A complete version of the game Sonic Frontiers has appeared online before Sega officially announced it. Released initially in 2022, Sonic Frontiers is the newest main 3D adventure featuring Sonic the Hedgehog. This game was a departure for the series, introducing “open zones” – large areas players can freely explore, alongside more classic Sonic stages. Sega further developed this open-zone style in 2024 with Shadow Generations, and plans to continue using and improving the concept in future games.
The game Sonic Frontiers, set in the Starfall Islands, brought fresh faces to the Sonic the Hedgehog series and a new Open Zone style of gameplay. Sonic’s journey involves helping the Koco, the inhabitants of Starfall Island, and facing off against Sage, an android created by Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Since its debut, Sage has quickly become a popular character in the Sonic universe, appearing in the 2025 game Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and even in the IDW Sonic comic books. While Sage hasn’t yet been featured in the live-action Sonic movies and shows from Paramount, many fans expect to see her there soon, considering how well-received she’s been.
The Definitive Edition of Sonic Frontiers
A complete version of Sonic Frontiers appears to have been revealed by Korea’s game ratings board. These ratings board leaks are common in the gaming world and often provide accurate early details. However, this leak doesn’t share any specifics about what Sega has added to the original game. Sonic Frontiers already received substantial free downloadable content after its release, letting players control Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. It’s likely this content will be part of the complete edition, but there’s also a chance of new features. Sega could expand the game with additional areas and challenges, giving existing fans a reason to play again.

With over 4.5 million copies sold, Sonic Frontiers is the most successful 3D Sonic game to date, outselling games like Sonic Forces. A definitive edition could boost sales even further. While details are scarce, a leak suggests a new version is in development, and the Nintendo Switch 2 seems like the most likely platform. The original Sonic Frontiers could have been improved on the Switch, so a definitive edition on new hardware would be a great opportunity to enhance the game’s performance and visuals. Ideally, Sega would offer existing Switch owners a way to upgrade, but they didn’t do so with Sonic x Shadow Generations recently, so it’s unlikely.
This year is the 35th anniversary of the first Sonic the Hedgehog game, which came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991. Sega has only revealed a new logo to mark the occasion so far, and hasn’t announced any big celebration plans. Releasing a complete edition of Sonic Frontiers would be a great way to start. There’s been talk of Sonic Frontiers 2 potentially coming out in November 2026, and if that happens, it would be smart to offer the original Sonic Frontiers to new players as well. For now, Sonic fans will have to wait and see if these rumors turn out to be true.
