History Teacher Teaches History Using Assassin’s Creed Syndicate in Class

It’s getting harder for teachers to keep students engaged in class these days. With so many distractions from technology and smartphones – especially things like TikTok – young people’s attention is constantly pulled away. As a result, teachers are continually searching for new methods to capture and maintain students’ focus.

Unlike most entertainment, video games can hold people’s attention with a single story for over 40 hours – making them a great teaching tool! And that’s exactly what one middle school teacher in Brazil discovered.

History Lessons Through the Eyes of Jacob Frye

The inspiration came from Wesley Bernardo, a history teacher who regularly leads multiple classes each day. He recently brought his personal PlayStation 5 to class while teaching a lesson on the Industrial Revolution.

To illustrate the working conditions in 19th-century factories, he played the video game Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. He documented what he observed, and his teacher then shared it on Instagram.

In the video, Bernardo explains that the game uses coal to power everything. While playing as the character Jacob Frye inside the Hightower Coal facility, he shows how burning coal creates steam that runs the machinery. The video quickly became popular online, and you can watch it below.

There are also many funny comments from gamers playfully asking if the professor is taking on new students. It’s a touching example of how games can be much more than just fun!

I heard about this awesome history teacher, Wesley Bernardo, who really gets his students engaged. He teaches multiple classes every day, and he recently brought his own PlayStation 5 to class! He used it during a lesson on the Industrial Revolution, which I think is a super creative way to connect with the material.

Interestingly, using games in education isn’t new. In Poland, for instance, schools and universities often provide free copies of the game This War of Mine for use in classes like ethics, sociology, and history. It helps students and teachers explore the difficult realities of war.

I really connected with this story, perhaps because of my own experiences with gaming! I learned perseverance through challenging games like Dark Souls, and even realized some of my limitations – like becoming a surgeon – while playing Surgeon Simulator. I actually taught myself English by playing video games, using a dictionary to help me along the way. So, this story feels special to me – it’s proof that games can be both entertaining and educational, and truly a form of art.
