As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia when reminiscing about the good old days of Mortal Kombat and Injustice. While MK1 has left some fans wanting more, it’s clear that NetherRealm needs to shake things up for its next big release – and that’s where Injustice 3 comes in.
Even though Mortal Kombat 1 started off powerfully, it has been garnering a rather contentious response over the past year. Missing multiplayer modes, questionable microtransactions, and excessive use of the new Kameo system have left some fans dissatisfied with Mortal Kombat 1, and the Khaos Reigns expansion failed to improve the situation. Now could be an opportune moment for NetherRealm to revisit its popular Injustice fighting game series.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but ponder about the potential return of the Injustice series, which could undoubtedly be the blockbuster hit NetherRealm needs after Mortal Kombat 1. However, if Injustice 3 were to materialize, it wouldn’t do so by resting on past accomplishments. Instead, it would need to build upon and enhance what has come before, introducing fresh mechanics and elements.
Injustice 3 Should Incorporate Less Violent Finishers
Mortal Kombat’s Fatalities Are Just The Tip of the Iceberg
Since its debut in 1992, the Mortal Kombat franchise has been particularly known for one aspect: the dramatic finish moves known as Fatalities. These moves serve as a gruesome way to showcase the player’s victory over their opponent, but they offer much more than just a shock value. Over time, Fatalities have evolved to become increasingly violent, cinematic, and rewarding. They are not just a cheap thrill; rather, they play a crucial role in defining each fighter’s unique identity. These deadly moves often serve as the ultimate showcase of a character’s combat style and personality.
In addition to Fatalities, Mortal Kombat also offers unique finisher types such as Babalities, Friendships, and Animalities. The game introduced Babalities in 1993’s Mortal Kombat 2, where players could convert their opponents into crawling infants instead of delivering a brutal finisher. Friendships were another alternative, offering a light-hearted act of kindness rather than a violent end. Animalities debuted in Mortal Kombat 3 and have now returned with the expansion Khaos Reigns in Mortal Kombat 1, allowing players to transform into an animal before defeating their opponent. While these finishers may not be as famous as the devastating Fatality, they certainly help define each character’s individuality.
How Injustice 3 Could Approach Finishers
In comparison to Mortal Kombat, the Injustice series has an edge because it features characters like Batman, Superman, and the Joker who are widely recognized. This means NetherRealm doesn’t have to work as hard to establish these characters’ identities through gameplay. However, it would be intriguing if a potential Injustice 3 incorporated a finisher system similar to Mortal Kombat, enhancing the authentic comic book personas of these heroes even more.
2008’s “Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe” introduced a “Heroic Brutality” feature, enabling its DC characters to terminate opponents in a more moderate, bloodless fashion. These finishing moves were met with criticism for being overly generic and unusually mild, as most heroes typically executed a move that could be integrated into a standard combo sequence. However, the underlying idea of the “Heroic Brutality” system holds potential with some careful adjustments.
Injustice 3 could provide fulfilling T-rated finishers by putting a strong emphasis on each character’s distinctive personality, fighting style, and comic book background. For example, characters who are more violent, like the Joker, might still perform brutal finishes reminiscent of Fatality, but the camera could be skillfully utilized to prevent an M-rating. On the other hand, for heroic figures such as Superman, the finisher’s focus wouldn’t necessarily be on the final blow itself, but rather on something that occurs during the fight’s climax, such as taking a moment to save a cat trapped in a tree towards the end of the battle.
