As a seasoned Pokémon trainer with over two decades of catching and battling these enchanting creatures under my belt, I must say that the adorable Pumpkaboo from Generation 6 has undeniably left an everlasting impression on me. Born and raised during the chilly autumn months, this little jack-o’-lantern Pokémon embodies everything I hold dear about the Halloween spirit – from its charming appearance to its signature move, Trick-or-Treat, which is a real treat indeed!
Not every Pokemon is found near trees, some are quite unusual Grass-type creatures not always ideal for a team. The ones on this list, however, stand out as reliable exceptions, their Solar Beam attacks adding to their brilliance compared to others. These iconic Pokemon with ‘Grass’ in their names and plant-related memes necessitated the creation of this list.
It’s no wonder so many prominent websites love different grass babies for their mascots. So, let’s take a look at the best Grass Pokémon. Just don’t get cut on the razor leaf as you take the tour.
25 Sunkern
Generation 2
Introduced for the first time in Pokemon Gold and Silver, Sunkern was one of the Pokemons introduced to exhibit the new evolution item – the Sun Stone. This tiny seedling can be found on Route 24 and in the National Park. But why is it included on this list? Well, Sunkern holds a unique record in the Pokemon universe – it has the lowest total base stats of any Pokemon across the entire franchise, with just 30 points for each stat. Despite its weakness, it’s still noteworthy enough to be mentioned here.
24 Roserade
Generation 4
The games Pokemon Diamond and Pearl introduced fantastic evolutions for some older Pokemon. Previously unimpressive Pokemon like Nosepass, Piloswine, and others were given incredible transformations. One standout among these new Pokemon is Roserade, the evolution of Roselia. Without a doubt, Roserade is one of the coolest Grass-type Pokemon GameFreak has introduced into the game.
The Pokémon called Bouquet appears to don a mask-like feature, resembling a superhero in disguise. Its design is adorned with various flowers, giving it a vibrant and unique appearance. Even the shiny version of it presents a subtle yet refined transformation. What truly sets it apart is its remarkable strength; Roserade proves to be an exceptional ally for any team during battles. When browsing flowers, it’s challenging not to be captivated by such a distinctive Pokémon as Roserade.
23 Ferrothorn
Generation 5
Ferrothorn is far from the cutest Pokémon. A number of trainers who did competitive battles probably have mixed feelings about it, since it’s such an effective wall that it’s mostly just annoying. However, for the edgiest gamers and the competitive battlers both, this Steel-type is a fantastic Pokémon. It has so many spikes, and enemy Pokémon will run themselves ragged in battle against it.
Among grass-types, few can rival the imposing appearance of Ferrothorn; it’s as if it demands an entire army to be defeated. In comparison, its water-type sibling, Toxapex, wishes it could possess even a fraction of Ferrothorn’s cool factor. Generation V introduced some peculiar designs and certain missteps, but Ferrothorn was undeniably successful in terms of aesthetic appeal and performance.
22 Carnivine
Generation 4
Carnivine is a Venus flytrap friend any trainer would be happy to call their own. It has had appearances in the anime, a strange unique glitch in Pokémon Battle Revolution, and has a focused story in the Pokémon Adventures manga. In Pokémon Go, Carnivine is actually a regional exclusive! Players throughout the world have to either travel to either Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Georgia if they hope to catch one in the wild. Suffice it to say, James made an excellent choice by having Carnivine join the Team Rocket family.
21 The Chikorita Line
Generation 2
When it comes to Pokémon that receive criticism for being weak on Twitter, Chikorita often gets singled out. Its stats may not be impressive, but it faces off against tough competitors like Totodile and Cyndaquil. However, what sets Chikorita apart from other Pokémon is its unique trait of friendship. In the Johto Journeys anime, Chikorita was a key character, being Ash’s first confirmed female Pokémon. Compared to many of Ash’s other Pokémon, Chikorita stands out as a more developed and engaging character.
Beyond that, Chikorita’s evolutions boast fantastic designs too. Bayleaf is undeniably one of the best mid-evolution stages among all starter Pokémon, and Meganium is a stunningly beautiful flower Pokémon. While Chikorita might be considered simple, it’s endearing charm certainly warrants just as much (if not more) recognition as that of Bulbasaur. It’s high time Chikorita earns the respect it truly deserves.
20 Ludicolo
Generation 3
It’s important to note that Ludicolo is primarily included on this list due to its appearance in the Detective Pikachu film. However, in the games, it’s generally a strong Water and Grass-type Pokémon. Its brief role as a barista in the movie really adds to the atmosphere. Furthermore, the Pokémon TCG has created a card featuring Detective Pikachu artwork because of Ludicolo’s part in the film, and there’s also a Megablocks set inspired by it!
