As a long-time Trekkie, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation at the prospect of Star Trek: Legacy coming to life. The potential for this series is immense, with so many beloved characters from the past and present ready to embark on new adventures.

There’s been a lot of excitement among fans ever since Star Trek: Picard concluded in 2023, as they’ve been eagerly requesting more content with their beloved characters from the Star Trek universe. Not long after the series wrapped up, its showrunner Terry Matalas suggested developing a Star Trek spinoff centered around Captain Seven of Nine, played by Jeri Ryan, and her crew.

The prospective series, “Star Trek: Legacy”, is set to continue the narrative from where “Picard” season 3 concludes, bringing together Captain Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) and Q (John de Lancie). Despite “Picard” ending with season 3, its finale cleverly laid the groundwork for an intriguing spinoff, suggesting that such a continuation might have been anticipated. With Seven of Nine now in command and Jack encountering Q, the opportunities for exciting storylines are numerous.

Over the last year, apart from Ryan, Speleers, and de Lancie, various renowned actors from the original Star Trek series such as Michelle Hurd (Raffi), LeVar Burton (Geordi LaForge), and Jonathan Frakes (William Riker) have voiced enthusiasm for Star Trek: Legacy. The showrunners of Trekverse, Terry Matalas and Alex Kurtzman, have also made it clear that they ardently desire Legacy to materialize, but they acknowledge their lack of control with the studio to make this dream a tangible reality.

However, given that Trekkies have a history of influencing production companies to create new series, there’s a chance that “Legacy” might materialize. If this occurs, here are some characters that the show absolutely needs to reintroduce.

Naomi Wildman

If 'Star Trek: Legacy' Happens, These Characters Should Come Back

In the series “Star Trek: Voyager,” the character Seven of Nine formed an unconventional bond with the lone child on board, named Naomi Wildman. This half-human, half-Ktarian girl was born while the ship was marooned in the Delta Quadrant. A special connection emerged between them during a “Star Trek” episode where Seven adopted a juvenile personality from a Borg-assimilated individual. Initially, their relationship leaned towards teacher and student, but as time passed, Naomi and Seven grew incredibly close and eventually viewed each other as family members.

In the context of Picard’s third season, if we consider that Naomi is approximately 29 or 30 years old, it presents an ideal moment to reconnect with her character, who serves as Seven’s younger sister figure. In the series Legacy, she could be a new addition to Seven’s crew, perhaps holding the rank of Ensign or Lieutenant. Alternatively, their paths might cross in another mission scenario.

At some stage, the team responsible for running Picard had thought about incorporating the character of Naomi into the series as a Fenris Ranger, but eventually decided against it. However, this concept could potentially be reintroduced in the spin-off series titled Legacy.

B’Elanna Torres

Even though Lieutenant B’Elanna Torres was mentioned in Star Trek: Prodigy, she hasn’t been seen in the Star Trek universe since Voyager concluded. Interestingly, her husband, Tom Paris, appeared in Lower Decks, but failed to mention his wife. As a result, fans have not received any recent updates about this fascinating human/Klingon character.

In simple terms, Roxann Dawson, known for her role as Torres on Voyager, found a passion for directing during her time on the show and has mostly moved away from acting. She is now a skilled director. If the opportunity presented itself, she could make an excellent addition to the Star Trek Legacy team.

Torres and Seven had their fair share of disagreements on Voyager, but they held mutual respect and frequently relied on each other’s technical skills. The intricate dynamic between the two was a highlight of later Voyager episodes. Witnessing their relationship rekindle in their advanced years, with their vastly expanded knowledge and experience, would be captivating. Both characters are powerful women who don’t always find harmony with others, making their eventual reunion intriguing.

Benjamin Sisko

It’s a long shot, but fans can dream, right? Avery Brooks, who portrayed Commander (later Captain) Benjamin Sisko in Deep Space Nine, has mostly stepped away from acting in the early 2000s and rarely appears publicly. Yet, there’s a possibility that Brooks might be open to reprising his role. Cirroc Lofton, who played Sisko’s son Jake, built a strong bond with Brooks during their time on DS9, and they’ve been close friends for many years. Lofton believes Brooks could return if the opportunity arises. And let’s face it, fans would love to see him again.

Introducing Captain Sisko into a narrative for Legacy could pose some difficulties, given his previous encounter with the Bajoran Prophets, where he essentially became a celestial figure akin to Jesus in space. Yet, he did assure both Kasidy, expecting their child, and Jake that he would return often to be an active part of their family life.

In the final season of “Picard”, The Dominion significantly influenced events. Therefore, it’s possible that a journey through the wormhole might occur in “Legacy”. This could offer fans a chance to discover if Sisko honored his pledge to Kasidy and Jake, and potentially introduce some humorous wormhole-related antics.

Thomas Riker

As a dedicated Trek fan, it’s been quite some time since we last saw William Riker’s transporter twin, Thomas Riker, who was incarcerated for his actions with the Maquis and stealing the Defiant. In the latest series Lower Decks, Thomas Riker was among the ex-Starfleet officers to be apprehended and returned to Earth, when Nick Lacarno piloted the Nova One, causing havoc across the quadrant. This suggests that Thomas Riker is no longer in the Lazon II labor camp as of 2381. The show Lower Decks didn’t elaborate on whether he was released or managed to escape his imprisonment.

In the year 2401, which marks the beginning of the storyline in “Legacy”, Thomas Riker could be anywhere across the universe. The crew of Captain Seven might cross paths with him during another undercover operation, similar to his exploits as part of the Maquis. Alternatively, “Legacy” may pay tribute to the series premiere of “Voyager”. If for some reason, Thomas Riker is still in prison while the events of “Legacy” unfold, Captain Seven could enlist him for a mission, reminiscent of how Captain Kathryn Janeway recruited Tom Paris from prison for Voyager’s inaugural mission.

Sela

One significant instance demonstrating early challenges Star Trek faced in developing its female characters is Denise Crosby’s departure from The Next Generation’s first season. Notably, Crosby decided to leave when she requested further character development for Tasha Yar but was denied by the showrunners. However, fortunately, Crosby returned to the series on several occasions – once as a different iteration of Yar, and four times as Sela, a half-Romulan, half-human character who is the daughter of an alternate version of Tasha Yar. Interestingly, it was Crosby herself who conceived the idea for Sela and presented it to the showrunners, who appreciated it and developed several storylines around her for The Next Generation.

In the TV series Picard, it seems unusual that the creators didn’t reintroduce the Romulan character Sela, considering her ties. The upcoming season, Legacy, might present a chance for this, and according to Popverse, it seems they have indeed discussed the possibility. At Tampa Bay Comic Convention, actor Crobsy revealed that he has already talked about a storyline involving Sela with showrunner Matalas, who expressed interest in the idea. Many fans would be thrilled if this plan materializes.

Although Star Trek: Legacy hasn’t received the go-ahead yet, there’s strong support for the project from fans, actors, and showrunners. Fingers crossed that it comes to fruition eventually, but it might not be approved until after Strange New Worlds finishes its run and Starfleet Academy is fully established.
