As a seasoned gamer who has traversed the cosmos and battled gods alongside my beloved Bronze Saints, the latest update on Saint Seiya leaves me both elated and eager! The prospect of a new arc titled “Saint Seiya THEN: Haikyo no Hana” brings back memories of our epic journey through Sanctuary, Poseidon, and Hades.

This week’s latest issue of Akita Shoten’s Weekly Shonen Jump has officially confirmed that the popular Greek-mythology series, Saint Seiya (or Knights of the Zodiac), will be getting a sequel manga. The initial announcement was made on creator Masami Kurumada’s blog back in October, but since then, only rough sketches have been revealed.

The manga series titled “Saint Seiya” was published in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump from 1985 to 1990, encompassing three story arcs: Sanctuary, Poseidon, and Hades. In 2006, Masami Kurumada initiated a new installment called “Saint Seiya: Next Dimension,” initially conceived as a tale revolving around an earlier generation that would be assisted by Shiori Teshirogi’s work, The Lost Canvas. However, the second volume of Next Dimension deviated from The Lost Canvas and combined both time periods, ultimately serving as the official sequel to the original series. The main narrative centers around warriors known as Saints, who protect the goddess Athena, with a primary focus on five Bronze Saints: Pegasus, Dragon, Cygnus, Andromeda, and Phoenix.

Based on the magazine’s announcement, a fresh 8-page manga titled “Saint Seiya THEN: Haikyo no Hana” or “Saint Seiya THEN: Flowers of Ruins” is set to be released in the upcoming issue, scheduled for November 14, 2024. In the preliminary sketches shared on the author’s blog last month, there are predominantly scenes featuring Saori Kido (Athena) and a series of panels showcasing the original Gold Saints. Take a look below:

In July, the series known as “Next Dimension” concluded its run. This week saw the release of the 16th and final volume. In this sequel, Athena travels back in time to destroy Hades’ sword, with the aim of healing Pegasus Seiya from a grave injury inflicted by that very weapon in the present. However, her time travel puts the entire Earth at risk of collapsing. Despite this danger, Athena manages to heal Seiya and return safely. As a consequence for disrupting the cosmic order, Athena decides to sacrifice her memories and divine status. The four primary Bronze Saints, along with Seiya, also lose their memories in a somewhat melancholic conclusion. Unfortunately, “Next Dimension” is not currently translated into English, but fragments of its story can be found within the mobile game “Saint Seiya: Legends of Justice”.

There’s some debate among fans as to whether the fresh manga is merely an additional tale set after the original or the commencement of a brand-new arc, tentatively titled “Saint Seiya THEN.” For quite some time now, readers have been eagerly anticipating the introduction of the Zeus Arc/Heaven Arc, given the universal appeal of Zeus in mythology-based content. Hints from creator Kurumada suggest that this long-awaited saga could be on its way. Fans are currently theorizing that Athena will regain her memories and a new storyline will ensue due to any ensuing conflicts, marking the beginning of something entirely new.

The manga titled “Saint Seiya/Knights of the Zodiac” is distributed in the United States by VIZ Media. The initial series gave rise to an anime adaptation dating back to the 1980s, which can now be streamed on Crunchyroll. A CGI revamp was produced from 2019 to 2023, consisting of three seasons; the first season is accessible on Netflix, while the remaining two are viewable on Crunchyroll. Last year, a live-action film made its debut, featuring Sean Bean as part of the cast.
