Battlefield Can and Should Dip Its Toes Into One Popular Call of Duty Mode

As a seasoned gamer with decades of battlefield under my belt, I can confidently say that the multiplayer experience in Battlefield has always been the pièce de résistance for me. The grand, large-scale warfare and balanced game modes have consistently delivered an unparalleled gaming experience. But let’s face it, even a battle-hardened soldier like myself yearns for something new every now and then.

Since its debut in 2002, multiplayer gameplay has been the core aspect of the Battlefield series. Although the single-player campaigns provided entertaining moments and offline skirmishes against artificial intelligence were a useful alternative for those without internet access in the past, it’s the thrilling, high-participation online multiplayer battles that have consistently offered the most rewarding Battlefield experience, and this focus is unlikely to shift in the near future.

The key to success for any multiplayer game is having great game modes, and thankfully, Battlefield has established plenty of its own staples over the years. Conquest, Rush, and even newer additions like Operations have all delivered the perfect balance of close-quarters intensity and grand, large-scale warfare that separates Battlefield from its contemporaries. But there’s always room for more, and the next Battlefield might want to look to a recent Call of Duty game mode for inspiration.

Battlefield Should Borrow Call of Duty’s Gunfight Mode

Call of Duty’s Gunfight Mode Explained

Initially launched in “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” back in 2019, Gunfight has swiftly risen to become one of the most favored game modes within the series’ recent timeline. In its commonly played form, Gunfight is a high-speed, 2 versus 2 deathmatch where players aim to wipe out the opposing team in only 40 seconds. The map dimensions are significantly reduced compared to standard sizes, and all players receive the same equipment loadout, which rotates at regular intervals throughout several rounds.

The fast-paced and team-oriented gameplay of Gunfight was a refreshing departure for many when it debuted in 2019, offering a change from the traditional objective-based 6v6 modes found in Call of Duty games. This unique experience was further expanded upon in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, where it gained even more fans. The popularity of Gunfight grew so significantly that its absence in Modern Warfare 2’s 2022 release sparked a wave of fan complaints, ultimately leading to its reintroduction in the Season 3 update.

Over time, there have been numerous adaptations of the game known as Gunfight. These adjustments span from minor modifications such as 1v1 or 3v3 matchups, to substantial shifts like Gunfight: OSP (On-Site Procurement), where players initially fight unarmed and gather weapons scattered on the ground.

How Battlefield Can Adapt and Expand Upon Call of Duty’s Gunfight Mode

The Battlefield series has historically focused on strategic team combat, so incorporating a game mode similar to Gunfight would align well with the series’ style. While Call of Duty has tried various formats for Gunfight, including 1 versus 1, 3 versus 3, and even 6 versus 6, their 2 versus 2 version is considered most engaging and popular. The next Battlefield game could establish a unique niche by offering a polished 4 versus 4 deathmatch experience reminiscent of Gunfight.

In this 4v4 setup, you can expect the same thrilling, tight combat encounters that the game is recognized for, but with an added layer of strategic depth. This might lead to a mode that offers a unique mix between the fast-paced action of Call of Duty and the tactical finesse required in Rainbow Six Siege.

Designing maps for a hypothetical Battlefield Gunfight mode can be quite straightforward. Although Battlefield is predominantly recognized for its expansive, multiplayer-intensive maps, these battlefields usually incorporate one or two smaller focal points, like the Gas Station POI within Caspian Border. These smaller focal points could be effortlessly extracted and utilized for the Gunfight mode.
