Takehiko Inoue’s “Vagabond” is often characterized as an epic martial arts comic that tells a fictional tale inspired by the life story of historical swordsman Shinmen Takezō, more famously known as the legendary Musashi Miyamoto. This narrative draws from Eiji Yoshikawa’s 1935 novel, “Musashi,” and has been published in Kodansha’s manga magazine for young adults, Morning, since September 1998. As of July 2014, the series spans across 37 volumes, with VIZ Media translating and publishing the comic books in English.

Since May 2015, the popular manga titled “Vagabond” has been on an extended break, yet its impressive sales figures of 82 million copies make it one of the all-time best-selling mangas. In the year 2000, it was awarded the Kodansha Manga Award for the general category and also received the Grand Prize at the sixth Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize in 2002. Additionally, the American print of the series was recognized with a nomination for the Will Eisner Award in 2003 within the Best Writer/Artist category.

VIZ Media describes volume 1 of the Definitive Edition as:

17-year-old Miyamoto Musashi, then known as Shinmen Takezō, was a raw, wild youth embarking on the path of the sword. Following the grand Battle of Sekigahara, Takezō became a fugitive from the defeated side of the conflict. Due to his violent personality, he was shunned even in his own village, and he lived as a hunted outcast. At this critical juncture in Takezō’s life, an unconventional monk and an old friend were the only ones who could guide him through his struggles.

Vagabond: Definitive Edition Volume 1 drops January 21, 2025.
