sky, overseeing events from afar.

In a similar vein, ReFantazio could be compared to “Game of Thrones” as any power struggle may lead to a path of violence and loss. Just like in this series, there are both despicable antagonists and noble protagonists who meet their end. To evaluate them fairly, we’ll consider the circumstances surrounding their deaths, the sadness they evoke, and whether their demise was just or not. Be warned, spoilers may be present.

9 The Prince

Does A Fusion Count As A Death?

Every Major Death In Metaphor: ReFantazio

  • Location: Eldan Village

In the game Metaphor: ReFantazio, the Prince appears to perish yet remains alive in an unusual sense. The main character, Will, embarks on a quest to free the Prince from Louis’ spell. After defeating Rella, the actual caster of the spell, Will manages to break the enchantment, leading to the Prince awakening. However, just as the Prince regains consciousness, Louis’ men discover his location and fatally wound him. Although it seems that he dies, the Prince later merges with Will, who was actually the Prince’s spirit. This ambiguous state of death leaves fans in a quandary about how to react.

8 Sanctifex Forden

Robbed Of A Boss Battle

At first, Sanctifex Forden appeared to be a righteous figure within the church, but as events unfolded, it became clear that he was deceitfully influencing others to align with his agenda. This narrative twist is common in JRPGs where religious figures often turn out to be villains, so it wasn’t entirely unexpected. Flashbacks revealed the horrific acts he had committed or ordered, such as ordering the Prince’s death through a young girl named Rella. Contrary to expectations, Louis was the one who ended up defeating Sanctifex Forden in an unceremonious manner by stabbing him with a spear right to the chest, after staging his own dramatic demise.

7 Glodell

Hoisted By His Own Petard

  • Location: Charadrius

Among Louis’ reliable associates, Glodell bore an appearance of sophistication, reminiscent of the style-conscious member of Team Rocket, James, from the Pokemon series. He always had a well-dressed companion by his side and projected an intimidating demeanor. However, beneath this menacing facade, he was actually quite inept and prone to making mistakes.

This situation drove Glodell to a precarious point, compelling him to secretly monitor Will and Junah, hoping to uncover some damaging information about them. He discovered they were spies, but unfortunately, the King’s magic thwarted his attempts to attack Will. Instead, Glodell was bound by golden chains and vanished in a way that no one wishes to experience.

6 Rella

A Sister’s Love Freezes Over

  • Location: Mage Academy

In the game, Rella, who is technically Junah’s step-sister but acts more like a blood relative, appears saintly and is manipulated by the church. However, toward the end, she becomes power-hungry, leading to a climactic boss battle at an abandoned mage academy. It’s then revealed that Rella had been pretending all along – she was the one who cast the curse on the prince, but only under duress from Sanctifex Forden, who threatened her family. The curse also affected Rella, dooming her as soon as it was cast. Although she doesn’t meet a violent end, it’s heartbreaking to watch Junah weep over his sister’s frozen corpse.

5 Louis

Justice Is Finally Served

  • Location: Skybound Avatar

As the formidable adversary in this epic game, I’m the one you face in the climactic battle – three times no less! First, I stand as a recognizable Eldan warrior, then I transform into a terrifying humanoid giant for the next two encounters. These battles are tough, pushing my character, Will, to the brink of defeat. But his resilience is extraordinary; he manages to convert himself, his friends, and the Gauntlet Runner into a colossal mech! With one final, decisive slash, you can vanquish me, saving the world from my oppressive rule as promised. It’s a fitting end, but I wish I had been more remorseful for my tyranny and met a more brutal demise, like Zorba did.

4 Zorba

So Nice They Killed Him Twice

Every Major Death In Metaphor: ReFantazio
  • Location: Skybound Avatar

In the game “Metaphor: ReFantazio,” Zorba will be the initial formidable adversary players encounter. Following their confrontation, it appears that he perishes by falling from a considerable height. However, Louis covertly revives him through questionable human experimentation. When Zorba reappears, his third eye stands out even more prominently. Players won’t face him again in combat until they reach the final dungeon. It is there that Zorba will showcase his entire transformed form, which now resembles William from “Resident Evil 2” post-transformation, complete with a grotesque arm and eyeball stomach. After the battle, Zorba tumbles again, but this time his corrupted body is shown splattered on the pavement in a grisly pool of his own blood, offering a satisfying conclusion to the fight.

3 Lady Joanna

Beheaded Before God

Every Major Death In Metaphor: ReFantazio
  • Location: Port Brilehaven

In this part of the game, Lady Joanna governs the quaint town of Martira, located south of the capital. The players’ mission here involves tracking down a former knight named Heismay, rumored to have been abducting children. However, it is later revealed that Heismay is not guilty. Instead, it turns out that Lady Joanna herself has been kidnapping children, using them as sustenance for her grotesquely mutated offspring, resembling the titans from the series ‘Attack on Titan’.

Following my triumph over the child, Lady Joanna breaks free from her madness and acknowledges her wrongdoings. When she does, Sanctifex Forden metes out a grim justice, beheading her publicly. Although it’s not depicted directly, the implication is clear: she didn’t get a chance to atone for her crimes without facing death. It’s a tragedy that such a life ended so brutally.

2 Grius

Died In The Line Of Duty

Every Major Death In Metaphor: ReFantazio
  • Location: Grand Trad

In the game “Metaphor: ReFantazio”, Grius was quite unexpected as he featured prominently during the early stages. He even started with the Mage Archetype, though it was Gallica’s decision. He had a unique bond within an unconventional family, including Fabienne and Maria. Tragically, much like Glodell, Grius met an untimely end at the hands of the King’s magic, which thwarted his attempt on Louis’ life in the same manner as with Glodell. The situation worsened when Zorba resurrected his body for a mini-boss battle, making his demise even more heartbreaking. Despite Grius’ efforts ultimately proving futile, his spirit continued to live through his daughter Maria, who played a significant role in transforming the slums of Grand Trad.

1 Fidelio

A Brother’s Sacrafice

Every Major Death In Metaphor: ReFantazio
  • Location: Montario Opera House

In another turn of events, Fidelio was one of Louis’ loyal followers and the sibling of Basilio who attended to him at his every command. It appears that Fidelio had absolute faith in only Louis, having been indoctrinated into believing Louis was an honorable man. However, he discovers Louis’ true nature too late, paying a heavy price with his life. Shortly after slaying Sanctifex Forden, Louis shifts his focus to the slaughter of innocent theater-goers. Basilio attempts to intervene, but Fidelio pushes him aside and takes a massive bullet wound to the abdomen instead. Although gruesome, the scene is not as gory as other recent releases such as “Smile 2”. The outcome leaves Basilio with a thirst for revenge and he joins the fray as a newcomer.
