Zero Sievert review

As a seasoned gamer with battle scars from countless lost lives, I must admit, Zero Sievert initially left me bruised and battered. The game’s unforgiving nature had me questioning my gaming skills and sanity, as I found myself hurling digital objects at my screen in frustration. But alas, the allure of progress and the tantalizing promise of improvement kept pulling me back.

Initially, I found it difficult to grasp the appeal of Zero Sievert. Frustrations ranged from contemplating smashing my computer screen to hurling my Steam Deck against the wall, yet persistence paid off in its merciless universe. Progress may be slow and arduous, but once you’ve geared up with suitable equipment and honed your skills, the game offers a challenging yet fulfilling experience. Despite its harshness and intensity, each failure serves as a valuable lesson. After spending a few hours with it, I found myself eager to return for another try.

In a post-apocalyptic Eastern Europe setting, you’re assigned to traverse various landscapes, gather necessary items, confront anything that poses a threat, and eventually return to the bunker using an extraction point. My initial playthrough ended abruptly due to failing to reload my weapon first. The second time, I encountered a group of wolves. In the third round, I overlooked a hidden sniper in the grass. This pattern repeated with new, harsh twists, instilling in me the importance of treading carefully and ensuring I’m as well-prepared as possible before venturing forth.

Each time you enter a new map, the locations are randomly arranged, so no two journeys start from the same spot. Upon disembarking the train, I’d consult the map, mark desired destinations with pins and also pin my exit point. Then, I would strategize the most efficient route across the map. While there were always creatures lurking and soldiers ready to attack without warning, having a plan made the journey less daunting.

Initially, after claiming the lives of some initial soldiers and ransacking their lifeless bodies, I started to comprehend why Zero Sievert was so appealing to numerous players during its Early Access phase. With gradual advancement, exploration became safer, allowing for the collection of money, weapons, and skill books that facilitated smoother playthroughs. However, the adversaries are relentless and cunning, necessitating meticulous navigation through environments; a single misstep could lead to instant demise. This constant danger develops into an addictive sensation, and the excitement becomes the driving force behind continuing yet another run.

As you delve deeper into the game, you’ll come across Non-Player Characters offering quests, enriching your journey with new objectives and layers. This unexpected depth enhances your overall experience, making you grow fond of Zero Sievert. The sense of accomplishment from completing these quests only fuels your affection for the game. Returning to the bunker to acquire new weapons and abilities for your next adventure creates a delightful loop of anticipation for the thrill that this violent universe consistently offers, as each playthrough is unique.

The design of this game features minimalistic and straightforward visuals, providing a retro-style top-down perspective that enhances ease of play. Shooting is generally straightforward, however, precise aiming is crucial for some weapons. Navigating the menus becomes more convenient with a mouse, but playing on Steam Deck remains manageable while exploring the wilderness. Additionally, it offers multiple adjustment options to accommodate players of all skill levels, allowing you to customize various aspects of gameplay to your preference.

Zero Sieverts stands out as a challenging loot shooter; the more time you invest, the better the payoff. Mastering enemy patterns and discovering optimal tactics for elimination was an integral part of my enjoyment. Scavenging loot from fallen foes and supply containers develops into an engrossing habit. The exhilaration of reaching the extraction point while safeguarding valuable rewards and eluding demise is unparalleled. With its randomly generated levels and user-friendly design, it’s a game that can captivate a diverse audience.