When Lotad transforms into Lombre and receives a Water Stone, Ludicolo – often referred to as the celebratory duck-like creature (or a kappa in Japan) – becomes an ideal companion. In terms of TMs, it boasts a diverse collection of move types, making it a formidable competitor.
19 Vileplume
Generation 1
Players who are acquainted with the initial 151 Pokemon from Red & Blue will undoubtedly recall the Grass-type Pokemon, Vileplume, adorned with a hat. Vileplume was a go-to choice for numerous players as they navigated the game for the first time, due to the abundance of Oddish in certain areas. Gloom, one of the peculiar yet cute Pokemon introduced during the early era, was often utilized by players in the latter stages of the game.
With its Toxic-type and ability Hidden Ability Spore, it became a powerful adversary when wielded skillfully, as it penalizes opposing Pokémon that come into contact with it.
18 Deerling and Sawsbuck
Generation 5
There’s such an array of stunning variations for Deerling and Sawsbuck, it’s hard to imagine any trainer not wishing to collect them all. What makes these Pokemon even more unique is that they’re the sole Normal/Grass types in the entire Pokémon universe, a fact that truly sets them apart! These Pokemon don’t just radiate beauty, but also raw power – as demonstrated by the impact of the Sawsbuck card from Cosmic Eclipse on competitive tournaments. In fact, this deck significantly altered the overall metagame for a while. Simply put, these Grass-types are not only visually stunning, but they pack quite a punch too!
17 Shaymin
Generation 4
In the course of a day, this diminutive Mythical Pokémon transforms between two distinct forms: during the day, it assumes a hedgehog-like form called Shaymin, which alters into a deer-like sky form when using the Gracidea flower. The land form of Shaymin primarily interacts with flowers, earning it the title of “Gratitude” Pokémon.
However, when Shaymin transforms into Sky Forme, it is designed to evoke the concept of a guardian angel or fairy in reality. Shaymin first debuted during Pokémon’s 4th generation, serving as an iconic Mythical Pokémon for both Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, and remains an adorable little creature even now.
16 Virizion
Generation 5
Beyond the well-known “Can you hear me now?” puns, Virizion is one of the Swords of Justice, a group modeled after the characters from The Three Musketeers. Specifically, Virizion resembles Aramis, who was known for his vanity and slender build.
Among Cobalion, which seems to be modeled after Athos, Terrakion resembling Porthos, and Virizion forming the trio, Keldeo completes the group as it is inspired by D’Artagnan, the youngest of the Musketeers. Together they stand, united!
15 Exeggutor
Generation 1 & Generation 7
This guy deserves to be pretty high on the list. Exeggutor is literally just a big egg pun and joke that turns into a tree. When people say that Pokémon designs are weird in recent years, show them this derpy guy and explain that those faces aren’t coconuts, they’re Ex-EGG-utors.
Sure he’s designed like a short, squat palm tree, but his Alolan form takes to the skies with a super long neck due to the region. That form isn’t just a grass-type. It’s also a dragon-type to just really confused everyone on all sides. Who wants a tree with faces running at you with Dragon Rage? Let’s just not think about it, okay?
14 The Snivy Line
Generation 5
In various Pokemon games, starting Pokemons can sometimes receive negative perceptions, which may be influenced by their performance as players progress towards the endgame. However, some starting Pokemons prove to be valuable companions throughout the whole journey.
The Snivy line begins with a charming, two-legged reptile-like creature that eventually loses its limbs and metamorphoses into the stunning Serperior. Its unique Contrary ability causes trouble for enemies using stat decreasing moves, as Serperior effortlessly reverses their negative effects into beneficial ones.
13 Decidueye
Generation 7
Among the listed characters, Decidueye underwent one of the most remarkable transformations. Originally appearing as a simple, adorable green owl named Rowlet, Deciduewe can be compared to Robin Hood in the Pokémon world. Out of the Alolan starters, he is highly appreciated by fans. With an air reminiscent of Green Arrow, this Pokémon uses its archery skills to shoot arrows.
The ghost typing is interesting and could lie in the origins of Hawaiian culture where spirits take on the form of pueo owls that look pretty similar to Decidueye. While Incineroar has that Fire/Dark typing from the same generation, Decidueye stands out as well for its grass/ghost typing.
12 Leafeon
Generation 4
Even though Leafeon might not rank highest among Eevee’s evolutions, it certainly earns admiration for being a charming member of the Grass-type Pokemon roster. Like its counterparts, Leafeon requires specific evolution conditions to transform.
