Riot Games Explains The Inner Workings of Esports Broadcasts for a Modern Audience

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can attest to the evolution of gaming and esports broadcasting, particularly in the League of Legends community. The recent World Championship event in London was a testament to Riot Games‘ commitment to catering to their diverse audience, whether they prefer traditional broadcasts or more irreverent co-streams.

After the latest League of Legends World Championship in London, Riot Games had an interview discussing all aspects related to broadcasting. In this conversation, Sam Kordower Chaimson, Riot’s executive producer for Worlds, detailed their strategies for delivering content that caters to a contemporary and growing audience with high expectations.

‘It’s Worthwhile to Support All Those Fans’

In a recent conversation with SVG Europe, Kordower Chaimson revealed that Riot Games is regularly modifying its business strategy to cater to an audience that’s always evolving. Lately, their broadcast team has begun creating a 9:16 stream – a vertical format – specifically for viewers on platforms like TikTok.

As a passionate enthusiast, I firmly believe that expanding the reach of our shared experiences is crucial, and achieving this diversity in consumption methods is the key to making it happen.

Chaimson Kordower emphasized significant similarities between conventional sports and modern esports, using vivid language to highlight the awakening realization of the flexibility and convenience offered by esports streaming.

It appears that conventional sports and mainstream media are gradually realizing that fans prefer diverse methods of interaction. At Riot, we believe it’s essential to cater to these fans, regardless of their location.

Regardless of whether they’re tuning into our conventional sports commentary in their native language through traditional broadcast methods, following one of our co-streamers, or watching with a broadcaster that offers less formal content in another language, fans are opting to experience our sport in a manner similar to how they consume other media.

According to Kordower Chaimson, Riot is actively working on delivering an authentic fan experience. To achieve this, they are focusing on customizing their content to connect with fans and offering rewards for their engagement.

Riot Games is renowned for having one of the most dependable and battle-tested broadcast systems in the esports industry. In 2022, they expanded their operations with two new remote production studios as part of ‘Project Stryker’, located in Dublin, Ireland, and Seattle. These centers are technologically advanced, comparable to those used by some of the world’s leading television broadcasters.

Chaimson Kordower delved into the deeply emotional moments that could play out in large-scale events such as the League of Legends World Championship.

As a passionate fan, I strive to unite the deeply emotional, ultra-real personal connection with the grandeur of high-caliber sporting events. Instead of strictly adhering to conventional reporting norms, my approach is all about blending these two worlds harmoniously. Naturally, you possess unique strengths that make this collaboration even more captivating.

A splendidly large setting is not only eye-catching and thrilling but also offers a unique opportunity to display our extraordinary community and fans. It’s all about honoring the individuals who engage in the game, it’s about celebrating the camaraderie and mutual experiences we share, and that’s truly something exceptional.
