Three years later, Riot Games’ “League of Legends” series “Arcane” has returned, maintaining its momentum without missing a step. The first season established an impressive benchmark for video game adaptations and animated shows, yet somehow “Arcane” Season 2 not only maintains that level but elevates it even higher.

In the opening episode of Arcane Season 2, titled “Heavy is the Crown,” Etienne Mattera and Barth Maunoury take on directing duties, with Amanda Overton penning the script. Overton, who previously wrote the fifth episode of Arcane’s first season and has worked on shows like Severance and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, is responsible for this episode. This premiere was unveiled as part of Act 1 in Arcane Season 2, and it beautifully established the narrative for the second and concluding season of Arcane.

From the finale of Arcane Season 1, a key question remained unanswered: who among the council members would survive Jinx’s missile attack? The beginning of Season 2 provides the answer immediately. Jayce and Mel are confirmed to be alive and safe, but others close to them have not been as fortunate. Salo and Shoola were injured in the blast, along with Viktor, whom Jayce rushes to the lab to attempt healing using the mutated Hexcore. Unfortunately, Hoskel and Bolbok did not survive the explosion, but the most heartbreaking loss may be that of Cassandra Kiramman.

To the heartfelt melody of Freya Ridings’ “I Can’t Hear it Now”, a funeral scene unfolds in a raw, emotive manner, with a washed-out greyscale backdrop and strategic splashes of color to emphasize characters such as Caitlyn who is deeply mourning. Despite already establishing its distinctive animation style through the series Arcane, Fortiche continues to push boundaries and explore new visual techniques. The portrayal of Cassandra’s funeral serves as a testament to the exceptional quality of storytelling in Arcane.

How Does Piltover React?

Every time I dive into Arcane, I’m always impressed by its succinct storytelling. The narrative swiftly progresses as Piltover grapples with responding to Jinx’s assault. Amidst the heated debates among council members, there’s a suggestion from Ambessa Medarda, Mel’s mom, about invading Zaun. Despite her presence, it seems she’s still influencing things behind the scenes. Eventually, Mel agrees, but firmly refuses to use Hextech weapons – knowing full well that Jayce would never approve of such a move.

“Hextech may keep us alive, Jayce, but it’s not what will save us.”

In her sorrow, all that Caitlyn seems able to focus on is seeking retribution against Jinx. Vi wishes to aid her friend. She’s accepted that Jinx isn’t her sister anymore, but when Caitlyn presents an opportunity for vengeance through the enforcers, she can’t ignore the fact they were responsible for the murder of her parents. However, as an enforcer named Maddie Nolen approaches Vi on the street and acknowledges her renown within their ranks, Vi begins to reconsider. The show “Arcane” is skillful in establishing societal divisions through its characters, and in the Season 2 premiere, it starts to reverse these preconceived notions. It’s evident that Vi, who has symbolized the undercity up until now, is gradually losing those boundaries as she spends more time above ground and strengthens her bond with Caitlyn.

Zaun Strikes Again

Zaun’s Second Attack is the Turning Point For Many Characters

A pivotal moment unfolds during a tribute for lost council members in Piltover. As the city strives to unite its citizens, the Zaunites instead sow discord. Two undercover agents, one being the mother of the boy Jayce fatally wounded in Season 1, instigate chaos at this memorial event. The ensuing conflict transforms the solemn ceremony into a battleground. Suddenly, an airship filled with Shimmer-enhanced warriors, or Turbo Chemtanks, appears, providing Arcane the opportunity to display its exceptional action sequences.

In a turn of events, Jayce is chased by a vindictive mother armed with a menacing chainsaw. The situation seems dire for Caitlyn, Vi, and their team, as they are significantly outnumbered and under-equipped against the Chemtanks. However, just when it seemed all was lost, Vi thought quickly and retrieved Jayce’s Hextech hammer. In a swift strike, the hammer annihilated the enemy forces on the spot.

The Next Chapter of Hextech

The entire situation has left the high society of Piltover utterly disrupted. They’re astonished to find that the people from Zaun had managed to come this far, leading them to ponder if perhaps there’s an undercover agent among them.

The main idea behind “Heavy is the Crown” is to challenge the characters to expand their boundaries. At first, Caitlyn hesitated to embrace her role as leader of House Kiramman, but by the end of the episode, she’s uncovered the mysteries of the Kiramman key and presents herself before the council with renewed dignity in her position and a fresh strategy: she intends to infiltrate Zaun with a special task force, dismantle Shimmer operations, and locate Jinx. Vi decides to support her mission, setting aside her bias against enforcers to don the badge. Jayce comes to terms with the necessity of Hextech weapons for Piltover’s survival and takes on the responsibility of crafting new tools for Caitlyn’s squad. Now, they are preparing to even the odds.

In the premiere of Season 2, there aren’t many flaws to criticize in Arcane. However, some characters like Maddie, Sheb, and Loris, who are new enforcers, may not get as much attention due to the fast-paced nature of Arcane, but aside from that, this is a delightful continuation of what the series excels at and sets up a final season brimming with possibilities.

Arcane Season 2 Episodes 1-3 are now streaming on Netflix.
