However, the game’s lighthearted nature and emphasis on fun sometimes clash with its tendency to introduce complexities that may challenge players.
Essentially, Planet Coaster 2 stays true to its roots but aims to enhance and expand upon the original’s offerings. Sometimes criticized for being overly simplistic, this new installment serves as a response from the franchise, proving that it can still challenge players even in the basics such as placing a roller coaster correctly – I had to restart the tutorial because I incorrectly positioned a rollercoaster and couldn’t delete it to adjust the entrance steps to the right orientation.
In the spirit of amicable rivalry between two park-building maestros, Planet Coaster 2 offers a lively cast of charming mentors who will guide you as you embark on the journey of setting up rides, constructing shops, ensuring power sources, and recruiting staff to manage and cater to your park visitors.
The depth of management can vary greatly, from extensive to minimal, depending on your preference. It offers a good level of guidance, but remember, it’s a simulation game at its core. As you navigate through multiple layers of menus, there are hidden options galore. Your responsibilities extend beyond just offering services and creating paths for them; you must also ensure rides are safe and comply with regulations. Moreover, you need to establish energy stations for powering the rides and water pumps for the pools.
Recently introduced are water channels, versatile enough to construct in any water body and ranging from straightforward to complex designs. Compared to pre-assembled roller coasters that require minimal installation effort, crafting these water features can be a more intricate task. When it comes to adjusting prices at stores or monitoring the health of specific visitors (each with their own names), it’s relatively straightforward. However, the underlying mechanics of the experience itself remains quite elementary.
Create a workspace for employees, establish a repair facility, and recruit maintenance personnel who will manage your research needs for you. It’s an unusual approach, as I’ve never thought of a theme park entrusting innovation and development to the custodial staff. However, in this case, it seems that’s exactly what occurs. You don’t need to be actively involved; just employ maintenance workers, and over time, your research progress will accumulate. As you meet certain criteria, you can then unlock various items by simply clicking a button.
This goes for rides as well as shops and facilities, or even new decorations. Money is fairly easy to come by as long as you’re meeting your guests’ requirements, and regular challenges add an extra dimension to the objective list. You can make it easier by tweaking the difficulty, too, though you probably won’t need to. To make matters worse, additional elements like steps and gateways are separate models on the ground, making it easy to move only the coaster when you intended to move everything. Often, you may need to select all and delete all, which can accidentally remove trees or innocent trash cans as well.
As a gamer, I’ve found myself scratching my head more than expected while playing Planet Coaster 2. Despite its cheerful vibe, it seems that some aspects of the gameplay aren’t as intuitive or straightforward as they could be. For instance, there are times when building a simple pool is all you need to meet an objective, but other instances call for a flume as well to reach a specific guest rating – one that the guests just don’t seem to respond to without it.
To put it simply, this park builder is absolutely delightful and vibrant, offering an extensive collection of decorations, statues, rides, shops, and coasters for selection. While taking a ride in a moving rollercoaster may no longer be groundbreaking, the experience remains exhilarating. Plus, the ability to view your creation from a guest’s perspective by getting down to ground level is truly charming.
Constructing within the sandbox setting seems more pleasurable for me since there are fewer constraints and less pressure regarding time management. It’s less about tedious tasks and more about creating an entertaining space for others. In essence, Planet Coaster 2 is a delightful and endearing management simulator that rewards your input proportionally. Although it may have minor mechanical issues, it offers a relaxing pastime to engage in, allowing you to express your creativity.
