After a long wait, Marvel’s Wolverine is officially coming to the PS5 on September 15, 2026. It looks like development is gaining momentum, and the latest trailer suggests this game from Insomniac Games will be a darker and more violent experience than their popular Marvel’s Spider-Man game.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how Insomniac handles the darker, more violent story in Marvel’s Wolverine. One of my main issues with the Marvel’s Spider-Man games has been that the writing sometimes feels too safe. I understand Spider-Man is usually geared towards a younger audience, but I’m excited about this change. Despite the different tone, Marvel’s Wolverine is confirmed to exist in the same universe as the Spider-Man games, essentially creating a shared Insomniac gaming world. While Wolverine probably won’t have direct story connections to Spider-Man, there could be shared gameplay elements. Because of this, it’s a good idea to play the Marvel’s Spider-Man games – especially if you haven’t already!

Insomniac’s initial Spider-Man game is surprisingly their most extensive, clocking in at around 17 hours. The main story is well-paced and doesn’t feel drawn out. Though the side missions aren’t revolutionary, the incredibly fun movement and fighting keep everything engaging, even if it’s just a solid, enjoyable experience.

Play Marvel’s Spider-Man If…
If you’re looking for a great story, the original Marvel’s Spider-Man game stands out. It has a much stronger narrative than the other two Insomniac Spider-Man games, with believable stakes and consequences that really fit the character. The game perfectly captures the central struggle of Spider-Man: balancing a normal life with being a superhero, especially since Peter Parker is just a regular guy, not a wealthy genius or a god.
Even today, Marvel’s Spider-Man is a fun game to play, though newer games in the series have added even more features and options. Because of this, and because of the story itself, Marvel’s Spider-Man is the perfect first game for anyone just getting into the series.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Many people criticize Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and it’s easy to see why. It’s noticeably shorter than the first game, and uses the same city map, though with some attractive winter effects. The story isn’t as strong as in the other games, partly because it feels a bit separate from the overall series, and partly because it’s so brief. Despite these issues, it’s a fantastic way to meet this version of Miles Morales, offering improved and more fluid movement and fighting thanks to his special powers.

If you’re looking for a quick and enjoyable experience, this game doesn’t surpass Spider-Man 2 in terms of gameplay, but it offers a good amount of content for your money. Some people feel the $50 price tag is a bit high for what’s essentially a shorter sequel, and that’s understandable, but it’s frequently available at a discount.
Miles Morales, like all the Marvel’s Spider-Man games, is available for “free” via PS Plus Premium.

If you’re looking for the most polished and fun gameplay in the Spider-Man series, Spider-Man 2 delivers. While the story isn’t perfect, the moment-to-moment experience is a huge step up from previous games. You get to play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, each with their own abilities and things to do. New features like the Web Wings and improved combat mechanics make the game more engaging and offer a lot of variety.
Pressed for Time? Just Play Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Even though Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is shorter and, in my view, not as well-written as the first Spider-Man game, it’s still the best choice to play before Marvel’s Wolverine. It has the most polished gameplay of the series and will quickly familiarize you with the world Insomniac Games has created – including details that might show up in Wolverine. As Insomniac’s newest game, Spider-Man 2 also gives you the clearest idea of their current style, which will likely be similar to what you’ll experience in Wolverine.
