As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of longing for the stories that remain unfinished in the Halo universe. Characters like the enigmatic Doctor Catherine Halsey, the enigma behind the Spartan-2 program, or the elusive Fireteam Osiris, whose whereabouts are as mysterious as the Forerunner artifacts themselves, have left me yearning for more.
The Halo universe is filled with a multitude of diverse, multifaceted factions and characters beyond the Master Chief. From the alien Arbiter to the artificial intelligence Cortana, characters of all kinds can be found in Halo, each featuring their own unique traits and story arcs. Many characters in Halo have had their stories completed, such as Sergeant Avery Johnson, but many new and classic characters’ storylines remain incomplete. With Halo Studios seemingly working towards rebooting the Halo series with a rumored Halo: Combat Evolved remake, the video game company should strive to complete some of the universe’s most intriguing characters’ stories before the original timeline is abandoned or finished.
Characters who are non-playable supporting characters in the main Halo series games, whose backstories are yet to be fully explored, include:
- 031 Exuberant Witness
- 2401 Penitent Tangent
- Adjutant Resolution
- Admiral Serin Osman
- Captain Thomas Lasky
- Commander Sarah Palmer
- Commander Laurette Agryna
- Fernando Esparza
- Fireteam Majestic
- Lord Terrence Hood
- Spartan Tomas Horvath
- The A.I. Governor Sloan
- The A.I. Roland
- The Weapon
Halo’s Incomplete Alien Character Storylines
Among the many characters fans have longed to see more of in future Halo games, Thel ‘Vadam, also known as the Arbiter, stands out. After the Covenant War’s conclusion, Arbiter found himself in the midst of a Sangheili civil war between his Swords of Sanghelios and remnants of the Covenant. A temporary peace was established following Jul ‘Mdama’s Covenant defeat at the Battle of Sunaion, but this tranquility didn’t last long as Cortana and her artificial intelligence allies swiftly took over Sanghelios soon after. During this conflict, Arbiter was aided by N’tho ‘Sraom and Usze ‘Taham, his partners in the Halo 3 campaign co-op. In the book Halo: Outcasts, we last saw Arbiter just before the events of Halo Infinite, where he and Spartan Olympia Vale were searching for a means to vanquish the Guardians on Netherop while battling against Banished forces.
In Halo games, fans have eagerly awaited the return of a significant character – the white-armored Shipmaster Rtas ‘Vadum. Loyal to the Arbiter, ‘Vadum played a crucial role in forming the Swords of Sanghelios post-Halo 3. Later, he was assigned to track down the remaining San’Shyuum Prophets and Covenant remnants across the galaxy, using his flagship, the Shadow of Intent, for these missions. These assignments kept ‘Vadum away from the main worlds and out of the conflicts involving the Banished and Created. However, it is anticipated that ‘Vadum will once again take center stage, alongside the Banished leaders Atriox and Escharum, in the upcoming novel Halo: Empty Throne, which takes place in 2559 and 2560, around the same timeframe as Infinite.
Atriox’s Incomplete Story and Goals
In the game “Infinite”, the once banished leader Atriox finds himself with an incomplete tale. After miraculously surviving his battle against Master Chief on the exploding UNSC Infinity, we last see him reviving the Endless within Zeta Halo. The end of the game leaves many questions about Atriox unanswered – like how he managed to survive, why he concealed his survival from other Banished members, what his intentions are towards the Endless, and more. It’s likely that we’ll delve deeper into Atriox’s story in “Halo 7”, as it seems that the Banished still pose a significant threat on Zeta Halo, and Atriox may employ the Endless to further his objectives against his adversaries.
In the Halo: Escalation, Halo: Renegades, Halo: Point of Light, and Halo: Epitaph novels and comics, the backstories of characters such as 343 Guilty Spark, The Didact, and The Warden Eternal were fully explored.
Halo’s Incomplete Human Character Storylines
One character yet to have their tale concluded is Dr. Catherine Halsey, who engineered the Spartan-2 program, Cortana, and The Weapon. After being saved from Mdama by Fireteam Osiris, Halsey assisted in opposing Cortana on Sanghelios and subsequently joined the UNSC Infinity to complete the struggle. It is assumed that Halsey played a role in creating the Mjolnir Gen 3 power armor, which was later utilized by Master Chief and other Spartan-4s in ‘Infinite.’ Her whereabouts at present are unknown, but it’s predicted that she will still be alive in 2589 according to her closing remarks at the end of ‘Halo: Reach.’
In the game “Infinite”, Master Chief appeared without his usual team, Blue Team, sparking curiosity among players about their whereabouts. Prior to this, in “Halo 5: Guardians”, Fred-104, Kelly-087, and Linda-058, who are Master Chief’s childhood friends, were introduced as playable characters beyond their roles in the Halo novels. The last time we saw Blue Team was in “Halo: Bad Blood”, where they were rescued from Sanghelios by the Infinity spaceship. Since then, details about their current status have been scarce. However, there’s a hint of their ongoing mission in an UNSC audio log from “Infinite”, where Captain Lasky informs Halsey that the rest of Blue Team has been reassigned to a secret operation.
The Whereabouts of Fireteam Osiris
In the game Halo 5: Guardians, players were introduced to a fresh group of Spartan-4s called Fireteam Osiris. This team consisted of Agent Jameson Locke, Olympia Vale, Holly Tanaka, and Edward Buck. Their mission was to eliminate Mdama, locate Blue Team, and prevent Cortana, but unfortunately they were unable to stop the AI. Following Guardians, Osiris separated to pursue individual missions; Vale aided Arbiter, Buck reformed Alpha-Nine in Halo: Bad Blood, while Locke undertook Operation: BREAKER TRIP. A UNSC audio log from Infinite suggested that Halsey briefly considered deploying Locke as The Weapon if Chief was unavailable. At present, the whereabouts of Locke and Tanaka within the Halo universe are a mystery.
