Nightingale Developer Inflexion Games Is Laying Off Staff

As a dedicated fan of Nightingale, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness upon hearing the news of the staff layoffs and the closure of Inflexion Games‘ UK studio. The game has been a captivating journey through the Faewilds, and it’s heart-wrenching to see such talented individuals losing their jobs due to industry realities that are beyond anyone’s control.

UPDATE: Inflexion Games has made an official announcement regarding their staff reductions, closure of their UK branch, and the current status of the project known as Nightingale.

The statement can be read below:

Over the last few weeks at Inflexion Games, we’ve faced some incredibly tough times, and there are no words sufficient to convey the deep sorrow we feel. Much like other studios in recent years, we’ve been confronted by the harsh truths of our industry. After thoroughly investigating all available solutions, we’ve been forced to take a painful step: letting go of some exceptional and skilled team members.

Despite the achievements we’ve made with Nightingale so far, and the enthusiasm from our community, the Early Access launch hasn’t generated enough commercial success to maintain development at our current studio scale. Consequently, we are implementing a restructuring plan in Canada, and we will also be shutting down our UK office.

Our priority is to support each member of the team affected by the reductions as they search for new opportunities. We thank them for their invaluable contributions to Nightingale – it would not have been possible without their immense talent and passion for adventuring in the Faewilds.

As a fellow fan, I want to express that we’re navigating through some challenging times as a studio, but rest assured, we’re all hands on deck, collaborating closely with our players to push forward together. I’m here to engage with the community, and soon I’ll share more about our exciting upcoming developments. In the interim, let’s extend our heartfelt gratitude to those departing team members for their invaluable contributions.

Aaryn Flynn, CEO, Inflexion Games

The team behind the game Nightingale, Inflexion Games, has announced that they will be letting go of several employees due to some changes they’re making within their organization.

Through an affirmation to GamesIndustry.net (GIN), it was implied that certain business decisions were influenced, in part, by the current state of the gaming industry.

Following an extensive evaluation of various possibilities, we’ve had to make a challenging choice to reorganize our studio in order to secure its future viability. Regrettably, this change will result in us parting ways with some exceptionally skilled and committed staff members.

The statement emphasizes that their approach during the entire procedure is guided by empathy, dignity, and concern for each person impacted. They are making every effort to guide them through this time and assist them in discovering fresh prospects.

As a gamer myself, I’ve noticed that Nightingale hasn’t been able to keep up with its current size based on my own experience and what I’ve read from GIbiz. When it first launched back in February, the game peaked at around 47,569 players, according to SteamDB. However, since then, the number of players has dropped significantly. In fact, in the last 30 days, I’ve only seen a peak of about 3,000 players playing this game.

According to a report from the outlet, an anonymous source at Inflexion Games claims that around 22 employees were terminated. TopMob is seeking confirmation on the exact number of layoffs from Inflexion Games themselves.

Currently, Inflexion Games is under the ownership of Tencent, having acquired the company back in 2022. Regrettably, by the year 2024, it’s estimated that approximately 14,000 jobs within the gaming sector were eliminated due to layoffs.

The game Nightingale continues to be available in its early release stage on Steam. At this time, it’s not certain where Inflexion Games stands with Nightingale’s development, nor can we predict when the game might exit the early access phase.
