Best Video Game Supporting Characters

As someone who has traversed through the realms of mythology, time-loops, and the underworld, I must say that these characters have left quite an impression on me.

A proper narrative is made up of protagonists, antagonists, and characters that support both.

Although the main character’s story should take center stage, it doesn’t necessarily play out that way in the collective mindset of the audience.

Some supporting characters, through their charming characteristics or unique appearances, often steal a significant amount of attention from the main characters.

They continue to linger in our minds even after a game’s debut, as certain actions or words they performed left a lasting impact upon us.

On occasion, these secondary characters can end up being adored just as much, if not more, than the main heroes or villains themselves.

11 Kim Kitsuragi

Disco Elysium

10 Best Video Game Supporting Characters

In Disco Elysium, our main character, Harry DuBois, is in such a disorganized state that he can’t manage the investigation by himself.

Thankfully, he has the assistance of RCM lieutenant Kim Kitsuragi along with him on the case.

Apart from simply being kind-hearted and trustworthy, Kim stands out as the sole beacon of logical thinking and rationality, helping Harry navigate his sometimes questionable perspectives.

It’s quite ironic, given that Harry’s mind is constantly buzzing with the metaphorical voice of Reason.

9 HK-47

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

Best Video Game Supporting Characters

In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the main character buys a droid that seems like it’s for communication purposes, specifically with the Tusken Raiders of Tatooine.

That droid, HK-47, was actually a skilled assassin droid, and quite proud of it, too.

In a more straightforward manner: HK-47 has an affinity for mindless aggression and, given the chance, he’d eliminate the main character, but his programming prohibits it.

That programming also forces him to keep his interactions cordial and professional, which leads to one of the most polite and affable sociopaths you’ll ever meet.

In a straightforward and conversational manner: HK-47 often refers to individuals as “meatbags” directly, then inquires if there’s someone they want killed, which makes him an ideal partner during a malevolent role-playing game experience.

8 Solaire Of Astora

Dark Souls

Best Video Game Supporting Characters

In the realm of Dark Souls, it’s undeniable that it’s far from cheerful – in fact, it’s about as uncheerful as it gets. Yet, despite its grim nature, there are moments of lightness to be found within.

One of its brightest spots is Solaire of Astora of the Warriors of Sunlight.

Eager admirer of Gwyn, the Lord of Cinders, Solaire intentionally transformed into an undead being to search for his personal “sun” – a reference to Gwyn’s origin – within the birthplace of Gwyn.

Although Solaire’s zealousness might become excessive at times, he serves as one of the most consistent allies throughout the game, especially if you handle his questline appropriately.

7 Elizabeth

BioShock Infinite

Best Video Game Supporting Characters

In BioShock Infinite, it’s Elizabeth, a young woman, whom Booker DeWitt was initially tasked with rescuing from the sky-bound metropolis known as Columbia in order to gain his freedom.

Because Elizabeth has been sheltered all her life, she has a sunny, somewhat naive disposition.

As a devoted admirer, I’d say she offers a refreshing contrast to Booker’s rugged, disillusioned perspective. Interestingly, throughout our narrative journey, her influence and his gradually intertwine, shaping both their characters in a fascinating dance of perspectives.

In the Burial at Sea DLC for the game, it’s Elizabeth who ultimately takes center stage, effectively assuming the role of the main character.

6 Iron Fist Alexander

Elden Ring

Best Video Game Supporting Characters

In Elden Ring’s realm known as the Lands Between, you’ll encounter Jars that exhibit life and may assault if they perceive you as a threat.

The exception to this is the Warrior Jar, Iron Fist Alexander.

Alexander displays the character traits of a chivalrous knight from old tales, eagerly participating in battles as a means to grow and improve himself.

Indeed, Alexander’s self-improvement regimen involves incorporating the discarded remains of vanquished foes into his own body.

Regardless, despite his flaws, he’s known for being exceptionally jovial in the Lands Between, and consistently popular among fans when he makes an appearance.

5 Nick Valentine

Fallout 4

Best Video Game Supporting Characters

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but sing praises for the enigmatic cast of recruitable companions in Fallout 4. Among them all, there’s no denying that the most captivating character is none other than the shrewd detective residing within Diamond City’s walls – the one and only, Nick Valentine.

The prototype synthesizer, nicknamed Nick, escaped from the Institute, carrying within it the recollections of a detective from before the war, in its memory banks.

He’s got the voice and mannerisms of Humphrey Bogart with a face like a used leather chair, and boy, does he have that noir charm in spades.

Nick plays a crucial role as one of your key allies, assisting you in locating Kellogg during the main narrative and offering valuable insights in the Far Harbor expansion pack.

4 Dusa

Hades

Best Video Game Supporting Characters

In Hades, you’ll meet a variety of characters, ranging from divine entities reminiscent of gods to illustrious figures straight out of Greek myths.

Dusa is neither of those, merely a disembodied gorgon head working as the House of Hades’ maid.

Among the larger-than-life deities you’re accustomed to, Dusa stands out as the most human-like character. Her earthy demeanor serves as a refreshing change of pace, much like a palette cleanser between courses.

Initially enamored by Zagreus, she eventually develops into one of his closest companions, a role he initially had only a few of.

3 Loop

In Stars And Time

Best Video Game Supporting Characters

While engaging in the game “Stars and Time”, it’s just you and a cryptic character named ‘Loop’ who understands the complex time loop situation of Siffrin within Dormant.

Without disclosing the specifics, Loop seems to possess substantial knowledge about Siffrin and is eager to extend all the assistance he can.

Loop usually approaches things with a touch of snappiness and annoyance, yet it’s clear that their intention is largely sincere.

This point is particularly evident when Siffrin becomes overwhelmed following what appears to be endless repetition, and Loop tries their utmost to offer comfort to him.

2 Sans

Undertale

Best Video Game Supporting Characters

Without a doubt, Sans is a figure well-known to many in the gaming community since 2015. Regardless of whether you’re an Undertale novice or have been keeping up with the gaming world, chances are good that you’ve encountered this iconic character at least once.

On the outside, Sans appears as a classic lovable couch potato, often seen in his pajamas and frequently taking breaks from work for a quick bite to eat.

Yet, Sans subtly hints that his laid-back attitude is more of a choice than a compulsion, as he has some exceptionally deep hidden layers.

Among all creatures lurking beneath the surface, Sans stands out as one of the most menacing. If he gets a chance, he’ll show you just how dangerous he is, and he won’t hesitate to do it again and again if required.

1 Goro Majima

Like A Dragon Series

Best Video Game Supporting Characters

Initially appearing as a free-spirited counterpart to Kiryu in the first Yakuza game, Goro Majima, also known as the “Mad Dog of Shimano,” embodies a blend of raw instincts and strong moral values.

He is a bloodthirsty crook to an extent, but he only picks fights with those who can give him a run for his money, like Kiryu.

Throughout the series, Majima demonstrates a unique and somewhat peculiar set of moral principles he adheres to unwaveringly, which can appear irregular and contradictory at times.

It’s not surprising that he ultimately appeared for the first time as a playable character in Yakuza 0, demonstrating his immense strength, not only physically but also in terms of his character.
