As a seasoned analyst with years of experience observing the intricate dance between cybercriminals and law enforcement, I find myself both intrigued and cautiously optimistic about this recent development. Eric Council Jr., allegedly involved in the high-profile hack of the SEC’s Twitter account, is reportedly considering a plea deal.
The legal team responsible for federal cases is considering extending a plea bargain to Eric Council Jr., who stands accused of playing a role in a well-known cyber attack on the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s main Twitter account. Originally known as X, this account was hacked.
This event involved social engineering, as a bogus announcement about Bitcoin ETF approval was made, momentarily swaying the cryptocurrency market. Council, who is facing similar allegations but has pleaded not guilty, also has charges related to aggravated identity theft conspiracy and fraud involving access devices.
US SEC Twitter Hack Suspect Set To Receive Plea Deal
In the context of a court hearing held in Washington, I, as an analyst, can share that Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Rosenberg disclosed the intention of the prosecution to persist with the proposal of a plea agreement towards Council.
Rosenberg stated to U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson that they plan to propose a request for leniency. He added, “I’m unsure if it will be granted or not.” If the Council accepts this deal, their cooperation could potentially aid federal authorities in identifying and prosecuting other individuals suspected of being involved in the hacking plot.
The defense team claims that the accused, Council, did not act alone during the attack on the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). They suggest that he received instructions from other individuals who played significant roles in planning and executing the cyberattack. These unnamed accomplices are said to have deliberately targeted a SEC employee and collaborated with Council to employ a method called SIM swapping, which aimed to breach the security barriers protecting the SEC’s social media account.
