Since the 1990s, the Power Rangers have been a consistently popular superhero team on TV. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are arguably the most memorable version. This series was the first American adaptation of the Japanese show Super Sentai, and it established the formula that all future Power Rangers seasons would follow.
The original series has been hugely influential and fans have long hoped for more. Now, Boom! Comics is officially continuing the story in a new comic book. All five of the original Power Rangers will return to face what might be their greatest challenge yet – a new enemy that’s potentially more powerful than any they’ve battled before.
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are the Most Iconic Teams in the Franchise’s History
The Original 1990s Group is Returning in the Form of a Comic Spin-Off
In 1993, Saban Entertainment introduced the American version of the Japanese series Super Sentai, called The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The show became popular right away, attracting a large Western audience. While it used some video footage from the original Japanese show, the stories and characters were mostly unique.
The characters really connected with viewers, which is a major reason the series is still so beloved today. Over time, the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers evolved into the Zeo Rangers, and some characters left the show before the change. While the franchise continued to be successful, many fans still fondly remember the very first team.
As a lifelong fan, it’s clear the filmmakers are really leaning into nostalgia to keep us excited – the new installments are full of nods and appearances from the original team. But it’s a bit strange, because surprisingly, outside of one special, we haven’t seen an official continuation of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers story… until now! Boom! Comics just announced a comic spin-off that finally shows us what happened to those iconic Rangers as adults, and I’m thrilled!
Billy Cranston is Set to Reunite the Original Mighty Morphin Rangers Against a New Threat
The Team Will Consist Of Every Original Member of the Mighty Morphin Team, Possibly Even Tommy Oliver
While much of the story is still under wraps, we know the basic idea: a new villain named Rita Rabiosa has appeared in Angel Grove, prompting Billy Cranston to reunite the original Mighty Morphin Rangers. This series seems to be a direct follow-up to Boom! Studios’ previous Mighty Morphin comics and may include just as many references to those comics as the original TV show did.
Rita Rabiosa seems to be a part of Rita Repulsa, but acts as her own character. According to the official timeline, Rita Repulsa should have already transformed into the Mystic Mother by now. However, Rita Rabiosa’s appearance and name strongly suggest she’s still the classic villain. With her appearance in newer Power Rangers stories, there’s a good chance other villains, like Lord Zedd, might show up too.
It’s notable that Tommy Oliver hasn’t been featured in any promotional images so far. This is probably because he was either busy with another Ranger team or had already retired. The story likely takes place while Tommy is the Black Dino Thunder Ranger, and he might even appear as that version of himself in the comic.
Fans Theorize This Comic Might Bridge The Gap Between the Series and the Special
Since Trini Kwan is Alive, the Comic Cannot Take Place in the Modern Day, Even if the Rangers Are Older
There isn’t an official timeline for the comic series yet, but many fans think they’ve figured out where it fits in the overall story. The key is Trini Kwan – she’s one of the few Rangers who died during a fight. Since she’s still alive in the comic, the events must happen before the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Forever and Always Special.
The comic might include references to Trini’s daughter and Tommy’s son, as they’re important characters in the Power Rangers story. It’s also possible the comic will conclude with the Mighty Morphin Rangers gearing up to fight Robo Rita, right before the incident that leads to current events.
This new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic, featuring the Rangers as adults, is a fantastic blend of familiar fun and a fresh concept. It’s likely to be a hit with fans, regardless of the storyline, and could potentially inspire a live-action series. However, we’ll have to wait until May 2026 to see if it truly takes off.
