As a seasoned cowboy who’s ridden through the dusty trails of West America since the days of Marston and Van der Linde, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for the good old days when Red Dead Redemption graced our screens. And yet, as I gaze into the horizon, hoping for a third installment in this epic saga, I find myself questioning the path that Rockstar might tread.
2018’s “Red Dead Redemption 2” appears to be gaining even more respect with each year that passes. Although the original “Red Dead Redemption” was undeniably successful, and anticipation for its sequel was already high, few would have guessed at the depth, heart, and insight that “Red Dead Redemption 2” would bring to its storyline and world. This has made a potential third installment in the series more intriguing than ever before.
As a passionate fan, I’ve often pondered about the potential directions for the Red Dead series after the gripping conclusion of Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). Given that both games end tragically for their protagonists, it seems likely that a potential third installment might introduce a new character.
There’s definitely interest in another installment of “Red Dead Redemption”, but it’s important to note that Rockstar Games has not made any formal announcement about it one way or the other. What follows is just conjecture.
The Case for Red Dead Redemption 3 To Be a Hard Reboot
Red Dead Redemption Doesn’t Have Many Places To Go With Its Story
It’s quite logical why they chose to make “Red Dead Redemption 2” a prequel, as the events of this game significantly contribute to the narrative and backstory of its predecessor. By exploring more details about certain plot points and character histories, it adds depth to the overall storyline. Furthermore, being a prequel enables it to maintain and further develop the themes present in the original game, such as freedom, loyalty, and order. In essence, these two games are interconnected, contributing to a unified, detailed, and epic narrative tapestry.
Just as every great tale concludes, this one has reached its finish. It’s okay if not all the details about each character’s conclusion are clear to the audience. A sequel focusing on Sadie, Charles, Jack, or another favorite outlaw might lessen their significance from previous games, transforming them from vital parts of Arthur or John’s story into mere cash cows for more content. Similarly, a potential Red Dead Redemption 3 could be another prequel, portraying the Dutch Van der Linde Gang in their prime. However, such an approach would likely result in repetitive, unoriginal, foreseeable, weak, and contrived content, particularly when compared to the groundbreaking RDR2.
Red Dead Has Done a Soft Reboot Already
Although Red Dead Revolver wasn’t as famous or influential as the Redemption series, it was the initial entry in the series before the focus shifted to John and Arthur. This means that the idea of restarting the franchise with new characters for a potential Red Dead Redemption 3 (or another name) isn’t entirely outlandish. It’s also important not to forget about the Grand Theft Auto series, where Rockstar has shown a knack for telling diverse stories, albeit only loosely connected.
It seems like this could be the sole viable option for the future of the franchise. In the worst case scenario, it might be the only choice that avoids creatively draining the series by resurrecting the characters and themes from Red Dead Redemption in a way that might be seen as twisted necromancy, and most fans would likely prefer no sequel over such an outcome.
