Key Takeaways
- Many characters in My Hero Academia have made important contributions without engaging in battle.
- Eri’s tragic past led to her becoming a hopeful figure who assisted heroes like Izuku Midoriya.
- Principal Nezu, Fuyumi Todoroki, and Tsukaichi are key characters who contributed to the plot in unique ways.
As a writer, I find it truly captivating to delve into the rich tapestry of characters that populate the world of My Hero Academia. Each character, from the powerful Pro-Heroes to the ordinary citizens, has their own unique story to tell, and Ordinary Woman is no exception. Her life experience, marked by discrimination and prejudice, is a stark reminder of the societal issues that still persist in our world today.
One captivating element of Kohei Horikoshi’s “My Hero Academia” series lies in the fact that nearly everyone in this world is predetermined to acquire superpowers, or Quirks, not just the Pro Heroes and Villains who are perpetually engaged in conflict.
Many significant figures from various backgrounds, such as everyday citizens, ingenious creators of supportive gear, and law enforcement personnel, have significantly impacted the storyline of My Hero Academia, despite not participating in combat. These characters are among the most remarkable in the series.
8 Inko Midoriya
A Good Mom Trying Her Best In A Harsh World
- First Appearance: Chapter 1 (Manga), Episode 1 (Anime)
The journey of every admirable hero starts somewhere. For our protagonist, Izuku Midoriya, it all traced back to his mother, Inko Midoriya. Upon learning that Izuku lacked a ‘quirk’, she had to break the news to him that he couldn’t become a hero. Although her prediction was later disproved, one can hardly fault her for her belief. She was a casualty of a skewed society that led people to assume quirkless individuals couldn’t be heroes.
Later on, when Izuku acquired the One For All ability from All Might, Inko proved to be an incredibly supportive mother. She would go out of her way to catch him on TV whenever possible and even had the courage to confront All Might personally to ensure he’d always look after her son properly. Without the selfless efforts of his extraordinary mom, Izuku wouldn’t have become the exceptional hero he is today.
7 Nezu
The Honorable Principal Of U.A. High School
- First Appearance: Chapter 3 (Manga), Episode 4 (Anime)
Nezu stands out in My Hero Academia, as he’s the only known instance of an animal with a quirk that allows him to live like a human. Thankfully, he employs his intelligence for beneficial purposes. Remarkably, he ascended to the position of principal at U.A. High School, which is renowned as Japan’s most prestigious hero academy.
Principal Nezu doesn’t engage in battles against villains, but such action isn’t necessary given his significant role. He is responsible for nurturing and educating future leaders who will one day emerge as Japan’s greatest heroes – a task of immense proportion. Moreover, he demonstrated remarkable courage and compassion when he transformed U.A. High School into a sanctuary for defenseless civilians following the Paranormal Liberation War.
6 Naomasa Tsukauchi
All Might’s Reliable Detective Friend
- First Appearance: Chapter 21 (Manga), Episode 13 (Anime)
In Japan’s society, even with the presence of Pro Heroes, the police force remains vital. A crucial character in this series, Naomasa Tsukauchi, plays a significant role in the plot. He is often overlooked and undervalued among the characters of My Hero Academia, which is unfortunate because his efforts have been instrumental in combating All For One.
Tsukauchi isn’t your typical detective; he’s also one of All Might’s most trusted friends and associates, as depicted in the spin-off, “My Hero Academia: Vigilantes.” Initially, his appearance was quite simple, but it’s clear that his battles against All For One have left their mark. Despite this, the heroes wouldn’t have been successful in defeating the Symbol of Evil without Tsukauchi’s shrewd leadership and organizational skills.
5 Mei Hatsume
A Brilliant Inventor Of Groundbreaking Support Items For Heroes
- First Appearance: Chapter 25 (Manga), Episode 15 (Anime)
Throughout the series, it is made clear how important support items can be for the heroes, since they can help control or even enhance their superhuman abilities. While there are many skilled engineers in My Hero Academia, the most memorable is Mei Hatsume, from the Department of Support in Class 1-H.
