As a longtime gamer with countless hours spent navigating virtual worlds and collecting digital trinkets, I must say that Astro’s Bot Wild-Ride Outfit collection has left quite an impression on me. From the whimsical Kat outfit to the golden pro gamer aesthetic, these skins have managed to capture the essence of gaming culture with remarkable accuracy.
Team Asobi’s Astro Bot is essentially an affectionate tribute not just to the PlayStation platform, but also to the gaming industry in general. The game features numerous cameos as around 150 (and growing) bots, who originate from a wide range of games, from those long-forgotten to the truly iconic classics.
Not only that, but you also have access to special outfits that Astro can change in and out of.
After locating the 48 concealed puzzle parts, you’ll gain access to a space called the “Transforming Dressing Room,” which showcases approximately 20 unique wardrobes, symbolically associated with privileged bot characters.
Most of these costumes can be obtained by using the in-game Gacha Lab machine at a reasonable cost of 100 coins. However, some are exclusive to premium members or can be earned through completing challenges.
All of those outfits look good on Astro, but there are bound to be some that outshine the others.
Unless otherwise stated, all outfits can be acquired from the Gacha Lab.
20 Stealth Outfit
Unfortunately, They’ll Still See You Coming
The “Stealth” costume is an exclusive item you can acquire from the Gacha Lab; however, unlike its name suggests, it doesn’t provide any advantages for stealthy movements.
To put it frankly, I’m at a loss as to why Team Asobi endorsed this ensemble. Perhaps it was a hidden invisibility power-up, or maybe it was simply overlooked altogether.
Although the transparent attire is intended to give an air of mystery, it unfortunately erases Astro’s facial features and any hint of color. The transparency makes his expressive eyes disappear entirely.
19 Cheeky Ape Outfit
All Monkey Business
The Cheeky Ape Outfit is an homage to the numerous apes found in the “Ape Escape” video games, as well as the “Apes on the Loose” level in “Astro Bot”.
It seems to me that this costume is among Astro’s most eccentric ones. Just like the last one, Astro’s entire face is hidden behind the ape mask, yet oddly enough, his hands and feet can be seen.
As a gamer, I’d say this suit is perfect for blending in when role-playing as the savior of those gorillas from the Gorilla Nebula, but outside that context, it seems a bit out of place and not quite fitting.
18 Skelly Outfit
Necromancy Is A Dying Art
If you’re aiming for a look that resembles the countless space-scattered bot skeletons, then the Skelly costume would be an ideal choice for you.
I’ve always admired the tiny details behind the skeletons in Astro Bot, as they play into the concept of what a cartoon robot skeleton would look like.
As a gamer, I appreciate the cool detailing on Astro’s design – the absent faceplate and those eerie glowing eyes. It offers a glimpse into the intricate inner workings of him and his mechanical companions. The subtle world-building is spot-on, making the game universe feel more immersive and authentic.
As a gamer, I initially thought this getup was a nod to the classic game MediEvil, but it turns out to be just a standard skeleton costume. A tad disappointing, given the potential for an awesome homage.
17 Fungus Head Outfit
Do You Hear A Clicker!?
Compared to other outfits inspired by the game “The Last of Us”, this one features a more straightforward design.
Frankly speaking, I don’t have a strong affinity for it given its association with such a prominent brand. Astro, unlike his counterpart from Crash Site, is dressed casually and sports fungi on his head. Notably, the attire doesn’t alter Astro’s eyes to red as it does for the other robot.
It could be more effective to alter Astro’s appearance to resemble a Clicker, yet this change may clash with the playful atmosphere of Astro Bot.
It looks silly, if anything, but not very appealing as an outfit.
16 Bovine Outfit
Udderly Adorable
In the gaming world I inhabit, animal-themed costumes never fail to be adorable and quirky, and it’s true for Astro Bot as well. Dressing up Astro in the Bovine outfit gives him a charming resemblance to the cows we encounter in the Safari and specific other levels.
