Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a great example of a game that improves the more you play it. You start with limited resources – not much money, few weapons, and basic cybernetic enhancements. But as you complete missions, you’ll gain access to better gear, allowing you to customize your playstyle and take on more challenging tasks.
Players can develop skills to hack opponents or computer systems, and gain advantages against specific enemies. It’s often smart to start missions cautiously, using stealth to avoid fights, especially when you’re less powerful. But as players progress and unlock more abilities, they’ll likely find themselves playing more directly, embracing the fast-paced shooting action within this futuristic, cyberpunk setting.
Destiny 2
Becoming THE Guardian
In Destiny 2, players create unique characters by choosing their appearance, race, and class. These choices affect how a player fights and what abilities they have. For instance, a Warlock can float while exploring and focuses on magical powers. However, all classes can use a wide variety of weapons, including pistols, rocket launchers, and swords.
While improving your skills is important, the gear you collect has the biggest impact on how well your character performs in combat. Since its release in 2017, Destiny 2 has evolved a lot, but it’s still incredibly satisfying to develop your character and become powerfully equipped through every quest, big or small. Sharing your progress with other players in the game’s social spaces is a fun bonus too.
Borderlands 4
Broadening Your Class
Before starting Borderlands 4, players select from four different characters, each with three unique skill paths. For instance, the Siren, Vex, can either create ghostly copies of herself to fight with scythes, or summon a tiger companion to attack enemies. The game shows you all available skills upfront, so you can plan how you want to develop your character’s abilities.
Players will be more motivated to improve their characters because the game clearly shows them what’s coming next. Despite being a fast-paced shooter with tons of guns, the character classes have surprisingly deep and detailed skills – making this one of the most complex systems in a Borderlands game. However, if you prefer a simpler experience, you can still enjoy the game as a straightforward shooter, with an almost endless variety of guns to discover as loot.
Resident Evil Village
Winters Is Coming
Resident Evil Village continues the story of Ethan Winters, picking up right after the events of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Though you get a gun early on, the game remains a tense and atmospheric survival horror experience. You’ll often face more enemies than you have bullets, health, or other supplies, forcing you to carefully manage what you have. By conserving resources, you can improve your weapons, create new items like ammunition, and purchase even more powerful guns.
Ethan will be well-equipped by the end of the game, but don’t get complacent! A hallmark of the Resident Evil series is the New Game+ mode, which lets you keep your weapons and items for another playthrough, and this eighth installment is no different. If you want to truly master the role of a werewolf hunter, start a new game and unleash everything you’ve got on your enemies.
BioShock 2
Popping Plasmids
While BioShock 2 doesn’t quite capture the same creepy atmosphere as the first BioShock, it improves on the action. Players can now wield a weapon in one hand and a supernatural power – called a Plasmid – in the other. These Plasmids could be enhanced, allowing for abilities like unleashing powerful lightning attacks, similar to Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars.
As players unlock better weapons and Plasmids, they gain more options for fighting enemies, making combat more dynamic. While BioShock 2 doesn’t start slowly, getting new abilities and weapons definitely enhances the fun of this underwater shooter.
Deathloop
Getting Better Through Self-Experience
Developed by Arkane Studios, Deathloop shares similarities with their Dishonored series, though it offers a bit less freedom in how you progress. You play as Colt, a man with memory loss who’s trapped on an island full of assassins. Your goal is to eliminate all your enemies to break free, but there’s a twist: it’s a time loop, so dying resets everything.
As you explore the different areas and learn about the characters, you’ll steadily improve your skills in Deathloop. You’ll unlock new abilities and weapons that help you on your current attempt and in future runs. The game is challenging and requires practice, but once you understand how it works, you’ll be able to break the loop and win.
Mullet Madjack
Cyberpunk For Andreline Junkies
Mullet Madjack is a fast-paced cyberpunk game inspired by both Cyberpunk 2077 and the vision of 90s anime. As a first-person roguelike, it challenges players to survive by managing their character’s adrenaline – letting it drop too low means instant failure. Missions are straightforward, focusing on quick, room-to-room combat against large groups of enemies.
Players earn more points – and stay in the game longer – by finding creative ways to defeat enemies, like knocking them into objects and then finishing them off with a weapon. With its unique anime-inspired and retro PlayStation 1-style graphics, Mullet Madjack stands out visually. Like many roguelike games, Mullet Madjack rewards repeated play; the more you play, the better you’ll become at recognizing enemy behaviors, understanding level layouts, and discovering the most effective combinations of temporary power-ups.
Roboquest
Robots R Us
Roboquest is a fast-paced, first-person shooter with roguelike elements, meaning levels are randomly generated each time you play. You control a powerful robot and battle other robots in a variety of levels. It’s a very violent game, but the cartoonish style, reminiscent of Ratchet & Clank, makes it appropriate for players of all ages. Plus, you can play with a friend in co-op mode!
I’m really getting into this game! When you go on a run, you can find temporary power-ups and all sorts of crazy weapons – everything from laser guns to things that freeze enemies. Plus, you earn a currency you can use to upgrade stuff back at camp. It’s a classic roguelike loop: the more you play and improve, the stronger you get for the next run, which is awesome!
