As a longtime Dragon Age fan who has journeyed through the dark lands of Thedas countless times, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia at the mention of a possible remaster for the original games. I remember the thrill of discovering Dragon Age: Origins back in 2009 and the endless hours spent crafting my own character and exploring the rich world BioWare created.
The latest addition to the Dragon Age series, titled “The Veilguard,” has been released and garnered positive feedback across the board. This new release comes a decade after the last major Dragon Age game, sparking speculation among fans about whether the early Dragon Age titles might receive a remaster.
According to John Epler, Creative Director, while he wishes for it, he’s not optimistic that the first three games will be remastered. During an interview with Rolling Stone at the game’s launch, Epler was asked about this possibility.
Epler mentioned that he estimates only around 20 people at BioWare are still familiar with Eclipse. While it might not be as straightforward as developing a game like Mass Effect, there’s a strong affection for the original titles. Essentially, it’s ‘never say never,’ he said.
Although he often states “never say never”, the technology used in the early Dragon Age games might present some challenges. Specifically, the first two Dragon Age titles from 2009 and 2011 were developed using the custom Eclipse engine. However, Dragon Age: Inquisition, which was released later, switched to the Frostbite Engine. This transition makes it more feasible for a remaster compared to the earlier games due to their different engines.
Rolling Stone announced that the Mass Effect series could be receiving a remaster, given they were originally developed using the Unreal Engine, which makes updating them with contemporary tech more feasible.
In case the event occurs, it’s likely that the initial two games would need to be redeveloped using the Frostbite engine, or another suitable one.
