EA has announced that Battlefield Hardline will no longer be playable online on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game’s online servers for these consoles will be switched off on June 22nd. This follows the earlier shutdown of the online features for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions earlier this year.
I remember when Battlefield Hardline came out in 2015. It was a bit of a departure for the series, being a spin-off developed by Visceral Games – sadly, they’re no longer around. Instead of the big military battles we were used to, Hardline went for a “cops and robbers” vibe, and honestly, it felt a lot smaller in scope than the other Battlefield games. It was an interesting idea, but a lot of critics weren’t so sure it worked, feeling like it lost some of what made the main series great by trying to be different.
Battlefield Hardline is Shutting Down on June 22 for PS4 and Xbox One
EA announced on X (formerly Twitter) that online servers for Battlefield Hardline on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will shut down on June 22nd. A month before that, on May 22nd, the game and all its downloadable content will no longer be available for purchase digitally. This means the game’s multiplayer will no longer work on those consoles, following a similar shutdown for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions in November 2024. Players who already own the game will still be able to enjoy the single-player campaign. The PC version of Battlefield Hardline is unaffected and will remain playable.
EA has decided to shut down Battlefield Hardline, continuing a trend of older games in the series being taken offline. In November 2024, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Battlefield 3 and 4 were also discontinued, following similar shutdowns for Battlefield 1943, Bad Company, and Bad Company 2 in December 2023. While EA usually waits until a Battlefield game’s online community has dwindled before shutting down the servers, it’s still disappointing for players who occasionally enjoyed the game.
Don’t expect to see another Hardline game anytime soon. The lead multiplayer designer for Battlefield Hardline recently explained that EA decided against a sequel due to disappointing sales. While a future Battlefield game might revisit the “cops and robbers” style, it’s highly improbable.
Electronic Arts has often discontinued online play for older games, and 2025 saw them shut down 23 titles, making their multiplayer features permanently inaccessible. This is frustrating for players, as there’s usually no way for the community to independently keep these games running. However, fans can be glad that Battlefield Hardline’s PC servers are still active, though the number of players is now small.
