Marvel Mystic Mayhem Can Right the Wrongs of Midnight Suns' Roster

As a die-hard Marvel fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of the Marvel universe, I can confidently say that the upcoming game, Marvel Mystic Mayhem, has all the potential to be a true gem in the Marvel gaming world. Having grown up reading comics and watching movies, I’ve seen the evolution of Marvel’s spellcasters and supernatural heroes, and it’s exciting to see this focus being emphasized in Mystic Mayhem.

Discussed on October 16th, the upcoming game titled Marvel Mystic Mayhem has sparked much conjecture. Unlike numerous other Marvel games, Marvel Mystic Mayhem concentrates significantly on characters with magical abilities and the supernatural realm. Interestingly, a tactical role-playing game under the Marvel brand previously aimed to center around spellcasters.

In the game Marvel’s Midnight Suns, players engage in combat against Lilith, the Demon Mother. Lilith assumed her demonic form following a pact with Chthon, the architect of the Darkhold. While Lilith herself does not aim to conquer the world, it is Hydra who harbors such intentions. This storyline bears resemblance to that of Mystic Mayhem, which introduces Nightmare, a villain intent on transforming Earth into a dreadful reflection of the Dream Dimension. However, Midnight Suns omits several supernatural Marvel characters from its narrative.

Both Mystic Mayhem and Midnight Suns Need Spellcasters and the Supernatural

Both games feature narratives that demand characters skilled in magic and heroes familiar with the supernatural to combat mystical perils within the Marvel universe. Notably, Midnight Suns boasts Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch among its playable lineup, a strategic decision given Lilith’s association with the Darkhold. Similarly, Mystic Mayhem spotlights these characters significantly.

In contrast to the other game, Midnight Suns’ character selection was found deficient when it came to witches. Only Magik and Nico Minoru (Sister Grimm) were included as spellcasters among the playable characters, while Blade and Ghost Rider were the only supernatural heroes available in the base version of the game. Morbius is accessible through Midnight Suns’ DLC, but the roster still lacks several significant characters.

Moon Knight is missing from Midnight Suns, but Mystic Mayhem has corrected this oversight by adding him to its team along with Sleepwalker. However, even though Mystic Mayhem includes some lesser-known characters in its roster, comic book aficionados will recognize that heroes like Armor and Psylocke are mutants rather than sorcerers. Additionally, Doppelganger, Man-Thing, and Mister Negative were created through experiments instead of relying on mystical powers.

Characters that Mystic Mayhem Should Add to Its Roster

In comparison to Mystic Mayhem, Midnight Suns boasts an impressive lineup of mystical playable characters. As more details about the mobile team-based tactical RPG emerge, it’s suggested that NetEase and Marvel contemplate these heroes for potential new additions. Indeed, they might draw inspiration from Midnight Suns by incorporating Magik and Nico Minoru into Mystic Mayhem. However, taking cues from critically acclaimed characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be a more promising approach.

In the lineup of Marvel Studios Special Presentations, Werewolf by Night stands out with a more artistic approach compared to other MCU productions. The monochrome cinematography in this 2022 television special doesn’t compromise its storyline or the introduction of fresh lore within the MCU, but instead enhances its chilling ambiance. The positive reception of this MCU special indicates that Werewolf by Night could fittingly appear in Mystic Mayhem.

Adding characters like Jack Russell (better known as Werewolf by Night) and Elsa Bloodstone to the game Mystic Mayhem not only intensifies the horror element but also brings in two skilled monster hunters. These characters, given their expertise, would be ideal partners in tracking down terrifying nightmares. This strategy mirrors that of Midnight Suns, where the vampire hunter Blade is playable. Interestingly, Elsa Bloodstone has already made appearances in other Marvel video games, such as Marvel Snap and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order.

Spoilers ahead for the Marvel TV series
Agatha All Along.

Mystic Mayhem Would Benefit From Agatha All Along’s Characters

Building on the success of “Agatha All Along,” a recent addition to Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) TV series lineup, it would be quite logical for NetEase and Marvel to seize this opportunity. In this series, Agatha Harkness reappears, captivating audiences once more, while also introducing Billy Kaplan, famously known as Wiccan by fans of the Young Avengers, who is none other than Wanda Maximoff’s son.

In light of Mystic Mayhem being influenced more by comics than the MCU, it’s possible that the game could include a playable character based on Agatha Harkness, with her design emphasizing her original comic book look. Unfortunately, Agatha was only an NPC (Non-Player Character) in Marvel’s Midnight Suns. For this new game, Agatha could be portrayed as an elderly, wise figure serving as a supportive character. It’s worth mentioning that there have been younger versions of Agatha in Marvel Comics, but her origin story may benefit from further exploration and adaptation.

Instead of initially portraying Agatha as a comics character, let’s introduce Wiccan as an apprentice mage. Since Scarlet Witch is available in Mystic Mayhem, having Wiccan, who shares similar powers, might not be the most compelling choice. However, if NetEase and Marvel present Wiccan learning under Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch, his inclusion could be justified by giving him a unique power set distinct from his mother’s. This narrative would align well with the comics, as Wiccan often collaborates with Doctor Strange and is sometimes depicted as Strange’s potential successor as Sorcerer Supreme.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m just as eager as you are to dive into the magic-filled world of Marvel Mystic Mayhem! However, it seems we don’t have a firm release date yet. This means we’re all in the dark about when the game might unveil its roster. But fear not, fellow gamers! Keep your eyes peeled for some exciting new spellcasters joining Marvel Mystic Mayhem soon.
