The Day Before Developers Fntastic Want You To Design Levels For Them, But They Won’t Pay You

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say I’m intrigued and yet slightly amused by Fntastic’s latest venture. It seems they’ve decided to dip their toes back into the fan-submission pool with their new game, ITEMS.

The creators of the unsuccessful extract-based shooter “The Day Before” are inviting individuals to create levels for their upcoming project, titled ITEMS. Fntastic announced this competition on their Discord server (credit: Eurogamer), where they’re seeking community contributions to design a map for their new game endeavor.

The catch is, the winner of the contest won’t be paid for their work.

The announcement stated that this competition offers you an opportunity to showcase your creative side by creating a map. If your design triumphs, it will be incorporated into the game during upcoming updates.

The guidelines for entering the “contest” were explained, specifying that entries can take the form of 2D sketches, 3D sculptures, or any other creative style. Alongside the map layout, participants must also provide images, artwork, a comprehensive description, the theme of the map, and considerations for its balance.

The key point is that the individual who develops the winning entry won’t be compensated financially for the effort invested in creating the map. Instead, they will only receive a copy of the game (if it ever comes out) and the map they designed for use within the game, along with their name appearing on the map somewhere.

As of publishing, six maps have been submitted.

Fntastic’s History With Fan Submissions

Fantastic isn’t just asking for fan-made map designs now; this is a practice the studio has employed before during the creation of The Day Before. In fact, they often relied on unpaid volunteers from diverse locations worldwide, such as Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Finland, and beyond, to contribute to their game development process.

At one point, the studio claimed to be using over 100 full time volunteers.