Although the cow’s head size may seem odd compared to its body in Astro’s perspective, it’s a minor detail. Put on this attire and engage with the cow within the safari, and you’re guaranteed an adorable interaction!
15 Pro Driver Outfit
The Stig Has Competition
The Pro Driver outfit is a direct reference to the Gran Turismo games, and with so many other racing references, it’s a shame we didn’t get any racing game-related levels.
Given that Astro is rapidly gaining popularity as Sony’s potential new symbol, I believe it would be appropriate to develop a racing game similar to Mario Kart, featuring characters from the PlayStation universe.
This ensemble appears thoughtfully designed, and it has a tangible realism reminiscent of the popular racing games, Gran Turismo. The helmet, too, seems robust, although for Astro, collisions and head traumas seem to be the least of his concerns.
14 Horned Protector Outfit
Emotional Support Hero
In this case, you’ll find an ensemble that takes design cues from the main character in the game titled “Ico”. This outfit features prominent horns and a vibrant smock, but unlike the original, it doesn’t come equipped with the accompanying ‘escort mission’.
This outfit is adorably suited for a character like Astro, and it seems that Team Asobi appreciates Team Ico’s creativity, as they incorporate elements from all their games, such as Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian.
It seems that the main character from their previous game was left out. Perhaps they didn’t leave a lasting impact.
13 Eco Warrior Outfit
Ottsel Sidekick Not Included
The attire follows the style of Jak’s character from the initial “Jak and Daxter” game, featuring sharp ears, glasses, and vibrant green hair. Regrettably, no small figure of Daxter accompanies this costume.
Although Jak and Daxter may not see a fourth main game or move beyond the PlayStation 2 platform, fans can still enjoy a new outfit design for the series!
It would have been cool to also have the more gruff and mature Jak featured here too, but hey, we can’t have it all, can we?
12 Teddy Outfit
UnBEARably Cute
Among the skins listed for Astro, this one resembles a cuddly teddy bear toy from your childhood, making it the second animal-themed option.
The plush teddy bear attire, with its round and gentle contours, exudes a warm, huggable vibe, making it among the sweetest costumes suited for our furry friend, Astro.
Rather than dressing up like characters from different video games, how about making an appealing image while you traverse through space instead?
11 Tooled-Up Mechanic Outfit
Robotic Sidekick Not Included
Gather nuts, bolts, and wield bizarre weapons by donning this attire inspired by the iconic PlayStation series, Ratchet & Clank.
Similar to the Eco Warrior ensemble, this outfit shares a resemblance with the initial game, as Astro bares his chest much like Ratchet does. Seems chilly, mate!
Well, I suppose it doesn’t really alter much since Astro, my character, essentially runs around in the buff throughout the game to begin with.
10 Ring-Tailed Thief Outfit
Become A Master Thief
Yet another outfit based on a PlayStation classic. Sneak up on your enemies and find lost treasures with Sly Cooper’s getup.
I’m genuinely bummed out about the fact that Sucker Punch won’t be developing a fresh Sly Cooper title any time soon. However, let’s take solace in the fact that we’ll get to enjoy a PS5 version of our favorite game!
At a quick look, the ensemble appears quite straightforward, but upon closer inspection, you’ll spot that Astro’s faceplate matches perfectly with Sly’s mask, and he dons a set of oversized gloves as well.
9 Default Outfit
The Good Old Classic
Without a doubt, Astro’s design truly captivates me! He embodies the essence of a fantastic PlayStation emblem, and his visual cues are instantly expressive.
The striking blue-and-white color scheme harmonizes beautifully with the sleek appearance of the PS5, while Astro’s slender, gracefully flowing cape imbues him with an air of both heroism and mischief.
Based on the success of Astro Bot, I am certain that its unique design will become as iconic and easily recognizable as any other PlayStation character.
8 Red Panda Outfit
The Best Type Of Panda
The third and last animal outfit, and it’s the best one. Why? Because red pandas are freaking adorable, that’s why.
There’s something irresistibly cute about the red panda outfit. The triangular ears and bright orange color scheme fit Astro’s vibe so well, making him look extra cuddly.
