As a dedicated fan who has weathered countless sleepless nights and days filled with anticipation for the return of one of my favorite horror franchises, it is with bated breath that I eagerly await the release of “28 Years Later.” Having lived through the original trilogy’s haunting and chilling portrayal of a post-apocalyptic Britain, I can only imagine the emotional turmoil and visceral terror that this new installment will bring.

In the last two decades, one of the most terrifying horror series is set to release a new chapter. The upcoming third installment in the “28 Days Later” series, titled “28 Years Later“, has been generating anticipation among fans for quite some time, despite lacking specific details about the film’s content. However, recent developments suggest that we might have some plot details soon.

Information that’s now being disclosed includes the rapid progress of the horror series. Not only has filming been completed for “28 Years Later,” but also for its sequel. As for when production on the third movie will begin, that remains unclear; however, it seems the project is advancing smoothly.

28 Years Later Details Are Enticing

28 Years Later star Ralph Fiennes recently chatted with Indiewire about the advancements in the production of the upcoming two movies. Not only did he reveal that filming for the following two installments in this cherished horror series has wrapped up, but he also shared insights regarding the storyline.

Fiennes mentioned that the upcoming movie resumes the story in a Britain which has been battling the rage plague for 28 years. The infection has spread so wildly that those afflicted have regained control of the country, much like in the original 28 Days Later. Despite this, there are still safe havens where uninfected individuals reside, evading the disease-carriers. Unlike its predecessor, this film focuses on a resourceful young boy who seeks aid for his ailing mother. To find assistance, the boy must navigate through the picturesque English countryside; however, the idyllic landscape is also teeming with infected creatures lurking in the woods and hills. The challenge, therefore, lies in finding help while avoiding these dangerous individuals.

In my excitement as a die-hard fan, I’d like to share an intriguing tidbit about the upcoming chapter in the 28 Days Later series that I recently learned from Fiennes. As the story unfolds, the young protagonist encounters a peculiar doctor who, despite his quirks, turns out to be a benevolent figure in this post-apocalyptic world.

With that synopsis, there are still some rather obvious questions, with the most prominent being how a disease that always burned itself out in a matter of weeks because the rage zombies died of thirst and starvation has taken over the entire country for several years. The most likely answer to that question is that the virus has mutated in a way that’s allowed the infected people to have some ability to think to the point where they understand they need to eat or drink. Or perhaps they’ve morphed more into full-on zombies that don’t need to eat or drink to remain upright, moving and infecting or killing everyone they run across. The good news is that the answer to those questions are on the verge of getting answered when Fiennes joins the other 28 Years Later stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and the returning Cillian Murphy who is expected to make a cameo appearance at least if he doesn’t have a larger role on June 30, 2025.
