As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of video game puzzles, from the simple to the mind-boggling complex. In the grand scheme of things, puzzles aren’t everything that makes a game great, but they do add an extra layer of depth and challenge that can elevate a title from good to extraordinary. That being said, when it comes to Indiana Jones, a character synonymous with adventure, mystery, and puzzles, I expect the puzzles to be nothing short of spectacular.
In the game “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” developed by MachineGames, puzzles play a significant part and are designed to be engaging and surprising for those who want to explore its expansive Indiana Jones universe thoroughly.
Recently, I was fortunate enough to chat with Jens Andersson, the creative mind behind the puzzle design in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Although he emphasized that puzzles aren’t the main focus of this game, he assured us that they will certainly steal the show! The design balances easy-to-solve and challenging puzzles, promising an engaging and rewarding experience for all Indiana Jones fans.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s Puzzles Are a Mixed Bag of Difficulties
In the Indiana Jones movies, while there might not be extensive periods devoted to solving puzzles, it remains a distinctive feature in every tale. Leaving out this element from Indiana Jones and the Great Circle would be a mistake. Crafting puzzles for the game required creativity, as several of the on-screen puzzles can sometimes provide too much information and might not work effectively in a video game setting. When questioned about the puzzle design process for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Andersson explained…
In the film, an ‘X’ is indicated on the ground when you examine certain puzzles. It doesn’t mean that these are particularly challenging video game-style puzzles.
To make puzzles enjoyable in a game rather than an annoyance, developers need to strike a good balance of challenge level. Puzzles should often be difficult enough to catch players off guard, as this element can enhance their enjoyment. Yet, it’s crucial that the puzzles aren’t too hard that players get stuck and can’t advance in the game if they fail to solve them. As Andersson explained further…
In our design process, we aimed to incorporate a substantial amount of puzzle elements into the game. The result is an assortment of diverse puzzles, some large and strategically placed along the golden path that players must solve. Our hint system is comprehensive and the overall atmosphere is quite grandiose in certain aspects. However, these puzzles are not intended to be the most challenging in the game; our goal is to ensure that players can progress without encountering insurmountable obstacles. Despite the availability of hints, we aim to exceed the level of difficulty found in many other games.
In Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the story-related puzzles are designed to be straightforward for those primarily interested in the narrative. However, for players seeking a bit of adventure off the main path, they might stumble upon tougher puzzles that require more exploration. As for the game’s harder puzzles, Andersson mentioned:
To completely conquer the game, continue playing as you will uncover all its hidden elements. However, keep in mind that your quest won’t be easy; you’ll need to search extensively and tackle challenging puzzles along the way. There might be some guidance here and there, but for the tougher parts, you’ll have to put in the effort yourself.
As an enthusiast, I can’t help but appreciate the inclusion of puzzles in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, even though they might not be the central focus of gameplay. These brain-ticklers offer a refreshing change of pace between the main objectives, keeping the experience engaging and diverse. It’s delightful that these puzzles come in varying degrees of complexity depending on their connection to the main narrative, catering to different playstyles and enhancing the overall appeal.