Mei might seem quite devoted to her creations, often referring to them as “babies.” However, it’s clear she harbors a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for innovation and crafting useful and potent aid devices. Her creations, along with her own self, proved incredibly beneficial to Deku and other budding heroes. Furthermore, her boisterous, assertive demeanor adds a comedic touch that has endeared her to fans, making her a beloved character.
4 Fuyumi Todoroki
Another Unfortunate Victim Of Endeavor’s Obsession
- First Appearance: Chapter 44 (Manga), Episode 25 (Anime)
The profound discord within the Todoroki household has significantly influenced its members with superpowers, such as Endeavor, Shoto, and Dabi. However, it’s crucial to consider the impact on those who aren’t classified as heroes or villains. A poignant illustration of this is Fuyumi Todoroki, Shoto’s sister, who unfortunatley bears the brunt of Endeavor’s actions on the non-superpowered members of the family.
Instead of continually avoiding their father like his brother Natsuo, Fuyumi tirelessly strived to bring harmony among all family members, even when it seemed almost impossible. This gives her an emotionally poignant and tragic persona, as she yearned for the familial bond she was denied. Yet, amidst her unfortunate circumstances, Fuyumi remains a compassionate individual, offering aid to her loved ones whenever she could.
3 Eri
A Hopeful Girl With A Helpful Quirk
- First Appearance: Chapter 128 (Manga), Episode 66 (Anime)
There’s no argument that Eri stands among the saddest characters in “My Hero Academia”. Born with an immensely powerful Rewind ability, she was exploited by Kai Chisaki of the Shie Hassaikai for much of her existence. However, it wasn’t until Izuku Midoriya, Mirio Togata, and other Pro Heroes intervened that she was finally rescued from a life of servitude.
In contrast to her challenging childhood, Eri transformed into the bright and carefree child she could have been all along, largely thanks to the supportive community at U.A. High School. Although she was quite young and didn’t often engage in fights herself, Eri lent a helping hand on two separate occasions to Izuku Midoriya using her quirk. This assistance proved crucial for Izuku’s victories against Overhaul and All For One.
2 Rody Soul
A Charismatic Boy With A Unique Quirk
- First Appearance: My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission (Anime), Chapter 384 (Manga)
Despite being introduced in the third movie, “World Heroes’ Mission”, Rody Soul swiftly gained immense popularity within the entire My Hero Academia series, even making it to the ninth spot in the manga’s seventh Popularity Poll. This surge in popularity can largely be attributed to his captivating personality. Rody is a laid-back, charismatic, and courageous young fellow who holds his younger siblings dear, and he shares an excellent dynamic with Deku.
Although he may appear as a character with a combat-oriented design and demeanor, it’s important to note that he isn’t typically aggressive. However, this individual possesses exceptional acrobatic abilities and harbors ambitions of being an aviator, which sets him apart from other characters in the series. His unique trait, the ability to summon a small bird named Pino that mirrors his emotions, provides both humor and cuteness, significantly enhancing Rody’s charm.
1 Ordinary Woman
An Example Of The Discrimination Suffered By Heteromorphs
- First Appearance: Chapter 310 (Manga), Episode 133 (Anime)
Intriguingly, Kohei Horikoshi introduced a significant plot twist later in the series, focusing on unfair treatment towards individuals with Mutant-Type abilities (often referred to as Heteromorphs). He underscored this prejudice powerfully by creating a character named Ordinary Woman, whose name itself highlights the harsh realities these people face.
A Common Woman possesses a unique style that sets her apart, yet it’s her compelling narrative that endears her to us. In one of the most heartwarming and awe-inspiring moments in the series, Deku rescued her from a group of civilians armed with weapons who incorrectly assumed she was a villain. Later on, she returned the favor by supporting Deku during a difficult emotional period when he returned to U.A. High School, demonstrating that those he assisted were indeed touched and inspired by his actions.
