Weapon Types That Make It Easier To Kill Enemies In The Field In Metaphor: ReFantazio

As a seasoned adventurer with years of RPG escapades under my belt, I must say that the weapons system in Metaphor: ReFantazio has truly captured my imagination! Amongst all the unique arsenal at our disposal, none have tickled my fancy quite like the Crossbow, oh boy!

In Metaphor: ReFantazio, the combat system blends elements of traditional turn-based RPGs and action games, much like Atlus’ popular series such as Persona. Similar to these games, players engage in turn-based scenarios with a team of four characters. They can wield weapons and cast spells, which correspond to their Archetypes – essentially the game’s classes. If players advance far enough in Metaphor: ReFantazio, they have the ability to defeat enemies on the battlefield directly.

Some weapons make the dispatching of foes easier than others. The classic RPG sword, for example, does not work that well outside of the turn-based battles. So, let’s look at the weird and powerful weapons players should equip while exploring dungeons instead marked by their overall effectiveness. The specific weapon doesn’t matter as every weapon type behaves the same whether it is store-bought or the ultimate achievement in craftsmanship. There will be some spoilers due to Archetype unlocks and dungeons shown.

7 Spear

Getting That Tactical Feedback

  • Archetype: Knight (Hulkenberg)

Spears are often one of the better weapons in RPGs. They give players the safety of distance but they’re not too far away so that they can feel that visceral connection to an opponent. In Metaphor: ReFantazio, they are pretty fast for larger weapons which is interesting considering greatswords are some of the slowest weapons and they look about the same weight and length. Players can equip a spear and go to town jabbing at enemies one-on-one or in groups, doing some wild acrobatics in combos. These combos may not look as fluid as other action games like Devil May Cry, but players should enjoy how spears feel in Metaphor: ReFantazio regardless. Spears are the weapon of choice for the Knight Archetype which is an automatic get through Hulkenberg.

6 Gloves

Float Like A Butterfly, Sting Like An Archetype

  • Archetype: Brawler (Catherina)

In a game, monks and martial artists are delightful characters to manage due to their speed. Recently, gamers had a blast playing Tifa from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, who relied on her fists in close combat. More recently, the arrival of Metaphor: ReFantazio introduces glove-based weapons for players to use, especially when they choose the Brawler Archetype.

Players can access this feature by utilizing one of the various optional companions provided by ReFantazio, named Catherina. In a metaphorical sense, these companions act as keys. When it comes to enemies, players must get quite near them to deploy their abilities, but due to their swift and powerful strikes, players can easily dodge potential danger if required.

5 Staffs

An Aura Of Protection

  • Archetype: Mage (Gallica)

In fantasy role-playing games (RPGs), staffs are commonly the weapon of choice for magical characters, or mages. The Mage Archetype in the game Metaphor: ReFantazio follows this trend. Traditionally, staffs don’t deal a lot of direct damage but rather amplify magical abilities. However, this may not be entirely accurate during turn-based combat scenarios, but staffs prove to be effective during action segments. Compared to melee weapons, staffs have a greater reach due to the energy rings that emanate when players move them around. This feature is particularly useful in situations where multiple enemies surround the player and quick disposal of these foes is required.

4 Crosier

Summon A Blackhole To Destroy Your Enemies

  • Archetype: Summoner (Eupha)

As a gamer, I’d say the Crosier is similar to a staff from the Mage-like Archetype, but it’s unique to the Summoner. To wield this Archetype, you’ll need to get Eupha into your party first. In combat, the Crosier moves slower than a regular staff and doesn’t flash with energy like its counterpart. But when used in combination, the final strike unleashes a massive black orb that not only damages nearby enemies but also darkens the surroundings, giving off an eerie feeling as if a mini black hole has been created! Isn’t that an exciting opportunity to play around with in an RPG?

3 Abacus

Surrounding Yourself With The Power Of Math

  • Archetype: Merchant (Brigitta)

In the game Metaphor: ReFantazio, the Abacus is one of the unique weapons for the Merchant Archetype. It’s not alone in using mathematical tools as deadly instruments; there was also the Calculator Job in Final Fantasy Tactics. Moving beyond those games, the Abacus in Metaphor: ReFantazio can be likened to a discus in open combat situations. Players will spin it around them, effectively dispersing large groups of enemies. The final combo expands this attack range, allowing players to strike from a relatively safe mid-distance.

2 Daggers

A Sharp Projectile

  • Archetype: Faker (Alonzo)

Daggers are exceptional, functioning differently than weapons in most RPGs. Commonly, they’re a melee weapon, much like Zidane wields them in Final Fantasy 9. In the game ReFantazio, these daggers fall under the Faker Archetype, allowing players to hurl an endless number at enemies on the battlefield. If enemies get too close, players resort to kneeing them, which appears peculiar given the situation.

Apart from some issues with the animation, the reach on these daggers isn’t particularly impressive, and it seems that other options might be more effective given the top choice. However, considering their scarcity as ranged weapons, daggers excel at taking down foes in dungeon environments.

1 Crossbows

So I Started Blasting

  • Archetype: Gunner (Neuras)

In this game I’m playing, there’s a Gunner character type that transforms in various ways after chatting with Neuras. Each transformation makes their cannon appear larger, following the classic, over-the-top style you see in anime. Sadly, we players can’t physically wield these cannons; instead, we’re given crossbows as our weapons of choice. Although they might not be flashy in turn-based fights, they truly shine during action sequences. Instead of arrows, we blast lasers! The first time you unleash them, you might drop your jaw to the floor. It’s funny, sure, but it’s also incredibly powerful and the range is outstanding. I wish I could equip crossbows as an option for every character type when exploring dungeons though.
