Conventional computing architectures suffer a persistent latency and energy bottleneck due to the separation of selection and memory access. This paper introduces Attractor-Keyed Memory (AKM), a paradigm that merges these operations by decoding the high-dimensional physical signatures produced during state selection in physical systems. We demonstrate that, given repeatable signatures and a single calibration step-certified by singular value decomposition-a linear decoder can map these signatures directly to arbitrary payloads, effectively eliminating the need for a separate fetch operation. The central open question remains whether real-world devices exhibit the necessary stereotypy in their selection signatures to enable this fundamentally new form of computation.

Without this precise mapping, even the most sensitive sensors become unreliable, hindering accurate data acquisition and interpretation.

The accurate retrieval of information from sensors often hinges on establishing a precise ‘signature’ – a unique representation of how a device responds to a specific input, or payload. This signature isn’t simply a direct reading, but rather a carefully constructed profile designed to minimize the impact of inherent noise and variability. Recent research indicates that an oversampling ratio of M_{sig}/K = 2 provides an optimal balance; this means collecting twice as many data points as strictly necessary to define the signal. This approach demonstrably limits error amplification during signal recovery and ensures stable conditioning of the data, effectively filtering out unwanted disturbances and yielding a robust, reliable output even in challenging environments. The result is a system capable of consistently and accurately discerning the intended payload from the complexities of the sensor response.

The process of linear decoding frequently results in an underdetermined system of equations due to the typical scenario where the number of potential payload elements exceeds the number of available signature measurements. The resulting vector x is guaranteed to be a solution to Ax = b and possesses the smallest ||x|| among all possible solutions.

Establishing the Foundation: Calibration and Signature Construction

Calibration establishes a fundamental mapping between applied payloads – the intended stimuli or signals – and the resulting responses measured from the device. This process effectively creates a ‘dictionary’ or Signature Matrix Φ which defines the expected device behavior for known inputs. The accuracy of this mapping is paramount; errors in calibration directly translate to inaccuracies in payload reconstruction, as the decoder relies on this established relationship to interpret incoming signals. Without a precise dictionary, distinguishing between legitimate signals and noise becomes significantly more difficult, ultimately limiting the system’s performance and reliability.

The Signature Matrix, denoted as Φ, is a fundamental component established through the Calibration process. It is constructed by analyzing measured responses from the device under various known input conditions. Each column of Φ represents the mean signature – the average device response – for a specific payload or input stimulus. These mean signatures encapsulate the characteristic response patterns of the device, forming a comprehensive ‘dictionary’ that the decoder utilizes for signal identification. The accuracy of the Signature Matrix directly impacts the decoder’s ability to correctly associate measured responses with their corresponding payloads, and is therefore critical for reliable system performance.

Decoder performance is directly reliant on accurate calibration, as it establishes the ability to differentiate between legitimate signals and background noise. Specifically, employing a heterodyne readout technique demonstrably improves the minimum detectable signal, σ_{min}, by a factor of 3.4x when contrasted with readout methods based solely on amplitude measurements. This enhancement in σ_{min} translates directly to increased system sensitivity and a reduced error rate in signal decoding, highlighting the importance of optimized readout configurations during the calibration process.

Beyond Simple Selection: Competitive Dynamics with Ising Machines

Many optimization challenges extend beyond simple maximization or minimization, requiring a competitive selection process – identifying the single best option from a diverse set of possibilities. Traditional optimization techniques often struggle with these scenarios, particularly when dealing with a large number of candidates or complex evaluation criteria. Consider, for instance, a system tasked with choosing the most pertinent data payload for a specific request; simply ranking options isn’t enough – the system must actively select the single best fit. This necessitates a shift towards methods explicitly designed for competitive selection, where the emphasis is not on optimizing a single variable, but on identifying the optimal choice from a defined pool of alternatives, paving the way for innovative approaches like those leveraging the principles of Ising Machines.

A novel method for competitive selection utilizes a One-Hot Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) Selector, executed on an Ising Machine. This approach frames the selection process as an energy minimization problem, where each potential payload corresponds to a specific configuration of the Ising model’s spins. The Ising Machine, designed to find the lowest energy state, effectively identifies and ‘selects’ the optimal payload. By representing choices as binary variables within the QUBO formulation, the machine determines the most favorable option through its natural tendency towards ground state configurations – a process mirroring competitive dynamics where the strongest option prevails. This allows for efficient and potentially scalable selection from a set of discrete alternatives, offering a departure from traditional linear decision-making models.

The selection process benefits from the inherent properties of Ising Machines, which excel at identifying the lowest energy state within a complex system. This capability is directly applied to competitive selection tasks, where multiple potential payloads are evaluated; the Ising model effectively ‘chooses’ the optimal payload by converging on the solution representing minimal energetic cost. Importantly, this approach demonstrates a high degree of reliability; reproducibility rates of 94-95%-validated in comparable computational studies-suggest consistent and dependable performance when identifying the preferred payload, ensuring the stability of the selected signature and bolstering confidence in the decision-making process.

The pursuit of Attractor-Keyed Memory, as detailed in the paper, embodies a recognition that traditional systems inevitably succumb to the constraints of time and access. The concept of replacing memory access with a singular event – a shift from sequential retrieval to state selection – speaks to an attempt to circumvent the decay inherent in repeated operations.
