As a seasoned gamer and horror enthusiast with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment regarding John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando. This game has been a highly anticipated addition to my horror shooter collection ever since its announcement in June 2023. The combination of Carpenter’s masterful storytelling and Saber Interactive’s proven track record with the Dead Island series had me salivating at the prospect of this unique collaboration.
Enthusiasts of games and horror enthusiasts have eagerly anticipated John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando since its announcement in June 2023. Since the publication of comic books related to the game, there has been no update about the upcoming title, leaving some worried that John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando might miss its prime opportunity for release due to delay.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but excitedly share that the thrilling zombie first-person shooter I’m eagerly anticipating is a creation of Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment. Yet, it’s the darkly imaginative mind of horror maestro John Carpenter that truly brings this game to life. Known for his chilling films like The Thing, Halloween, Escape From New York, They Live, and countless others, this is Carpenter’s inaugural foray into the zombie genre with the game titled Toxic Commando. Even though he’s previously dabbled in horror staples such as aliens, ghosts, and vampires, this marks his first exploration into the undead realm.
What Is Known About Toxic Commando
In conjunction with the reveal of Toxic Commando, players have a general understanding of the game’s concept. It is set in a not-too-distant future, where an ill-fated attempt to tap into the Earth’s core unleashes the horrific Sludge God. This monstrosity initiates a planetary transformation, transforming soil into filth and turning life into zombies. The chief scientist responsible for the experiment forms a squad of commandos with the mission to eliminate the Sludge God and its twisted associates.
In the video games Toxic Commando, players can team up with friends to battle zombies, and it’s available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. This year in March, Dark Horse published a comic book series titled John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando: Rise of the Sludge God, which serves as promotional material for the upcoming first-person shooter. However, these prequel comics have not yet been confirmed as part of the game’s official storyline.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement about the rumors surrounding Carpenter’s new project, Toxic Commando. With very little concrete information available, it’s left many of us guessing, and one intriguing theory is that it might be a nautical adventure. Although it holds immense potential, it appears that a Halloween release date might not be on the cards, which would have been absolutely fitting for the spooky season.
Toxic Commando’s Release Date Has Yet to Emerge
In 2024, it’s planned that “Toxic Commando” will hit the screens. With only two months remaining before the scheduled release date, Saber Interactive, Focus Entertainment, and John Carpenter find themselves racing against time. Regrettably, due to the limited time left, “Toxic Commando” has now missed its ideal window for launch.
In simpler terms, having numerous horror games launched in October resembles the principle of Occam’s Razor – the simplest solution is most likely correct. Focus Entertainment’s official page has hinted at a closed beta for their game during two weekends in October, but without disclosing exact dates publicly. This suggests that an October release date for the game seems improbable, especially with Halloween fast approaching.
It would have been ideal for the launch of “Toxic Commando” to coincide with Halloween. Given that the creator of the “Halloween” franchise is a twisted genius, releasing it on Halloween could also serve as a nod to John Carpenter’s work. However, given that no official announcements regarding the release date have been made yet, fans should primarily focus on whether the launch will be delayed.
How Toxic Commando Can Still Make Use of the Halloween Season
At the very minimum, Halloween presents an optimal opportunity for unveiling fresh test footage or a new trailer for “John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando”. As of now, no official video content related to the game has been shared since the initial reveal trailer in June 2023. Given that the game is undergoing closed beta testing at the moment, Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment possess a wealth of captivating visuals they could share with enthusiastic fans.
It’s plausible that the same beta testing delaying the release of a new trailer for “John Carpenter’s Toxic Commandos” is also preventing Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment from announcing a new release date. Since there are only two months left in 2024, it appears that the game may miss its 2024 window. With no fresh updates forthcoming from these parties, fans may have to wait until 2025 before they can get their hands on “John Carpenter’s Toxic Commandos.