Starting from the Generation 4 games, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Leafeon has been known to evolve with a mossy rock. By being close to this unique mossy rock and evolving an Eevee results in Leafeon. However, in the Generation 8 games, Pokémon Sword and Shield, they’ve made the process much easier by removing the need for the mossy rock altogether; now, it can simply evolve using a Leaf Stone!
11 Grookey Line
Generation 8
In a new twist, Pokémon Sword and Shield didn’t introduce an abundance of fresh grass-type Pokémon. Yet, the starter in this game, Grookey, stands out as one of the top-notch grass starters ever created. With its adorable design featuring a miniature branch, Grookey is indeed a superior choice, evoking both cuteness and memorability. When it was initially unveiled, it quickly became popular for memes due to its monkey (or gun-wielding) likeness.
Apart from its quirky nature, Rillaboom stands out as an excellent design, boasting a drumming gimmick, rock star hairstyle, and impressive signature moves. It exudes equal parts silliness and style, making it an ideal companion for any adventure. When it comes to final evolutions, Grookey clearly emerged victorious compared to Scorbunny and especially Sobble. Although some might lament another bipedal starter, Grookey and its evolutions truly deserve the accolades they receive. Furthermore, Rillaboom’s newly introduced Gigantamax form leaves a strong impression on this rhythmic Grass-type Pokémon!
10 Torterra
Generation 4
Among the three starters from the Sinnoh region, it’s typically Turtwig and Torterra that get overshadowed, with many preferring Infernape, the fire monkey, or Empoleon, the ice penguin, for their teams. Yet, for those with a keen eye for adventure, Turtwig and its final form, Torterra, stand out as exceptional grass-type Pokemon that GameFreak has produced.
Examining the Pokedex descriptions, Torterra is known as the Continent Pokemon, a title it holds alongside Groudon, the legendary symbol representing Earth itself. Essentially, it’s like Venusaur, but even more exceptional due to its direct connection to the ancient World Turtle mythology, also recognized as the Cosmic Turtle and the Turtle that Bears the World. This massive, sluggish creature is not hesitant about absorbing attacks to deal damage, although be sure to shield it from Ice-based assaults.
9 Celebi
Generation 2
In the world of Pokémon, this tiny onion sprite is undeniably adorable and unique. To clarify, he’s the sole representative of his kind within Pokémon. Fans were initially introduced to Celebi, a traveler through time, during the anime’s fourth movie. It whisked Ash back in time for an encounter with a younger Professor Oak.
For individuals who enjoy playing Pokémon games, Celebi has a notable connection with the Ilex Forest Shrine. This association was so significant that the games Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver included a unique event scene revolving around the Shrine and Celebi, where players could battle Giovanni. In the broader context, the Japanese name for Celebi, Serebii, is now synonymous with comprehensive Pokémon information and news across the global community.
8 Pumpkaboo
Generation 6
As a dedicated fan, I’ve occasionally found myself pondering about the frequency of inanimate objects transforming into Pokémon. And now, here we are with a perfect example – the charming Pumpkaboo! It’s truly fascinating how GameFreak managed to breathe life into a Halloween decoration and make it part of the Pokémon universe.
This small Pokémon resembling a jack-o-lantern perfectly embodies the essence of Halloween with its unique ability, Trick-or-Treat. Interestingly, this move is particularly effective against other ghostly creatures, making it a delightful surprise. In combat, Trick-or-Treat alters the opponent’s type to Ghost, enabling Pumpkaboo to deliver more potent Ghost attacks. Truly, it’s a formidable and underestimated duo.
7 Calyrex
Generation 8
Calyrex hails from the Crown Tundra and stands out as an exceptionally cool Grass-type Legendary that players haven’t seen in years. What makes it truly special is its ability to pair with Glastier and Spectrier, a rare feat among Pokémon. Furthermore, when Dynamaxed, Calyrex emits a distinctive blue aura, making it the sole Pokemon with this characteristic. As the ruler of Galar, Calyrex possesses a unique talent for telepathically conversing with humans. With its power to perceive past, present, and future events, it could potentially rewrite the very rules of Pokémon lore. This majestic creature is an excellent addition to any team and undeniably one of the most powerful Grass-type Pokémon ever created.
6 Applin, Flapple, And Appletun
Generation 8
Oh, what a delight it would be to possess an Applin as a cherished treasure… Speaking of which, these Pokémon are unique as they are the only ones known to combine Grass and Dragon types, and both boast Gigantamax forms, making them truly exceptional. Interestingly, Applin is rather scarce, perhaps due to the belief that offering one to a beloved symbolizes profound affection, thus reducing their numbers in the wild.
To transform these rare finds into their ultimate version, players should provide them with a unique accessory instead of attempting to consume them, which would undoubtedly cause them harm.
