As a seasoned gamer with decades of Pokémon adventures under my belt, I must say that the recent revelations from Generation 3 have been nothing short of mind-blowing. It’s like uncovering hidden treasure, each new leak revealing a piece of the intricate puzzle that is Pokémon development.
Among the leaks regarding Pokémon, some captivating discoveries have originated from Generation 3. Not only have hidden caches of unused map designs and artwork surfaced, but a multitude of abandoned creatures from Pokémon’s third generation have also been uncovered.
I’ve always been captivated by the intriguing world of Pokémon leaks, and it seems every generation, including the upcoming Gen 10, has had a piece of the action. Centro Leaks on X has been the primary source for these leaks, although much of the archival work has been carried out by The Cutting Room Floor, a dedicated wiki specializing in salvaged video game content.
Everything The Pokemon Leaks Tell Us About Ruby, Sapphire, And Emerald
Gen 3 Scrapped Pokemon And Scrapped Starter
15 abandoned Generation 3 Pokemon were discovered through Game Freak’s Teraleak, a collection initially compiled in a spreadsheet. As per leaks, these Pokemon were discarded after March 2002, which suggests they survived until late stages of development. Interestingly, many of these scrapped Pokemon come with their own artwork and comments from an unnamed developer. These notes offer insight into why most of these creatures were discarded, as they were deemed too similar to existing ones. Among them is Monorabi, a scrapped Pokemon resembling a fiery dog, which received the harshest criticism due to the comment “looks deformed.
One of the most recognized among these is the unreleased Gen 3 starter that wasn’t included in the final game. This unseen starter, known as Warabitto, was initially intended to be one of the trio for games like Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. However, it was replaced by Mudkip before the games were released. Leaked artwork of this unused starter depicts Warabitto as a white rabbit wearing a life jacket. Despite Mudkip’s popularity, many fans have grown fond of this aquatic bunny too.
Near sprite and sketch-based designs, recent Pokemon leaks have unveiled intricate concept art from Generation 3 as well. Among the discarded artwork for various Pokemon, there are some peculiar findings, such as unused Pokemon depicted in a much more rugged style. In one of these hidden folders, an unknown and previously unseen Pokemon is discovered, featuring a skull perched atop a bumpy green form. Additionally, early designs of flora and the Pokemon Navigator can be found within this collection.
Unused and Prototype Maps
An array of maps from earlier versions intended for Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald have been unveiled by Teraleak. Some of these places resemble their ultimate designs, while others underwent significant aesthetic changes, like Emerald’s Battle Dome. The design of Slateport City underwent a dramatic transformation between its early and final stages, and interestingly, the prototype city was originally where the Weather Institute was initially placed.
Upon examining these initial maps, it’s striking how the original Poke Mart layout featured a red-colored rooftop. Interestingly, the design of all Poke Marts in the final versions was altered to sport a blue roof, possibly to help differentiate them better from Poke Centers.
In the Pokemon Emerald game, The Battle Pike might be considered the prime instance of discarded map content rather than just prototype content. It appears that this map contains an original sample and a set of sprites which were potentially utilized to insert assets into the region’s map art. Furthermore, there seems to be an inconsistent Lobby area with disorganized sprites and most tiles being filled with a bright magenta color. Additionally, a discarded room known as Room 7 is hidden here—this long corridor with a red carpet running through it was not included in the final version of the game.