7 Wandering Trespasser
Become A Giant Killer
Conquer gigantic monsters while wearing the Wandering Trespasser attire, an obvious homage to Wander from the game “Shadow of the Colossus.
In contrast to Ico’s design, Wander’s attire and hairstyle stand out distinctly due to their unique characteristics.
It’s peculiar that Team Asobi only incorporated costumes for Ico and Wander, but left out a costume from The Last Guardian to make it a trio of outfits.
6 Lovestruck Lyricist Outfit
If Only You Could Breakdance In This…
PaRappa the Rapper is a lesser-known rhythm game. If you’re not familiar with it, that’s understandable as it didn’t gain widespread popularity after only two games, despite being the original rhythm game.
Without PaRappa, we likely wouldn’t have had games like Guitar Hero or Dance Dance Revolution. Despite its unusual graphics and humorous narrative, Parappa the Rapper truly deserves a great deal of recognition.
This fashionable and adorable ensemble suits Astro well, as Parappa’s clothing style is reminiscent of ’90s hip-hop. In my opinion, it gives Astro a very cool and trendy appearance.
5 Pirate Outfit
It’ll Curb The Scurvy
Isn’t everyone fond of a pirate-themed attire? Just as Astronaut Astro wears his standard suit, there’s no harm in donning a common costume to add some excitement, and this adorable buccaneer outfit certainly does the trick!
Wearing a stylish hat and loose jacket that evoke a sense of daring explorations, it seems perfectly appropriate for a character in an adventure game to don pirate attire. Among all the outfits available, this might just be the most fitting choice for the bot in Astro Bot.
4 Gravity Shifter Outfit
Newton Who?
Astro may not typically be recognized for his long, golden hair, but you could effortlessly mistake him for Kat with this ensemble, as he’s definitely pulling off the style beautifully!
I regret to inform you that while Astro does have some impressive movement technology, it can’t actually fly – at least, not without a boost from a power-up.
In this game, there’s just one costume that portrays the main female character, disregarding the Aloy enhancement. It’s somewhat disappointing, but having any representation is preferable to none.
Couldn’t it be delightful to imagine that Team Asobi expands their collection with outfits similar to this one, maybe including designs from games such as Nier: Automata, Hellblade, or Mirror’s Edge in the future?
3 Golden Outfit
MLG Pro Gamer Aesthetic
If you lavish an excessive quantity of gold on any object within a game, players will promptly utilize it as a means to flaunt their superior gaming skills. Consequently, the golden item becomes highly sought-after and desirable.
You could rephrase that statement like this: “You may wonder, ‘Why is this gold skin ranked so highly if it’s not popular?’ To be honest, it’s mostly because of nostalgia. Gold skins, despite being a common eyesore nowadays, held significant value in the early days of gaming, as they were once coveted rewards.
This accessory package includes a Gold-tinted DualSense cover, complementing its design. Moreover, owning this Digital Deluxe Edition signifies that you’ve opted for an enhanced version of the product.
2 Yharnam Hunter Outfit
An Eldritch Delight
It seems unlikely that the long-awaited PC version of the game “Bloodborne” will ever be officially released, but on a positive note, Team Asobi is showing it some attention, much like how Sony has overlooked many other original intellectual properties they own.
Too bad about that, but the Hunter suit stands out as the most impressive guest appearance costume. It gives Astro a sleek and tough image, although you may find yourself tempted to grab the gun and knife from another Hunter robot in the Crash Site.
1 Throwback Outfit
How Nostalgic!
The Throwback Outfit is undoubtedly my favorite outfit. You can earn this outfit by completing the Great Master Challenge. Not only that, it comes with a retro PS1 DualSense skin for your speeder.
Experiencing a vintage vibe, it seems as if you’ve truly worked for this reward rather than carelessly spending coins in the Gacha Lab.
This skin fundamentally changes Astro’s appearance, making his visuals seem more angular with its low poly count. To celebrate the PlayStation legacy, it’s only fitting to have a retro PS1 skin to cap it all off.
