Adventure games come in many forms – you can find adventure elements in role-playing games, fast-paced action games, and even platformers. And when it comes to fantasy worlds, they aren’t limited to just magic and mythical creatures. The video games below all take familiar genres and try something new, creating truly unique experiences.

I’ve played a ton of fantasy adventure games, from classics like Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver on the PS1 to newer titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I’m going to rank some of my favorites, judging them on how cool their worlds are, how fun the gameplay is, and just how well everything is built together.

10. Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver

From Vampire To Avenger

In the fantasy world of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Raziel is banished by his vampire master, Kain, after becoming more powerful than a typical vampire. As Raziel, players must use his unique ability to steal souls to overcome a variety of enemies, including monsters, humans, and other vampires.

The recent update reminded players just how well-written and voiced this game was for its time – a PlayStation 1 title from 1999. The combination of puzzles, platforming, and action was also really enjoyable, offering a similar experience to classic Zelda games on the PS1.

9. Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time

Another Chance At Life

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time successfully revitalized a classic series that many had overlooked. Its innovative time-rewinding ability offered a unique gameplay element alongside the usual jumping and fighting. While each area clearly showed players the path forward, figuring out how to progress remained a fun challenge.

Even today, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remains a fantastic game thanks to its smooth platforming, exciting wall-running, and engaging combat. It’s disappointing that the planned remake has faced so many delays, because it could have introduced this classic to a whole new audience.

8. It Takes Two

If Only Marriage Counseling Were This Fun

Okay, so I just finished It Takes Two, and wow, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever played. You have to play with a friend – it’s built for co-op. The story is about a couple heading for divorce who get turned into dolls, and they have to work together to fix things, guided by this crazy magic book. What’s really cool is that every new level throws a totally different gameplay mechanic at you. Seriously, one minute you’re riding frogs, the next you’re inside a video game within the game! It’s experimental, but it all feels really polished and well-designed.

It Takes Two aims to not only create engaging moments where players playfully argue like their in-game characters, but also to strengthen the connection between the people playing together.

7. Donkey Kong Bananza

Out Of The Jungle And Into The Dirt

If you’re considering a Switch 2, Donkey Kong Bananza might be the game that convinces you. It’s the most enjoyable Donkey Kong game ever made! You play as DK and can break through diverse and exciting levels, from charming coastal towns to dangerous, lava-filled mountains.

It’s incredibly satisfying to break things apart in this game, because destruction leads to rewards – you’ll uncover materials to power up DK and find useful resources. The music is fantastic, the story takes some unexpected and enjoyable turns, particularly the ending, and the connection between DK and Pauline is genuinely heartwarming.

6. Super Mario Odyssey

A Globe-Trotting Adventure

Many 3D Mario games take place in fantastical worlds, but Super Mario Odyssey stands out for its incredibly diverse adventure. It truly captures the spirit of exploration, letting players journey through deserts, vibrant food-themed kingdoms, bustling cities, and a wealth of other unique locations.

The planets in this game are expansive and full of exciting things to discover. But the real star is Cappy, Mario’s companion, who gives him the incredible ability to take control of almost anything – enemies, objects, even people! Now, with the added power of the Switch 2, this game is even more amazing and is a must-play for anyone who didn’t experience it before.

5. God Of War (2018)

Beards, Boys, And Brutality

I absolutely loved the original God of War games, they were so intense! But the 2018 reboot really blew me away. It still has that epic adventure feel, but it dives way deeper into fantasy, taking you to these incredible, unexplored worlds. You’re traveling everywhere – from freezing, snowy mountains to dark, fiery volcanoes and even these beautiful, magical forests. It’s just a stunning game to explore.

The game features incredibly grand environments and extremely intense combat, with everything from axe blows that sever heads to Kratos ripping enemies apart with his bare hands. Despite all the violence, it’s also a surprisingly emotional story about a father struggling to raise his son after the loss of his wife.

4. Okami

A Painting Comes To Life

Okami feels remarkably similar to the classic Zelda games, and many consider it an even more engaging action-adventure experience. The game takes place in a beautiful, mythical version of ancient Japan, where you play as Amaterasu, a sun goddess transformed into a wolf.

Players journey through a vast world, battling monsters to bring life back to the land. They’ll also explore challenging dungeons to unlock new abilities and solve intriguing puzzles. This game delivers everything you’d expect from a classic Zelda adventure – engaging combat, useful items, memorable characters, and a heartfelt story – all wrapped in a stunning, painterly visual style.

3. Shadow Of The Colossus (2018)

Big World, Bigger Bosses

Shadow of the Colossus stands out as a truly unique game, whether you play the original PS2 version or the updated PS4 remake, which improved the controls. The game is largely a series of boss battles, where you journey through a beautiful but desolate world to find and defeat massive creatures called Colossi.

Every battle feels unique, challenging players to find new ways to reach and overcome each massive creature. While other games have tried similar ideas, none have quite matched the breathtaking feeling of size and scope found in Shadow of the Colossus.

2. Hollow Knight: Silksong

Bug Fables

I’m seriously blown away by how much detail and story is packed into Hollow Knight: Silksong! It’s incredible to me that a 2D indie game can build a world that feels richer and more immersive than some of those huge, big-budget titles. You play as this little bug trapped in a crumbling kingdom overrun with infected creatures and strange, zealous followers. The whole game is about figuring out what happened to you, uncovering your history, and ultimately finding a way to escape this weird, new place you’ve been taken to. It’s a really compelling setup!

This game is incredibly tough, often feeling like a ‘Souls-like’ experience, but overcoming its challenges – like tricky platforming sections or long boss battles – is incredibly satisfying. It features stunning hand-drawn graphics, exciting abilities inspired by Metroidvania games, memorable characters, and plenty more. It really has everything a player could ask for.

1. The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

A Decade Of Breathlessness

It wouldn’t be a proper list without a Zelda game, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild remains incredibly popular even years after its release. It truly defines what a great fantasy adventure should be.

This Hyrule is massive and stunning, but also a little haunting with its monsters and crumbling remains. Despite the darkness, there’s still a lot of fun to be found – from quirky characters and hidden collectibles to clever puzzles that use the game’s physics. It’s a truly immersive world that’s easy to get lost in.
